  • Image Search is one of the most exciting and fast growing research areas in the filed of multimedia technology. This paper conducts an empirical evaluation of color descriptor that uses the information of color distribution in color images, which is the most basic element for image search. With the experimental results, we observe that in the top 10% of precision, HSV, Daubechies 9/7 and 2 level decomposition have little better than others. Also histogram quadratic metrics outperform the Minkowski form distance metrics in similarity measurements, but spend more than 20 in computational times.

  • Hyperspectral images are often contaminated with stripe noise, which severely degrades the imaging quality and the precision of the subsequent processing. In this paper, a variational model is proposed by employing spectral-spatial adaptive unidirectional variation and a sparse representation. Unlike traditional methods, we exploit the spectral correction and remove stripes in different bands and different regions adaptively, instead of selecting parameters band by band. The regularization strength adapts to the spectrally varying stripe intensities and the spatially varying texture information. Spectral correlation is exploited via dictionary learning in the sparse representation framework to prevent spectral distortion. Moreover, the minimization problem, which contains two unsmooth and inseparable $l_1$-norm terms, is optimized by the split Bregman approach. Experimental results, on datasets from several imaging systems, demonstrate that the proposed method can remove stripe noise effectively and adaptively, as well as preserve original detail information.

  • The purpose of infrared and visible image fusion is to integrate images of different modes with different details into a result image with rich information, which is convenient for high-level computer vision task. Considering many deep networks only work in a single scale, this paper proposes a novel image fusion based on three-scale dense network to preserve the content and key target features from the input images in the fused image. It comprises an encoder, a three-scale block, a fused strategy and a decoder, which can capture incredibly rich background details and prominent target details. The encoder is used to extract three-scale dense features from the source images for the initial image fusion. Then, a fusion strategy called l1-norm to fuse features of different scales. Finally, the fused image is reconstructed by decoding network. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art fusion performance in subjective observation.

  • The job of long distance driving is likely to be fatiguing and requires long period alertness and attention, which make considerable demands of the driver. Driving fatigue contributes to driver related with accidents and fatalities. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the number of hours of driving and driving fatigue using heart rate variability(HRV) signal. With a more traditional measure of overall variability (standard deviation, mean, spectral values of heart rate). Nonlinear characteristics of HRV signal were analyzed using Approximate Entropy (ApEn) and Poincare plot. Five subjects drive the four passenger vehicle twice. All experiment number was 40. The test route was about 300Km continuous long highway circuit and driving time was about 3 hours. During the driving, measures of electrocardiogram(ECG) were performed at intervals of 30min. HRV signal, derived from the ECG, was analyzed using time, frequency domain parameters and nonlinear characteristic. The significance of differences on the response to driving fatigue was determined by Student's t-test. Differences were considered significant when a p value < 0.05 was observed. In the results, mean heart rate(HRmean) decreased consistently with driving time, standard deviation of RR intervals(SDRR), standard deviation of the successive difference of the RR intervals(SDSD) increased until 90min. Hereafter, they were almost unchanging until the end of the test. Normalized low frequency component $(LF_{norm})$, ratio of low to high frequency component (LF/HF) increased. We used the Approximate Entropy(ApEn), Poincare plot method to describe the nonlinear characteristics of HRV signal. Nonlinear characteristics of HRV signals decreased with driving time. Statistical significant is appeared after 60 min in all parameters.

  • Analyzed was the circulation phenomena in the open channel with sudden expansion, by applying the Galerkin's finite element method to the depth-averaged 2-dimensional continuity and momentum equations. Wave tests were done in the simplified channel in order to review the validity of this newly developed model and the computed results were within 0.5% of $L_2$-norm error, and application of this model to the simulation of simplified dam-break gave very close results compared with the analytical solution, thus, it can be concluded that this model is valid and efficient. The main flow in the expanded channel was defined as a new initial condition with given velocity and the flow in the expanded portion was at rest in simulating the circulation, and besides the Neumann's condition the slip boundary condition for lateral wall was found to be proper condition than the no-slip condition. It can be concluded, from the numerical tests in the sudden expension, that the circulating phenomena depend mainly on the convective inertia and the effect of turbulence due to bottom shear and lateral shear is insignificant.

  • Recently, the MPEG-7 standard a multimedia content description standard is wide]y used for content based image/video retrieval systems. However, since the descriptors standardized in MPEG-7 are usually multidimensional and the problem called 'Curse of dimensionality', previously proposed indexing methods(for example, multidimensional indexing methods, dimensionality reduction methods, filtering methods, and so on) could not be used to effectively index the multimedia database represented in MPEG-7. This paper proposes an efficient multimedia data indexing mechanism reflecting the characteristics of MPEG-7 visual descriptors. In the proposed indexing mechanism, the descriptor is transformed into a histogram of some attributes. By representing the value of each bin as a binary number, the histogram itself that is a visual descriptor for the object in multimedia database could be represented as a bit string. Bit strings for all objects in multimedia database are collected to form an index file, bitmap index, in the proposed indexing mechanism. By XORing them with the descriptors for query object, the candidate solutions for similarity search could be computed easily and they are checked again with query object to precisely compute the similarity with exact metric such as Ll-norm. These indexing and searching mechanisms are efficient because the filtering process is performed by simple bit-operation and it reduces the search space dramatically. Upon experimental results with more than 100,000 real images, the proposed indexing and searching mechanisms are about IS times faster than the sequential searching with more than 90% accuracy.

  • Objectives: Cold Hypersensitivity of Hands and Feet (CHHF) has been diagnosed objectively by Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) and has been known to be associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS), which can be assessed by Heart Rate Variability (HRV). This study evaluated the correlation between severity of CHHF and HRV variables. Methods: We studied 155 non-menopausal women with CHHF who visited Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong from 01 October 2013 to 30 April 2016. We measured DITI and HRV of each patient. We used DITI to calculate the severity of CHHF with thermal difference between upper arm (L4, 俠白穴) and palm (P8, 勞宮穴) of both hands and anterior thigh (ST32, 伏兎穴) and dorsum of foot (LI3, 太衝穴) of both feet. The correlation between severity of CHHF and HRV variables were analyzed. Results: In time domain analysis, there was significantly positive correlation between the severity of CHHF and both SDNN and RMSSD. In frequency domain analysis, there was significantly positive correlation between the severity of CHHF and TP, HF and HF Norm while there was significantly negative correlation between the severity of CHHF and LF Norm as well as between the severity of cold hypersensitivity of both hands and LF/HF ratio. Conclusions: The more severe CHHF is, the more increased the function of parasympathetic nerve system (PNS) and relatively decreased the function of sympathetic nerve system (SNS) is. Also, it has known that cold hypersensitivity could be caused by deficiency syndrome and qi deficiency has the same ANS tendency as CHHF. Therefore, in practical fields, this result can be helpful in planning treatment and deciding prognosis in respect of deficiency syndrome.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of egg consumption and suggest proper guidelines for consumption of eggs by determining the relationship between eggs and cholesterol. Methods: Literature review was conducted on the relationship between nutritional, functional properties of eggs and serum cholesterol, as well as cardiovascular disease. Results: Eggs, which are a good protein food with complete amino acid composition, contain vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin $B1_2$, folic acid, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, calcium, iron, choline, selenium, ${\beta}$-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, etc. However the egg yolk has a high cholesterol content, which is associated with chronic diseases, including heart disease and hypertension. As a result, its intake is subject to regulation. Outbreak of heart disease by yolk intake can show different results depending on the characteristics of the subjects, amount of egg intake, and the implications of other foods eaten. It is difficult to determine whether eggs are beneficial, as they are the main supplying source for other major nutritive elements as well. Several research studies insist that when cholesterol intake increases by 100 mg, the level of serum cholesterol increases by 2.2~4.5 mg/dL and when serum cholesterol increases by 1%, the risk of heart disease increases by 2%. This indicates that a large intake of eggs can increase the risk of heart disease. Although the cholesterol of egg yolk and serum cholesterol are correlated, it is insufficient to conclude that only cholesterol and not other components are related to heart disease. In fact, other components in egg such as various unsaturated fatty acids and phospholipids could be related as well. Rather than concluding egg as a 'good' or 'bad' food according to its cholesterol content, it is important to define egg as a part of dietary patterns. Conclusion: Generalizing an indiscriminate and uniform amount of egg intake for all seems inadequate. However, patients with diabetes or heart disease should pay particular attention to the amount of egg intake. As for the norm, eating egg with vegetables as a substitute for other animal products seems beneficial.

  • The effective length method for flexural (column) buckling has been used for many decades but its use is somewhat limited in various contemporary design codes to moderately slender structures with elastic critical load factor (${\lambda}_{cr}$) less than 3 to 5. In pace with the use of higher grade steel in recent years, the influence of buckling in axial buckling resistance of a column becomes more important and the over-simplified assumption of effective length factor can lead to an unsafe, an uneconomical or a both unsafe and uneconomical solution when some members are over-designed while key elements are under-designed. Effective length should not normally be taken as the distance between nodes multiplied by an arbitrary factor like 0.85, 1.0, 2.0 etc. Further, the classification of non-sway and sway-sensitive frames makes the conventional design procedure tedious to use and, more importantly, limited to simple regular frames. This paper describes the practical use of second-order analysis with section capacity check allowing for $P-{\delta}$ and $P-{\Delta}$ effects together with member and system imperfections. Most commercial software considers only the $P-{\Delta}$ effect, but not member and frame imperfections nor $P-{\delta}$ effect, and engineers must be very careful in their uses. A verification problem is also given for validation of software for this type of powerful second-order analysis and design. It is a trend for popular and advanced national design codes in using the second-order analysis as a norm for analysis and design of steel structures while linear analysis may only be used in very simple structures.

  • This paper considers the optimal cell association and resource allocation for load balancing in a heterogeneous cellular network subject to user's quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. We adopt the proportional fairness (PF) utility maximization formulation which also accommodates the QoS constraints in terms of minimum rate requirements. With equal resource allocation this joint optimization problem is either infeasible or requires relaxation that yields a solution which is difficult to implement. Nevertheless, we show that this joint optimization problem can be effectively solved without any priori assumption on resource allocation and yields a cell association scheme which enforces single BS association for each user. We re-formulated the joint optimization problem as a network-wide resource allocation problem with cardinality constraints. A reweighted heuristic l1-norm regularization method is used to obtain a sparse solution to the re-formulated problem. The cell association scheme is then derived from the sparsity pattern of the solution, which guarantees a single BS association for each user. Compared with the previously proposed method based on equal resource allocation, the proposed framework results in a feasible cell association scheme and yields a robust solution on resource allocation that satisfies the QoS constraints. Our simulations illustrate the impact of user's minimum rate requirements on cell association and demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves load balancing and enforces single BS association for users.
