High order statistical parameters were evaluated using the electrochemical noise data collected during corrosion of type 430 stainless steel coupled to a inert, platinum electrode in 3.5% NaCl solution. High order statistical parameters are shown to predict uniform corrosion properly. However, Localization index, skewness of current, kurtosis and skewness of potential are capable of predicting pitting corrosion only when the transients are large with long life time. Of the high order statistical parameters evaluated, kurtosis of current is found to be the most sensitive parameter for detecting uniform and pitting corrosion.

This paper is concerned with the characteristics on the statistical parameters of vibration signal from bearing with changing its operating conditions as well as the spreading of faults. The rms, Kurtosis, crest factor, probability of exceedance and probability density function have been chose as the statistical parameters. To characterize of each, vibration signals have been recorded from four ball tester at different loads, operation speeds and time. The values of the statistical parameters for each frequency band have been calculated after A/D conversion and digital filtering of the recorded signals. It has been found that unlike rms values the statistical parameters such as Kurtosis etc. are almost unchanging with the change of the operating conditions such as load and speed. This suggests that the statistical parameters may be used for determining the development of faults independent of the operating conditions. In fact, the statistical parameters deviate considerably from their respective normal values when the faults developed under load conditions in the samples, conforming the suggestion.

This paper proposes an independent component analysis(ICA) of the fixed-point (FP) algorithm based on secant method and the kurtosis. The FP algorithm based on secant method is applied to improve the analysis speed and performance by simplifying the calculation process of the complex derivative in Newton method, the kurtosis is applied to cluster the components. The proposed ICA has been applied to the problems for separating the 6-mixed signals of 500 samples and 8-mixed images of $512{\times}512$ pixels, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed ICA has always a fixed analysis sequence. The result can be solved the limit of conventional ICA based on secant method which has a variable sequence depending on the running of algorithm. Especially, the proposed ICA can be used for classifying and identifying the signals or the images.

This paper presents a new kurtosis-based algorithm for blind separation of convolutively mixed source signals. The algorithm whitens the signals not only spatially but also temporally beforehand. A separator is built for the whitened signals and it exists in the set of para-unitary matrices. Since the set forms a curved manifold, it is hard to treat its elements. In order to avoid the difficulty, this paper introduces the Cayley transformation for the para-unitary matrices. The transformed matrix is referred to as para-skew-Hermitian matrix and the set of such matrices forms a linear space. In the set of all para-skew-Hermitian matrices, the kurtosis-based algorithm obtains a desired separator. This paper also shows the algorithm's application to electrogastrogram datum which are observed by 4 electrodes on subjects' abdomen around their stomachs. An electrogastrogram contains signals from a stomach and other organs. This paper obtains independent components by the algorithm and then extracts the signal corresponding to the stomach from the data.

Most of the high voltage insulation systems, such as the power cable joint having hetero interface, are composed of more than two different insulators to improve insulating performance. The partial discharge(PD) in these hetero interface is expected to affect the total insulation performance. Thus, it is important to study electrical properties on these interfaces. This study described the influence of copper and semiconductive substance defects on $\Phi$-q-n distribution between the interface of the model cable joints to classify PD source. PD was sequentially detected for 600 cycles of the applied voltage. The K-means cluster analysis has been analyzed to investigate the $\Phi$-q-n distribution. The skewness-kurtosis(Sk-Ku) plot from K-means clustering results was defined to quantify cluster distribution and classify distribution patterns. The Sk-Ku plot is composed of skewness and kurtosis along abscissa and ordinate which indicate the asymmetry and the sharpness of distribution. As a result of the Sk-Ku plot, it was confirmed that the data was distributed in 1st 2nd and 3rd quadrant at copper foreign substance defect, but in case of semiconductive foreign substance, the data was distributed in 2nd quadrant only.
Outliers and influential data points distort many data analysis measures. Jang and Anderson-Cook (2014) proposed a graphical method called a rework plot for exploratory analysis purpose so that there could be a possible visualization of the trace of the impact of the possible outlying and/or influential data points on the univariate/bivariate data analysis and regression. They developed 3-D plot as well as pairwise plot for the appropriate measures of interest. This paper further extends their approach to identify its strength. We can use rework plots as a graphical exploratory data analysis tool to evaluate the impact of outliers in skewness and kurtosis of univariate data.

This paper proposes a method for enhancing detection performance and reducing computational cost when detecting a human face by applying B-spline active contour to the frame difference of consecutive images. Firstly, the method estimates amount of user's motion using kurtosis. If the kurtosis is smaller than a pre-defined threshold, it is considered that the amount of user's motion is insufficient and thus the contour fitting is not applied. Otherwise, the contour fitting is applied by exploiting the fact that the amount of motion is sufficient. Secondly, for the contour fitting, difference edges are detected by combining the distance transformation of the binarized frame difference and the edges of current frame. Lastly, the face is located by assigning the contour fitting process to the detected difference edges. Kurtosis-based motion amount estimation can reduce a computational cost and stabilize the results of the contour fitting. In addition, distance transformation-based difference edge detection can enhance the problems of contour lag and discontinuous difference edges. Experimental results confirm that the proposed method can reduce the face localization error caused by the contour lag and discontinuity of edges, and decrease the computational cost by omitting approximately 39% of the contour fitting.
Objective: To evaluate the performance of baseline clinical characteristics and pretherapeutic histogram parameters derived from T2 mapping of the extraocular muscles (EOMs) in the prediction of treatment response to intravenous glucocorticoid (IVGC) therapy for active and moderate-to-severe thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) and to investigate the effect of fat-suppression (FS) in T2 mapping in this prediction. Materials and Methods: A total of 79 patients clinically diagnosed with active, moderate-to-severe TAO (47 female, 32 male; mean age ± standard deviation, 46.1 ± 10 years), including 43 patients with a total of 86 orbits in the responsive group and 36 patients with a total of 72 orbits in the unresponsive group, were enrolled. Baseline clinical characteristics and pretherapeutic histogram parameters derived from T2 mapping with FS (i.e., FS T2 mapping) or without FS (i.e., conventional T2 mapping) of EOMs were compared between the two groups. Independent predictors of treatment response to IVGC were identified using multivariable analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the predictive performance of the prediction models. Differences between the models were examined using the DeLong test. Results: Compared to the unresponsive group, the responsive group had a shorter disease duration, lower kurtosis (FS-kurtosis), lower standard deviation, larger 75th, 90th, and 95th (FS-95th) T2 relaxation times in FS mapping and lower kurtosis in conventional T2 mapping. Multivariable analysis revealed that disease duration, FS-95th percentile, and FS-kurtosis were independent predictors of treatment response. The combined model, integrating all identified predictors, had an optimized area under the ROC curve of 0.797, 88.4% sensitivity, and 62.5% specificity, which were significantly superior to those of the imaging model (p = 0.013). Conclusion: An integrated combination of disease duration, FS-95th percentile, and FS-kurtosis was a potential predictor of treatment response to IVGC in patients with active and moderate-to-severe TAO. FS T2 mapping was superior to conventional T2 mapping in terms of prediction.
