Newly bleaching sequence using oxygen, ozone and hydrogen peroxide has introduced to avoid pollution hazards from chlorinated organic compounds, because chlorine dioxide substitution bleaching was produced a little chlorinated organic substance. Oxygen-type chemicals replaced for chlorine has attracted much research attention. Bleachability of ozone was improved at low temperature and high pulp consistency. In third bleaching followed OZ bleaching, addition of O2 and NaBH4 in alkali extraction was effective than only alkali extraction. Bleachability of pulps in ozone bleaching(Z) was improved at higher consistency and lower temperature The addition O2 and NaBH4 in alkali extraction after OZ bleaching sequence improved brightness, when compared to those obtained by only alkaline extraction. Pulps bleached by ECF bleaching sequences such as OZEoD and OZEopD was obtained by 90% ISO brightness. The brightness of pulp bleached by TCF sequences with the ozone dosage of 1.6% was approached to target brightness (88~90%ISO). Pulps bleached Z stage combined bleaching sequence was reduced the viscosity to a little greater extent. However, physical properties of pulps was not great different compared to those bleached by conventional bleaching sequences. A pollution index of bleaching effluente by ozone combined bleaching sequences was lower than by conventional bleaching sequence, but somewhat higher than multistage bleaching sequences combined C/D stage.

The use of genetically cloned xylanase acquired from Bacillus strearthermophillus improves bleachability for oak kraft pulps. Combination of xylanase(X). oxygen(O), ozone(Z). peroxide(P), alkaline extraction(Eo. Eop), and chlorination(C/D, D) have been tested in a variety of bleaching sequences. The effectiveness of xylanase pre-treatment(XO) and post-treatment(OX) in oxygen bleaching is mainly compared. With xylanase treatment the brightness increase by 1.5-2.1% ISO in OZEP, OZEoP, OZEopP and OPZP sequences. There is only numerically difference of brightness gains between OX and XO sequences. With xylanase treatment chemical requirements for bleaching decrease by 42.6-48.6% in OC/DEoD sequence and 47.9-54.7% as active chlorine in OC/DEopD sequence at the same brightness. the reduction of bleaching chemicals is higher in XO sequence than those in OX sequence. Following xylanase treatment the viscosity increases from 11.7-12.0 mPa·s to 12.4-13.5 mPa·s and the brightness stability is considerably improved however the difference of effectiveness between XO and OX sequence is not present. Compared to tensile index vs tear index, the physical properties are similar for TCF bleaching sequences with and without xylanase treatments. However in OC/DEoD and OC/DEopD sequences the physical properties decrease with xylanase treatment. There is no difference in the physical properties between XO and OX sequences. COD, BOD and color of bleaching effluents increase slightly with xylanase treatment, however the discharge of COD end-load into environmental impact decrease.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the type of base papers containing rice straw-BKP on the properties and printabilities of coated papers. Also, it was intended to evaluate the effect of coated paper prepared with anionic and amphoteric latex based coating color. The results obtained from this study were as follows. The fiber length of rice straw-BKP was observed much shorter than those of the wood pulps(Sw-BKP, Hw-BKP). This has effect on physical properties. Therefore, the results of measured physical properties were much lower than those of wood pulps. Also, physical properties tended to increase slightly with the increase of the mixing ratio of Sw-BKP. Opacity of the base paper containing rice straw-BKP, was higher than that of the wood pulps. As the mixing ratio of Sw-BKP increases the opacity tended to decrease. On the other hand, smoothness and roughness to rice straw-BKP were similar with Sw-BKP and its air permeability was lower than those of wood pulps. The optical properties of coated papers containing rice straw-BKP tended to be similar to those of other base papers. The ink receptivity of coated papers containg rice straw-BKP was higher than those of wood pulps and printing gloss was similar to wood pulps. The mixing ratio of Sw-BKP, the ink receptivity and printing gloss of rice straw-BKP were showed no difference irrespective the mixing ratio of Sw-BKP. Meannwhile, amphoteric latex improved the optical properties and printability of coated papers.

The paper discusses the combined use of softwood and eucalyptus kraft pulps in the production of printing and writing papers. Looking for process and paper quality optimization, refining pilot plant trails were carried to identify the effects of refining type (mixed or separate) and intensities (specific edge load), and also furnish composition (amount of each pulp in mixture) on final paper quality and process costs. The basic effects on pulp fibers were evaluated against paper quality properties, such as physical strengths, bulk, vessel picking, opacity and porosity, as well as the interactions with papermaking process, such as estimates of paper machine runnability, paper breaks and industrial refining control. The results show that the furnish composition and the type of refining has a significant effect on properties related with both final paper quality and total costs. The best alternative for printing and writing papers was identified for mixed refining, under the lowest refining intensity, and with the highest dosage of eucalyptus pulp.

The purpose of this study was to decrease pollutants of effluents from KP bleaching. Multistage bleaching that combined with O, Eo, and C/D stage was conducted, after optimum bleaching conditions of O, Eo, and C/D stage were determined. Moreover the properties for bleached pulps and pollution level of bleaching effluent were measured by each standard method. Due to increase on the brightness and delignification of pulps by O, Eo, and C/D stage bleaching. It was possible that bleaching sequences were reduced from five stage to four stage. In addition to, OC/DEoD and OC/DEopD bleaching sequences had higher brightness than CEDED bleaching sequence. The pulps bleached by O and Eo stage had higher in tensile index than conventional bleaching sequences with the similar results in burst and tear index. While each bleaching sequences had little differences, bleaching sequences with Eo stage had higher in physical properties than with Eop stage. The pollution level measured by Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) and Color of bleaching effluents were much lower in combined bleaching sequences of O, Eo and C/D stage than that of CEDED sequence. Particularly, a pollution index of bleaching effluents generated by C/DEoDEB and OC/DEopDED bleaching sequences were lower than that from the other bleaching sequences.
To separate and utilize the main components of hardwood (Quercus mongolica) by organosov pulping (ester pulping), chips were cooked at various conditions such as; the solvent ratio (acetic acid: ethylacetate: water, 50:25:25; 33:33:34; 25:50:25), maximum temperature (165, 170, $175^{\circ}C$), and cooking times (2, 2.5, 3 hr). The pulps were bleached by the sequences of CEDED, C/DEDED, PEDED. Lignin, sugars, and acetic acid were separated from black liquor and washing liquors. 1. The selective delignification at optimal pulp yield (43-45%) was obtained by cooking at acetic acid: ethylace tate: water ratio of 33:34:34 for 3 hr at $170^{\circ}C$. But in this case, kappa no. of the pulp was not reduced under 60 points. 2. Kappa no. of the pulp could be dropped by an acetone wash to remove reprecipitated lignin a t cooked pulp. 3. The unbleached pulps had a brightness of 45-50%, whereas the bleached pulps gave at 88-93% brightness. Tensile, burst, and tear strengths of the bleached pulps were lower than those of kraft pulp, especially in tear strength. The pulps which were bleached with CEDED sequence were higher in strengths than another bleaching sequences. 4. Lignin of 90-95%(lignin base on wood)was separated from black liquor and washing liquors, while the purified sugars and recovery of acetic acid were a low. An organic phase composed of acetic acid, ethylacetate, and water was separated to a two-phase system by proper adjustment of the solvent ratios.

The role of short fibre pulp - Mixed Harwood, Eucalyptus, Aspen, Birch, etc for the manufacture of different grades of paper is very well recognized. At the same time, lots of efforts are in progress to maximize the advantages while preserving their own special property. Bleached Acacia Kraft Pulp (BAKP) is comparatively new entry but gained quick recognition. BAKP was introduced to the world market by South East Asian suppliers in the late 1990's. This paper discusses in detail the role and opportunities of use of short fibre pulps. A logical technical comparison has been made between BAKP and another short fibre grades. BAKP being a short, thin-walled fibre shows several similarities with Eucalyptus pulp in terms of good bulk and stiffness. Refining energy and strength properties are very similar, but the shorter fibres and thinner cell walls give an outstanding opacity and formation compared to other commercial short fibre pulps. The collapsed and band-shaped nature gives a matchless smoothness, enabling less calendaring and exceptional printing properties. BAKP is shown to give several advantages to fine paper manufactures, compared with a number of established short fibre pulps such as Brazilian and Chilean Eucalyptus, Canadian Aspen and Indonesian Mixed Hardwood. It is important to consider refining and calendaring conditions to achieve optimum performance. For outer layers of multiply board, Acacia gives excellent coverage due to its high opacity and uniform fibre distribution. Its low roughness property gives improved printability. For tissue products, Acacia gives unique property of superior softness both in terms of hand feel and bulk softness. The high fibre population gives an impression of much higher quality due to the higher opacity and good formation.

Stricter environmental demands have increased the need to replace conventional C/D bleaching sequence by chlorine-free sequence. Permanganate is well known as a powerful oxidant and have been used industrially in variable fields. However, it has considered to be difficult to use permanganate as a bleaching reagent because of its strong oxidative effect decreasing the viscosity of pulps extremely. We have tried to use permanganate as a bleaching reagent for KP under the mild condition and it was clear that pernanganate oxidized lignin remained in pulps selectively and increased pulp brightness decreasing K number of pulps with small degradation of cellulose. We have employed the neutral condition in the permanganate bleaching process in this study. In this case, permanganate was converted to manganese dioxide after bleaching reaction. The manganese dioxide is remained in the treated pulp fibers because of its insolublity in water. So it was required to reduction the manganese oxide to manganese ion by using reductants with acid. In this paper, we proposed to use oxalic acid as a reducing reagent converting manganese oxide to manganese ion after bleaching reaction. Oxalic acid plays the role as a reductant and a acid, so post-treatment after bleaching became to be easy by using oxalic acid. On the study using lignin model compounds, it was clear that permaganate react with phenols firstly, after that oxalic acid reduce the manganese oxide to manganese ion in the mixture of permanganate, phenols and oxalic acid. Several lignin model compounds ($\textit{p}$-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillin, syringaldehyde, veratraldehyde) are selected to elucidate the effect of substituents on reaction rate and its mechanism with permanganate including oxalic acid in this study. Except for veratraldehyde, the rate of oxidative degradation of phenolic compounds by permanganate with oxalic acid are higher than neutral condition. Especially, the degradation rate of $\textit{p}$-hydroxybenzaldehyde are strongly dependent on pH of reaction mixture. On the other hand, the degradation rate of veratraldehyde are decreased with decreasing pH and main degradation product is veratric acid. This result indicate that pH of bleaching liquor should be kept over 2 to degrade of non-phenolic lignin in the pulps effectively in permanganate bleaching.
There are a lot of serious problums associated with conventional pulping processes, such as kraft and sulfite. In order to tackle these difficulties, organic acid pulping of Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Pinus densiflora S. et Z. have been investigated as on alternative method. The acetic acid cooking of Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee achieved good delignification with pulp yields of 55-65% under almost all cooking conditions. In the acetic acid cooking of Pinus densiflora S. et Z., it was not cooked at a low temperature. The strength properties of the acetic acid pulps from Pinus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee showed the optimum with 95% acetic acid concentration at $185^{\circ}C$ maximum cooking temperature for 0.5hr cooking time. The strength properties of the acetic acid pulps from Pinus densiflora S. et Z. displayed excellent tear strength in comparison with those of the other softwoods. In the process of acetic acid cooking, glucose has been removed a little, but other sugars have been eliminated. The elemental compositions and $C_9$ formulas of acetosolv lignins from Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee were 63.88% carbon, 5.45% hydrogen and 30.67% oxygen and $C_9H_{9.15}O_{3.24}$ The elemental compositions and $C_9$ formulas of acetosolv lignins from Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were 61.85% carbon, 6.14% hydrogen and 32.01% oxygen and $C_9H_{9.15}O_{3.50}$ The Wt. av. MWT's of the acetosolv lignins from Pinus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were 731 and 725.

As a part of the study on manufacture of low density paper by organic bulky agent treatment, the effects of cationic fatty acid bulky agent on physical and optical properties of handsheets were elucidated. The research on change of physical and optical properties of paper samples according to bulky agent concentration, pulp type, and pulp combination were carried out. The results demonstrated that an increase of the concentration of cationic fatty acid bulky agent was proportional to an increase of the bulky properties of paper samples while tensile strength decreased. Also, the more the treated concentration of cationic fatty acid bulky agent increased, the more the ISO brightness of paper samples decreased while the opacity increased. The effectiveness of bulky agent with softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) was higher than that with hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP). In addition, the effectiveness with mixed pulps was higher than that with single pulp.
