The purpose of this study was to identify the design concepts embedded in our traditional interior space. The majority of this research was achieved through literature review as well as examining traditional Korean houses. This is created possible by the careful placement of indispensable furnitures and accessaries resulting in an abundance of unoccupied space. Therefore, the room assumes a peaceful atmosphere which calms the mind and creates a tranquil setting. To enjoy the placidity of Korean interior space a humble demeanor and contemplative thought are required. Next, traditional Korean interior space is modest. This is created by the moderate proportions that do not challenge human scale. Traditional Korean interior space does not dominate its surroundings but rather conforms with them. This contrasts with traditional western houses which utilizes an overbearing scale sacrificing intimate space. Thirdly, traditional Korean interior space is raw. In other words, the materials used in house retain their self-evident natural state and are not artifically manipulated to hide their inherent properties. The fundamental conceptual belief that interior space should not defy nature but instead become part of it. Lastly, traditional Korean interior space is not decorative Rooms are not congested with frivolous aesthetics. Although this does not immediately attract the people's attention, eventually the interior space establishes a unique line of communication with them.

The cultural identity of design is very critical in the modern society which is called the society of complex culture and multi-culture. In addition, adopting a traditional lattice-like pattern as a composition element of interior space is an effective way in the context of adding a traditional touch to the modern interior space. Meanwhile, in the process of applying Korean traditional lattices to modern interior space, some problems occurred: it has not been properly embodied; or it has been mistaken for those of China and Japan sharing similar culture with Korea. Thus, this study is designed to have precise knowledge of Korea, Chinese and Japanese traditional lattices. Besides, typical patterns of each nation's lattices are comparatively analyzed from the geometrical viewpoint, in a bid to pave the way for th modernization of traditional lattices. In particular, standards are set and proposed to identify different nations's lattices mainly focusing on grid type lattices which are often used and confusing.

With development of digital technology and build-up of global network in the 21st century, Korea has recklessly accepted Western information and culture in recent years, thus causing damages to out identity. In the situation, restoration and development of traditions in a modern way will contribute to the creation of contemporary interiors. This study has analyzed and assessed the process through which traditional decorative elements have applied to contemporary interior decorations over the past ten years with a view to identify the trend of expressing traditional elements in comtemporary interiors. Designs that have applied traditional elements in a transfigure expression method amounted to 77 pieces, accounting for $43\%$ of the total investigated 178 designs, which was followed by 48 designs ($27\%$) of metaphor expression method and 39 designs ($22\%$) of symbol expression method, which express the tradition as interpreted by the designer. Designs that have adopted direct expression method amounted to no more than 14 pieces, accounting only for $8\%$ of the total designs. This result suggests that transformative, metaphoric and symbolic expressions that simplify or transform the original forms we more frequently used In the applications of traditional elements to modern interiors rather than directive expression that reproduces the original form as it was.

The ideal housing in the 21st century means that it can provide people with the balanced life between nature and human life, while is possible through the systematic harmony of nature, environment, and human. As our society increasingly pays attention to the importance of environment, environment friendly houses and ecological dwellings are being built. If we add our own cultural environment attribute and historical identity to the ecological housing, we can create the most unique Korean ecological architecture. This study examines ecological interior expression methods from the traditional housing architecture which started out of nature, in order to find out an ecological approach in the interior design of the dwelling space. Based upon this examination, it mainly focuses on how these methods can be applied to a modern housing architecture. From an ecological perspective, the traditional house interior has two distinct characteristics; nature friendly and human friendly, because it considered nature and human harmoniously. The interior of the traditional housing can be divided into three types; nature friendly, health friendly, and human friendly. Finally, this study investigates the ecological value of the three types and application of them to modern housing. It will help to find out the harmonious way of building a house harmonizing both nature and human. Especially, considering that the nature is being destructed and the health of human is deteriorating due to the destruction of the nature, this study will show a feasible alternative to build the most Korean style of environmental architecture.
