  • The early Joseon era was a period when various medical systems were established and many medical literatures were published. Hwang Ja-hu(黃子厚) was a civil minister and medical professional who worked hard for maintaining government administrative system and medical regime during the Taejong and Sejong reign. Hwang Ja-hu followed his father and made MiReukWon(彌勒院) prosperous for the homeless people around Chungcheong-do Hoedeok. Hwang Ja-hu was talented in policy development as a government official. He was also learned in medicine, thus always doubled as head of JeonUiGam(典醫監). Hwang Ja-hu reformed the irrationalities in medical regime. He legalized JeonUiGam duties such as the presenting of the medicine or the preparation of the medicine and had the doctors take charge. He also suggested training acupuncture specialists(鍼灸專門醫). Hwang Ja-hu played a leading role in spreading HyangYak(鄕藥) throughout the country and reissuing [HyangYakGuGeupBang(鄕藥救急方)] due to personal philanthropism and service. He tried to defeat illnesses by letting the common people understand the symptoms and use medicine accordingly. Also he intended [HyangYakGuGeupBang(鄕藥救急方)] which was written focused on 'easiness book'(簡易方), 'experience book'(經驗方) to be used for the common people because [HyangYakJipSungBang(鄕藥集成方)] was made up a huge volume andused for training medical professionals and for accumulating knowledge. Hwang Ja-hu pursed subdivision of medical systems and specialization of medicine but also promoted medical rights. We should continue to discover and introduce medical figures who understood medicine and improved the medical systems.

  • We have summarized a large part of the history of Korean medicine from a macroscopic perspective. However, many aspects still remain incomplete from a microscopic perspective. This is partly because the society under the Chosun dynasty was dominated by the gentry class and they were not active in the field of medicine. However, another reason is that, unlike the Chinese, these people left behind few medical case records (醫案, eui-an) that vividly describe the treatment methods prevalent during those times. This may be attributed to the fact that during those times, the focus of medical doctors was not on recording their knowledge and experiences, but on simplification of diagnosis and treatments for practical use. However, since medical case records of any era provide an insight into the state of medical provision at that time, they could play an important role in providing concrete knowledge regarding the state of medicine under the Chosun dynasty, and in understanding the uniqueness of Korean medicine in detail. Therefore, in this article we discuss the recently discovered Gyeongheombang (經驗方), which is archived at the Korea University, and through this we aim to add a new source of detailed information on Korean medicine, and to identify the potential of Korean medicine by demonstrating its uniqueness.

  • More correlations are expected to be formed by comparing and analyzing three medical prescription texts, "Hyangyakjipseongbang", "Euirimchyalyo" and "Dongeuibogam". And to firmly systemize the medicine native to Korea, more studies should be done on it, added to comparatively studies of native medical prescription texts.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the prescription of Geoseohwajung-tang which often appears in Kim Yeoung-hun's medical records and how he employed this prescription. Geoseohwajung-tang is a prescription that can be found in no books of medicine in East Asia other than Kim Yeoung-hun's medical records, his posthumous work, Cheongganguigam, and Seungjeongwon Ilki, the diaries of royal secretariat of the Joseon dynasty. It was mostly used for digestive problems resulted from eating wrong food in summer and diversely applied by changing the composition of the medicinal ingredients according to the patient's symptoms. To see how Geoseohwajung-tang was used clinically, the researcher analyzed Kim Yeoung-hun's medical records written in 1915~1924. Among his total 21,369 medical records, 549 ones included Geoseohwajung-tang, and all of them were in July to September, so we can see that it was a prescription for the summer season. The use of the prescription was not highly related with the patient's gender, occupation, or age. The names of the diseases are mostly diarrhea, dysentery, acute vomiting with diarrhea, and all of them are highly related with diarrhea. The causes of them are mostly summer-heat, dampness, and food poison.
