  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A large number of studies on anemia have focused mostly on pregnant women or children. The vegetarian population, which is another potential risk group for anemia, remains largely unexplored. Therefore, this cross-sectional study examined the associations of the sociodemographic, lifestyle, nutritional, and psychological factors with the anemia status among female adult vegetarians. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 177 female vegetarians were recruited from a Buddhist and Hindu organization in Selangor, Malaysia. The participants completed a self-administered questionnaire, which analyzed their sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity level, sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and stress. The body weight, height, waist circumference, and body fat percentage of the participants were also measured. A 3-day dietary recall was conducted to assess their dietary intake. Blood samples (3 ml) were withdrawn by a nurse from each participant to determine the hemoglobin (Hb) level. RESULTS: The findings revealed 28.2% of the participants to be anemic. The age group (AOR = 2.46, 95% CI = 1.19-5.05), marital status (AOR = 2.69, 95% CI = 1.27-5.71), and percentage of energy from protein (AOR = 5.52, 95% CI = 1.41-21.65) were the significant predictors of anemia. CONCLUSIONS: Anemia is a public health problem among female vegetarians in this study. Health promotion programs that target female adult vegetarians should be conducted to manage and prevent anemia, particularly among those who are married, aged 50 and below, and with an inadequate protein intake.

  • Nutrition is very essential for growth, development and reproduction. The quantitative impetus of nutritional factor on adult characters and reproductive fitness was studied in Antheraea mylitta by providing fresh leaves of Terminalia tomentosa for 1 to 4 times a day to $5^{th}$ instar larvae. All the characters have improved on giving fresh diet more times over the single diet. The adult weight has strong effect on the reproductive potential i.e., female pupa and moth weight, survivability, pupation rate, emergence percentage, fecundity, fertility, egg weight and hatched out larval weight. The improvement recorded to the tune of $70\%,\;77.1\%,\;115.4\%,\;36.7\%,\;45.9\%\;and\;218.3\%$ in larval weight gain, survivability, pupation rate, female pupa weight, moth weight and fecundity respectively when fresh diets were provided 4 times a day against single diet. The adult emergence percentage has increased from $66.4\%\;to\;96.2\%$ and fertility rose from $52.2\%\;to\;93.6\%$. The weight of eggs and the larvae hatched out of it also found to be significantly higher in 4 diets a day condition. The study revealed that optimization of fresh diet frequency should be maintained to obtain higher egg production and fertility in order to get vigorous larvae to continue the generation.

  • Two adult rock partridges raised in a city zoo were examined parasitologically and pathologically. Two distinctive eggs resembling those of Capillaria and Heterakis were detected in the feces. At necropsy, a markedly-dilated duodenum with severe catarrhal exudates, containing adult worms of Capillaria sp. and Heterakis sp. in the cecum, was observed. Male Capillaria had the cloacal aperture extended almost terminally with a small bursal lobe and an unsheathed spicule with transverse folds without spines. Female Capillaria had a vulva that was slightly prominent and slightly posterior to the union of the esophagus and intestine. The esophagus of the adult Capillaria was more than a half as long as the body in the male, but was much shorter in the female. Based on these morphological features, the capillarid nematode was identified as Capillaria obsignata. The male adult worms of Heterakis was identifiable by 2 dissimilar spicules, a unique morphological feature where the right spicule was considerably longer than the left, which is also a characteristic feature of Heterakis gallinarum. This is the first report of concurrent infections with C. obsignata and H. gallinarium in rock partridges.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to determine the optimum low-density lipoprotein : high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL : HDL-C) ratio for predicting coronary heart disease(CHD) in Korean people. Methods: It was analyzed this data of 5,431 adults who had undergone health examinations in a hospital in Gyeonggi-do between January 2006 and December 2007. The covariation of the coronary risk factors such as age, HbA1C, systolic blood pressure(SBP), and waist-to-stature ratio(WSR) were analyzed by using logistic regression analysis. Results: The LDL : HDL-C ratio in the male and female groups was mostly distributed between 1.5 and 4.0. The LDL : HDL-C ratio was the most significant cholesterol-related parameter influencing CHD (male: B = .306, p = .054, female : B = .940, p = .010), followed by LDL-C and total cholesterol. It was observed a sharp increase in the odds ratios for LDL : HDL-C ratios of 2.25 - 2.50(male) and 2.00 - 2.25(female). A significant difference was observed in both male(2.25 : $x^2$ = 2.494, p = .072) and female(2.00 : $x^2$ = 413.742, p = .000) groups. Conclusion: The risk level of CHD was set to 2.25 for males and 2.00 for females. Therefore, the optimum LDL : HDL-C ratio for Koreans should be far lower than that for the people in western countries.

  • Effects of 9 acaricides to the predatory mite, Neoseiulus californicus were evaluated. Seven of the acaricides tested, cyenopyrafen. spirodiclofen, spiromesifen, acequinocyl, bifenazate, flufenoxuron and cyflumetofen exhibited low toxicity to adult females and nymphs of N. californicus and had little effect on the reproduction and eclosion of eggs deposited by treated predators. Moreover, hatch percentage of N. californicus eggs was unaffected by exposure to these seven acaricides. Etoxazole did not significantly affect the survival and reproduction of adult female predators but caused very low eclosion in eggs laid by treated females and high egg mortality. Pyraclofos was extremely toxic to adult female predators and caused 100% mortality. Adult female predators survived on a diet of spider mites treated with cyenopyrafen. spirodiclofen, spiromesifen, acequinocyl, bifenazate, flufenoxuron and cyflumetofen and their fecundity was not substantially affected. Based on the results, cyenopyrafen. spirodiclofen, spiromesifen, acequinocyl, bifenazate, flufenoxuron and cyflumetofen are appeared to be promising candidates for use in integrated mite management program where N. californicus is the major natural enemy.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of pupal development and adult longevity of Spodoptera litura larvae reared on leaves of different leguminos plants of 11 varieties or cultivars. Pupal duration varied from 8.7 to 9.5 days depending upon different diets and duration of female pupa (8.3~9.1 days) was about 1 day shorter than that of male's (9.4~10.1 days). Prepupal an postpupal duration were 1.7 to 2.0 days and 6.7 to 7.7 days, respectively. Pupal weight ranged from 0.23g to 0.43g for female and 0.24g to 0.35 g for male. Percent change of pupal weight was lowest (11%) on geomjeongkong-1 and highest (16%) on bukwangkong. Adult longevity was in ranging from 7.8 days on dongbu to 11.2 days on bukwangkong and tended to become slightly longer in female than tin male. Significant relationships were recognized between moisture content of feeding leaf, the pupal duration and weight and adult longevity.

  • This study was carried out with two types of silkworm, Bombyx mori, adults having different life span: long life span (adult living for more than fifteen days; LLS), and short life span (adult living less for than five days; SLS). The fine structures of fat body cells in the young and the senescent males and females were compared in an attempt to elucidate the aging physiology of the silkworm adult. In SLS, there were many rough endoplasmic reticula (RER) and glycogen granules in the female cytoplasm, whereas the smooth endoplasmic reticula (SER) were observed in the male cytoplasm. Also in SLS, the mitochondria were swollen and had many poor osmiophillic inclusions (fatty degeneration) at three days after emergence. In LLS, compared to SLS, comparatively normal mitochondria and nuclear membrane were observed in even five day old female. In fifteen day old LLS female, however most of cell membranes were disappeared and mitochondria were abnormally expanded. Many fat granules were observed in the cytoplasm of ten day old male (LLS) which died with full autophagic vacuole (AV) collapsed at fifteen days. Therefore, it is suggested that SLS type is recommended for the study of aging tissue, because it is easier to monitor the changes in tissue structure.

  • Objective: To investigate the three-dimensional lip vermilion changes after extraction and non-extraction orthodontic treatment in female adult patients and explore the correlation between lip vermilion changes and incisor changes. Methods: Forty-seven young female adult patients were enrolled in this study (skeletal Class III patients were excluded), including 34 lip-protruding patients treated by extraction of four first premolars (18 patients requiring mini-implants for maximum anchorage control and 16 patients without mini-implants) and 13 patients requiring non-extraction treatment. Nine angles, seven distances, and the surface area of the lip vermilion were measured by using pre- and post-treatment three-dimensional facial scans. Linear and angular measurements of incisors were performed on lateral cephalograms. Results: There were no significant changes in the vermilion measurements in the non-extraction group. The vermilion angle, vermilion height, central bow angle, height/width ratio, and vermilion surface area decreased significantly after the orthodontic treatment in the extraction groups, but the upper/lower vermilion proportion remained unchanged. Significant correlations were found between the changes in incisor position and those in vermilion angles, vermilion height, and surface area. Conclusions: Extraction of the four first premolars probably produced an aesthetic improvement in lip vermilion morphology. However, the upper/lower vermilion proportion remained unchanged. The variations in the vermilion were closely related to incisor changes, especially the upper incisor inclination changes.
