Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate nursing students' knowledge and beliefs about Kangaroo care (KC). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. Undergraduate students enrolled in departments of nursing (n=322) from three universities in D city participated. Knowledge and beliefs about KC were measured using the Kangaroo Care Questionnaire (KCQ). Results: The overall level of nursing students' knowledge about KC was very low with a mean score of 6.9 out of 17. The mean score for nursing students' beliefs about KC was 87.4 out of 100, indicating relatively positive beliefs. The students who had both education and exposure to KC had higher scores for knowledge and more positive beliefs about KC compared to students with no experience or exposure to KC. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and beliefs about KC (r=.371, p<.001). Conclusion: The results suggest that there is a need to develop educational programs for nursing students in order to increase their knowledge and develop positive beliefs about KC.
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for developing a program for effective health education about AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) by investigating the knowledge and attitudes of middle and high school students about AIDS. The subjects were 476 middle school students and 658 high school students from Seoul and Kang Won province. The data were collected from November 19 to December 18. 1996. using a 56-item questionnaire. and analyzed by SAS program for t-test. x2-test. and pearson correlation coefficients. The results were as follows : 1. High school students had more knowledge than middle school students about AIDS. 2. Male. students from Seoul. and students who had drinking experience and smoking experience among middle school students. and male. students from Seoul. and students of non-coeducation among high school students were more knowledgeable about AIDS. 3. Misconceptions about the transmission of AIDS through non-intimate contact were especially common among middle school students. And a high proportion of middle and high school students knew very little about the symptoms of AIDS. 4. High school students had more positive attitudes toward AIDS than middle school students. 5. Students from Seoul and students who had smoking experience among middle school students. and students from Seoul and non-coeducation and students who had substance use experience among high school students were more positive attitudes about AIDS. 6. Most of the middle and high school students agreed that there is a need for AIDS education. 7. Middle and high school students reported that had learned about AIDS mostly from TV. Since students in the middle-school age group are especially at risk for developing AIDSrelated behaviors. this study findings suggest that it is crucial to develop school-based AIDS education programs that help students acquire the knowledge and attitudes to adopt and maintain behaviors that reduce the risk of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and other related health problems.
Purpose: To provide basic data for strategy of substance abuse through the investigation of the status of substance abuse and knowledge and attitude about drugs in the elementary students. Method: Subjects were 565 6th grade of elementary students. Data were collected from June to July 2001 by using structured questionnaire. Result: 1) Among the students of respondents, 10.2% of them had the experience in smoking, 26.7% and 08% of them in drinking and inhalants, respectively. 2) The degree of students' knowledge about substance was 20.9 points on average with the highest score being 30. Students' knowledge about substances, smoking came on top, next came drinking and inhalants followed them. There were no significant differences in the knowledge of substances by general and drug related characteristics of the students. 3) The students' attitude about substances was negative with 30 points on average with the highest score being 108. The purpose of this study was to research and analyze students' informal knowledge before they learned formal knowledge about fraction concepts and to see how to apply this informal knowledge to teach fraction concepts. According to this purpose, research questions were follows. 1) What is the students' informal knowledge about dividing into equal parts, the equivalent fraction, and comparing size of fractions among important and primary concepts of fraction? 2) What are the contents to can lead bad concepts among students' informal knowledge? 3) How will students' informal knowledge be used when teachers give lessons in fraction concepts? To perform this study, I asked interview questions that constructed a form of drawing expression, a form of story telling, and a form of activity with figure. The interview questions included questions related to dividing into equal parts, the equivalent fraction, and comparing size of fractions. The conclusions are as follows: First, when students before they learned formal knowledge about fraction concepts solve the problem, they use the informal knowledge. And a form of informal knowledge is vary various. Second, among students' informal knowledge related to important and primary concepts of fraction, there are contents to lead bad concepts. Third, it is necessary to use students' various informal knowledge to instruct fraction concepts so that students can understand clearly about fraction concepts.

In this study, 15 evaluation questions about light were developed and presented to 30 middle school students, and then the theory of knowledge space was used to analyze the status of the middle school students' knowledge about light. Not only was the state of the students' knowledge about light intended to be measured by schematizing the knowledge hierarchy obtained; the data obtained were also intended to be used as basic materials to improve the teaching methods used. To achieve the purpose of this study, the evaluation results, the individual knowledge state, and the hierarchy of questions were analyzed. As a result, different knowledge structures were found in the individuals and groups, and it was determined that individuals and groups should be diagnosed differently. In addition, the implication that there is a connection between each question and the individual knowledge state was drawn.
In order to provide the basic data on an education program for successful breast-feeding, the nutrition knowledge of and attitudes toward breast-feeding and the factors associated with infant feeding decision among male and female college students were investigated. The majority of students had correct knowledge of the maternal-infant bonding through breast-feeding and knew more about baby-centered benefits than about mother-centered benefits of breast-feeding. Students' attitudes toward breast-feeding were not so positive as expected, and male students had more positive attitudes toward breast-feeding than female students had. 54.8% of students answered to practice breast-feeding longer than 3 months. Nutrition knowledge scores and attitude scores were significantly higher in the breast-feeding decision group than in the formula-feeding decision group. The students residing in a rural community decided breast-feeding significantly more than the students residing in an urban community. It was concluded that nutrition knowledge about the breast-feeding played a significant role in deciding infant feeding method. In order to increase breast-feeding decision rates among college students, the education program may need to focus on understanding of correct nutrition knowledge about the benefits of breast-feeding. Also it would be important to have male students participated in education program.
