  • An increase in the global production of biodiesel has resulted in the newfound significance of its byproduct, glycerol. The synthesis of acetins is an economical avenue to enhance the value of glycerol derived from biodiesel. WE developed an eco-friendly process for the synthesis of fuel additives from glycerol using a mixed oxide $SO{_4}^{2-}/CeO_2-Al_2O_3$ as catalyst. The $CeO_2-Al_2O_3$ mixed oxide was synthesized by the combustion method and then sulfated. The characterization of the catalyst was by means of XRD, BET, FTIR, and SEM. The influence of temperature, mole ratio and catalyst loading on yield and selectivity of the acetins was studied for the esterification of glycerol. The reaction rate constants ($k_1$, $k_2$ and $k_3$) were estimated using optimization method in MAT lab, and the activation energies ($E_1$, $E_2$ and $E_3$) were determined by the Arrhenius equation. Furthermore, a kinetic model was developed.

  • A computational study on the effect of sweep angle of axial fan on its noise is performed in the present paper. The forward swept axial fan was designed by numerical optimization method incorporated with three dimensional flow analysis. The objective function was defined by the ratio of generation rate of turbulent kinetic energy to pressure head. And, two variables related with sweep angle distribution are used for design variables. The swept fan has better performance characteristics and noise level. The experimental result shows that spectrums of no-sweet and swept fans have differences in the blade passage frequency, especially in the broadband. And the overall noise level of swept fan is lower 10dB(A) than that of no-sweep fan. For the comparison of flow fields between no-sweep fan and swept fan, CFX-TASCflow computational fluid dynamics software is used. Standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model is used for the turbulence model. Distributions of pressure and turbulent kinetic energy distributions are compared in order to find what happen in the low-noise swept fan.

  • It is essential for health monitoring of a cable-stayed bridge to provide more accurate and enough information from the sensors. In experimental modal testing, the chosen measurement locations and the number of measurements have a major influence on the quality of the results. The choice is often difficult for complex structures like a cable-stayed bridge. It is extremely important a cable-stayed bridge to minimize the number of sensing operations required to monitor the structural system. In order to obtain the desired accuracy for the structural test, several issues must take into consideration. Two important issues are the number and location of response sensors. There are usually several alternative locations where different sensors can be located. On the other hand, the number of sensors might be limited due to economic constraints. Therefore, techniques such as methodologies, algorithms etc., which address the issue of limited instrumentation and its effects on resolution and accuracy in health monitoring systems are paramount to a damage diagnosis approach. This paper discusses an optimum sensor placement criterion suitable to the identification of structural damage for continuous health monitoring. A Kinetic Energy optimization technique and an Effective Independence Method are analyzed and numerical and theoretical issues are addressed for a cable-stayed bridge. Its application to a cable-stayed bridge is discussed to optimize the sensor placement for identification and control purposes.

  • Low hemolysis is one of the key factors in the production of successful rotary blood pumps. It is, however, difficult to identify the areas where hemolysis occurs. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis enables the engineer to predict hemolysis on a computer Fluid dynamics in five different axial flow pumps was analyzed 3-dimensionally using CFD software. The impeller was rotated at a speed which supplied a flow of 5L/min at a pressure difference of 100mmHg. Changes in the turbulent kinetic energy along streamlines through the pumps were computed. Reynolds' shear stress( (equation omitted) ) was calculated using the turbulent kinetic energy. Hemolysis was evaluated based on Reynolds'shear stress and its exposure time(t) : dHb/Hb=3.62$\times$10$^{-5}$ $t^{0.785}$$\tau$$^{2.416}$ . Hemolysis of the pumps was measured in vitro using fresh bovine blood to which citrate phosphate dextrose was added to prevent clotting. A pump flow of 5L/min was maintained at a pressure difference of 100mmHg for 3h. The normalized index of hemolysis(NIH) as measured. Reynolds' shear stress was high behind the impellers. The measured NIH and the calculated hemolysis(dHb/Hb) shoed a good correlation; NIH=0.0003(dHb/Hb) (r=0.90, n=6) in the range of NIH between 0.003 and 1.1. CFD analysis can predict the in vitro results of hemolysis as well as the areas where hemolysis occurs.ysis occurs.

  • The Mega-Sub Controlled Structure System (MSCSS), an innovative vibration passive control system for building structures, is improved by adding lead rubber bearings (LRBs) on top of the substructure. For the new system, a genetic algorithm is used to optimize the dynamic parameters and distributions of dampers and LRBs. The program uses various seismic performance indicators as optimization objectives, and corresponding results are compared. It is found that the optimization procedure for maximizing the energy dissipation ratio yields the best solutions, and optimized models have consistent seismic performances under different earthquakes. Seismic performances of optimized MSCSS models with and without LRBs, as well as the traditional Mega-Sub Structure model, are evaluated and compared under El Centro wave, Taft wave and 20 other artificial waves. In both elastic and plastic analysis, the model with LRBs shows significantly smaller story drift and horizontal acceleration than those of the other two models, and fewer plastic hinges are developed during severe earthquakes. Energy analysis also shows that LRBs installed in proper locations increase the deformation and energy dissipation of dampers, thereby significantly reduce the kinetic, potential, and hysteretic energy in the structure. However, LRBs do not have to be mounted on all the additional columns. It is also demonstrated that LRBs at unfavorable locations can decrease the energy dissipation for dampers. After LRBs are installed, the optimal damping coefficient and the optimal damping exponent of dampers are reduced to produce the best damping effect.

  • The aim of this work was to prepare porous osmotic pump tablets for controlled delivery of Aceclofenac. Aceclofenac solid dispersion was prepared to improve the solubility by using the drug - carrier (Mannitol) ratio of 1:1. The osmotic pump tablets were prepared using the solid dispersed product of Aceclofenac. The formulation contains potassium chloride as osmotic agent, cellulose acetate as semipermeable membrane, poly ethylene glycol (PEG 4000) as pore former and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) as solubility enhancer. The formulations were designed by the general factors such as osmotic agent and pore former. All formulations were evaluated for various physical parameters and, the in vitro release studies were conducted as per USP. The drug release kinetic studies such as zero order, first order, and Higuchi and Korsmeyer peppas were determined and compared. All the formulations gave more controlled release compared to the marketed tablet studied. Numerical optimization techniques were applied to found out the best formulation by considering the parameter of in vitro drug release kinetics and dissolution profile standards. It was concluded that the porous osmotic pump tablets (F7) composed of Aceclofenac solid dispersion/Potassium chloride/Lactose/Sodium lauryl sulphate/Magnesium Stearate (400/40/95/10/5, mg/tab) and coating composition with Cellulose acetate/ PEG 4000 (60/40 %w/w) is the most satisfactory formulation. The porous osmotic pump tablets provide prolonged, controlled, and gastrointestinal environment-independent drug release.

  • Designing an ozone contactor is complicated because the residual ozone, log C. parvum inactivation, and bromate formation should be optimized with fluctuating water quality. OCM software was developed to assist a plant designer or an operator to fulfill the sophisticated optimization required in the design or operation of a new or an existing plant. In this article, numerical simulations were carried out using the OCM software for the design of a new ozone contactor under diverse design factors (i.e., three pHs, three temperatures, low and high dispersion numbers, and four and ten cells with complete mixing) with kinetic parameters obtained from the sand-filter effluent of a water treatment plant treating water from the Paldang impoundment. The results of the simulation suggested that a high residual ozone concentration at low pH and low temperature would be challenging, and PFR-like hydrodynamics could lower the residual ozone concentration. The inactivation of C. parvum oocysts increased at a lower pH. A lower dispersion number and more cell division increased the inactivation efficiency. Bromate was instantaneously formed during the initial ozonation stage. The effluent concentration was much lower than the regulatory levels imposed by the USEPA because of the low bromide level in raw water.

  • A damper is a hydraulic device designed to absorb or eliminate shock impulses which is acting on the sprung mass of vehicle. It converting the kinetic energy of the shock into another form of energy, typically heat. In a vehicle, a damper reduce vibration of car, leading to improved ride comfort and running stability. Therefore, a damper is one of the most important components in a vehicle suspension system. Conventionally, the design process of vehicle suspensions has been based on trial and error approaches, where designers iteratively change the values of the design variables and reanalyze the system until acceptable design criteria are achieved. Therefore, the ability to tune a damper properly without trial and error is of great interest in suspension system design to reduce time and effort. For this reason, a many previous researches have been done on modeling and simulation of the damper. In this paper, we have conducted optimal design process to find optimal design parameters of damping force which minimize a acceleration of sprung mass for a given suspension system using genetic algorithm.

  • To stop a high speed train running at the speed of 300 km/h, the disc brake for the train should be able to dissipate enormous kinetic energy of the train into frictional heat energy. Sintered pin-type metals are mostly used for friction materials of high speed brake pads. A pad comprises several friction pins, and the topology, length, flexibility, composition, etc. have a great influence on the tribological properties of the disc brake. In this study, the topology of the friction pins in a pad was our main concern. We presented the optimization of the topology of a railcar brake pad with nine-pin-type friction materials by thermo-mechanical contact analysis. We modeled the brake pad with/without a back plate. To simulate a continuous braking, the pad or friction materials were rotated at constant velocity on the friction surface of the disc. We varied the positions of the nine friction materials to compare the temperature distributions on the disc surface. In a non-optimized brake pad, the distance between two neighboring friction materials in the radial direction from the rotational center of the disc was not equal. In an optimized pad, the distance between two neighboring friction materials in the radial direction was equal. The temperature distribution on the disc surface fluctuated more for the former than the latter. Optimizing the pad reduced the maximum temperature of the brake disc by more than 10%.
