An Anti-Bias Education Program Using Persona-Doll : Effects On Children's Handicap-Acceptance Attitudes (사연있는 인형을 활용한 반편견교육 프로그램이 유아의 장애수용태도에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify differences by gender and experimental treatment in the effectiveness of an anti handicap-bias program using a persona doll. The subjects were 60 kindergarten children of middle socio-economic status in Kyunghi Province, S. Korea. Treatment effects showed that the handicap-acceptance attitude scores of the experimental group were higher than those in the control group, and there were no significant differences in handicap-acceptance attitudes between boys and girls. Young children perceived the persona doll as a soul and a playmate and showed close attachment to it. They recognized the story of the persona doll as fact rather than fiction.

Effects of Reversed Sex-typed Programs on the Sex Role Stereotypes of Preschool Children (비전형적 성역할 교육프로그램이 유치원아의 성역할 고정관념에 미치는 영향)

  • This study used reversed sex-typed programs as an educational tool to teach preschool children about varieties of sex roles. The subjects were 85 four- and five-year-old kindergarten children, half of whom were assigned to the experimental group and half to the control group. The children's sex role stereotypes decreased after participation in reversed sex-typed programs. Girls' scores of sex role stereotypes were higher in terms of own sex and in child and adult activity but lower in terms of the opposite sex than those of boys. There were differences in the scores of sex-role stereotypes in terms of child activity and adult activity.

  • The present study investigated the effects of a theme-relevant play center on children's play behavior and intersubjectivity with an integrated approach to early childhood education. The subjects were 24 kindergarten children (12 boys and 12 girls). Half of the experimental subjects participated in a novel dramatic play center connected with a specific theme for the duration of 5 weeks. pre- and post-testing was conducted for all children. The theme-relevant dramatic play center wits an integrated approach to early education facilitated a high level of play behavior and children's intersubjectivity.

  • We investigated the effects of maternal parenting behavior and preschoolers' social skills on the children's withdrawal behavior. The participants were 92 mothers of five year-old preschoolers and their teachers from two day care centers and one kindergarten in Seoul and Gyeong-gi province. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, t-test and hierarchical regression. The major findings were summarized as follows: (1) there were no differences between the boys' and girls' withdrawal behavior. (2) the mothers' consistent parenting behavior and preschoolers' lack of assertive behavior explained the children's withdrawal behavior. In conclusion, maternal parenting behavior and preschoolers' social skills influence on the children's withdrawal behavior.

  • In this investigation of the effect of art appreciation on children's creativity, art appreciation activities were provided for 20 five-year-old kindergarten children over an 8-week period. Data collected with the use of the General Creativity Test for Children(Chon, 1995) were analyzed by t-test, ANCOVA and regression. Analyses revealed that the experimental group with the art appreciation activities developed a higher level of creativity on all scales of creativity, including originality, fluency, flexibility, and imagination and in all areas of physical, linguistic, and diagrammatic creativity. Boys were more creative than girls in imagination, originality and physical creativity.

조모가 손자녀의 personality 에 미치는 영향

  • A study was made of influence of grandmother on the child's porsonality development. Behavior of randomly sampled 144 kindergarten children aged 5-6: 36 boys and 36 girls who came from general households were comparatively observed and rated by kindergartners who were able to correctly identify the children. Addition to this, interviews were conducted with their grandmothers by the auther. Rating scale used for behavior observations was consisted of 8 traits of personality: independency, dominance, co-operativeness, tolerance, responsibility, needs of achievement, agressiveness, and hostility. The scale for interviews was consisted of 3 domains of grandmothers attitude toward grandchildren; support, over control, and submissiveness. Both scales were carefully constructed and the validity of them were tested. The following results and conclusings were emerged from the study. 1. A moderate and statistically siggnificant relationships were found between the presence of grandmother and decline of dominance, tolerance, and needs of achievement of the boy and needs of achievement of the girl. Hostility of the girl increased by the presence of grandmother. 2. It was showed that most grandmothers inclined to support and submit to grandsons. 3. High negative correlations were obtained between anxiety of grandchildren and independency, cooperativeness, and needs of achievement of them.

The Effects of Maternal Parenting Behaviors and Preschooler's Emotional Regulation on Their Internet-Game Addictive Inclination (유아의 인터넷 게임 중독 경향성에 영향을 주는 어머니 양육행동과 유아의 정서조절)

  • This study investigated the effects of maternal parenting behaviors and preschooler's emotional regulation on their internet-game addictive inclination. The participants were 129 mothers of 5 and 6 year-old preschoolers and their teachers from two day dare centers and one kindergarten in Seoul and Kyung-gi province. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and hierarchical regressions by SPSS program (12.0 version). The major findings were as follows: (1) Boys showed higher score of internet-game addictive inclination than that of girls. (2) mother's consistent parenting behaviors and preschooler's other-regulation behaviors significantly explained preschooler's internet-game addictive inclination. In conclusion, maternal parenting behaviors and preschooler's emotional regulation have influenced on preschooler's internet-game addictive inclination.

Relationship between Mother-Child Communication and the Self-Concept of Young Children (어머니-유아 의사소통과 유아의 자아개념과의 관계)

  • This study analyzed the relationship between mother-child communication and the self-concept of young children. The subjects were 93 three-, four-, and five-year-old kindergarten children and their mothers in the city of Chunju. The self-concept test, mother-child communication inventory for children and the mother-child communication questionnaire for mothers were used. The data were analyzed by T-test, General Linear Models analysis, Duncan's Multiple Range test, Paired T-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The major findings were that (1) the children perceived mother-child communication more intensively than mothers, (2) the more positive communication the children perceived they had with their mothers, the higher their self-concept, (3) the self-concept of 5-year-olds was more highly correlated with perception about mother-child communication than the self-concept of the younger children, and (4) boys' self-concept was more highly correlated with perceived mother-child communication than girls'.

The Peer Competence of Children in Poverty (빈곤층 아동의 또래역량)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe differences in peer competence by children's personality and to investigate the relationship between peer competence and characteristics of children from poor families. The subjects were 79 parents and their 4- to 6-year-old children at a kindergarten in Seoul. The instruments were Iannotti's facial drawings cards, vignettes, "roster and rating" the Family Environment Scale (FES) and the Family Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEQ). The main results of this study were that girls from poor families had higher levels of peer competence than boys. There was a significant correlation between the peer competence of the children in poverty and family characteristics. The children's gender, knowledge of emotion, and mother's negatively dominant conduct were the factors that indicated children's behavior in peer competence. Family conflict and mother's emotional conduct did not relate to children's knowledge of emotion.

Head Louse Infestation among School Children in Sanbuk-myon, Mungyong-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do (1985) (경상북도 문경군 산북면 국민학생의 머릿니 감염 상황(1985))

  • In order to know the prevalence of head louse among the school children in rural area, we visited 3 primary schools and a kindergarten in Sanbuk-myon, Mungyong-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do in July 1985, and examined the children to identify the adult worms of head louse and/or its nits on the hair. The overall infestation rate was 91.9% among 420 children examined, and there was a difference between schools (P<0.05). The school girls' rate, 96.1% was higher than that of boys' 88.9%(P<0.05). By grade, the rate of infant school was 88.5% and 1st to 6th grade were 100, 100, 95.8, 90.4, 89.7, 80.0% respectively. Above result indicates that the head louse is an important health problem in this community. Therefore, the chemotherapy and the effort to improve the hygiene are necessary in this community by physicians, teachers and health administrators.
