In this paper, the impact of a vernacular pozzolanic kaolinite mine on concrete alkali-silica reaction and strength has been evaluated. For making the samples, kaolinite powder with various levels has been used in the quality specification test of aggregates based on the ASTM C1260 standard in order to investigate the effect of kaolinite particles on reducing the reaction of the mortar bars. The compressive strength, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) experiments have been performed on concrete specimens. The obtained results show that addition of kaolinite powder to concrete will cause a pozzolanic reaction and decrease the permeability of concrete samples comparing to the reference concrete specimen. Further, various machine learning methods have been used to predict ASR-induced expansion per different amounts of kaolinite. In the process of modeling methods, optimal method is considered to have the lowest mean square error (MSE) simultaneous to having the highest correlation coefficient (R). Therefore, to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed model, the results of the support vector machine (SVM) method were compared with the decision tree method, regression analysis and neural network algorithm. The results of comparison of forecasting tools showed that support vector machines have outperformed the results of other methods. Therefore, the support vector machine method can be mentioned as an effective approach to predict ASR-induced expansion.
When the waste solid fuel (SRF, Bio-SRF) is burnt in a boiler, a problem occurs in the combustion process involving the alkali components (Na, K) contained in large amounts in the fuel. The alkaline component has a low melting point, which usually forms low melting point salt in the temperature of the furnace, with the resulting low melting point salts attaching to the heat pipe to form a clinker. Various additives are used to suppress clinker generation, and the additive based on the kaolinite has alkali-aluminum-silica to inhibit the clinker. In this study, the reactivity of the additives based on the kaolinite was compared. The additives utilized were R-kaolinite, B-kaolinite, and A-kaolinite. Also silica and MgO were sourced as the comparison group. The experimental group was employed as a laboratory-scale batch horizontal reactor. The additive and alkaline salts were reacted at a weight ratio of 1 : 1, and the reaction temperature was performed at 900 ℃ for 10 hours. The first measurement of HCl occurring during the experiment was performed 30 minutes after the detection tube was used, and the process was repeated every hour after the experiment. After the reaction, solid residues were photographed for characterization analysis by means of an optical microscope. The reaction characteristics of the kaolinite were confirmed based on the analysis results.
The X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy study of the kaolin sample from Sancheong area show that the halloysite occurs as hydrated 10$\AA$ form. It implies that the 7$\AA$ reflection and hk-line splitting in the X-ray diffractogram are ascribed to kaolinite. Kaolinite in Sancheong kaolin is of a disordered type. It tends to be enriched in the colored part of kaolin samples. Quantitative analyses show that kaolin contains 16-57% halloysite and 10-55%kaolinite.
The mechanisms of Cu2+ adsorption onto goethite, hematite and kaolinite are different. Goethite and hematite showed a similar adsorption behavior (ionic-strength independent), but kaolinite gave somewhat different result (ionic-strength dependent). These experimenal results were successfully simulated using a surface complexation model, TLM, which defines the inner- or outer-sphere complex. The chemical nature of Cu2+ adsorption onto kaolinite was qualitatively identified by EPR spectroscopy.
The characteristics of phosphate adsorption-desorption on kaolinite was studied by batch adsorption experiments and detailed adsorbed state of phosphate on kaolinite surface was investigated using ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy. The phosphorous contents were measured using UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer with 820 nm wavelength. The adsorbed P was generally increased with increasing pH value in the range of pH 4 to pH 9, however it is not distinct. Moreover the adsorbed P was significantly changed with different initial phosphate concentration. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted with the Langmuir equation, Temkin equation, and Freundlich equation in descending order. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of kaolinite KGa-2 is 232.5 ($204.1{\sim}256.5$) mg/kg and has very higher value than that of kaolinite KGa-1b. Most of adsorbed phosphate on kaolinite were not easily desorbed to aqueous solution, but might fixed on kaolinite surface. However it needs further research about the exact desorption experiment. It was impossible to recognize phosphorous adsorption bands on kaolinite in ATR-FTIR spectrum from kaolinite bands themselves, because the absorption peaks of phosphorous have very similar positions with those of kaolinite, and the intensities of the former were very weak in comparison with those of the latter.
Electrochemical properties of Georgia kaolinite in aqueous suspension were studied by ion adsorption, potentiometric titration, and electrophoretic mobility measurements. Kaolinite in 0.001 M and 0.1 M NaCl solution showed qualitatively both pH independent and pH depender negative and positive charges through pH range 2.5-11.0 when dissolved aluminum ions from kaolinite were considered as well as $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ as index ions. Electrophoretic mobilities (EM) of 0.02 wt. % kaolinite suspension in distilled water and 0.001 M NaCl solution were approximately constant against mobility measuring time consumed in the electrophoresis cell at different pH values, and isoelectric points(IEP) were around pH 4.7. EM values in 0.1 M NaCl solution were positive and constant against mobility measuring time below pH 4; but above pH 4, EM values were negative for the first 10 seconds followed by positive values which became approximately constant through stepped changes after 10 minutes. Hydrated cations may bind to the six- member oxygen ring sites having multiple partial negative charges on the exterior tetrahedral layer surface by both electrostatic and hydrogen bonding force while hydrated anions bind to the partially positively charged hydrogen atoms on the exterior octahedral layer surface. Parts of the aluminol groups on the exterior octahedral layer surface as well as edge faces may be involved in complex reactions and have both anion and cation exchange capacities in the electrolyte solution above pH 4.

In this study, feasibility of using hydrogen peroxide as a chemical oxidant for in-situ treatment by EK-Fenton technology were investigated. Kaolinite, kaolinite/sand mixture and illitic soil spiked by phenol and phenanathrene were used and variation of electrochemical characteristics were examined by EK-Fenton test. For kaolinite that having low buffer capacity, hydrogen peroxide was injected effectively from anode reservoir. However illitic soil that having relatively higher buffer capacity had low hydrogen peroxide introducing efficiency. The test results showed that Hydrogen ions generated by current increased during the treatment decreased under pH 3 in the most of kaolinite specimen. Therefore, stabilized hydrogen oxide was injected more effectively in the kaolinite specimen. This study suggests that efficiency of hydrogen peroxide injection by EK-Fenton thechnoloty is dependent of variation of pH in the soil

Kaolinite was synthesized through th acid treatment of mixture which consisted of psudoboehmite and colloidal silica in hydrothermal reaction at $213^{\circ}C$ under autogeneous vapor pressure. Crystallization process was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction pattern, IR spectra and Hinckley index was calculated. The synthesis in acidic solution promotes the dissolution of the starting materials and leads to crystallization of kaolinite. The rate of crystallization to kaolinite and stacking defect were found to e affected by kind of anion, acidity and starting materials.
The high aluminous meta-claystones are thinly bedded to metasedimentary rocks which belong to Chununsan Formation. Major high aluminous minerals in the ores ae andalusite, kaolinite and pyrophyllite. The other significant constituents are sericite, chloritoid and carbonaceous material, etc. Ores can be classified into 4 types according to mineral compositions; andalusite- kolinite-sericite, andalusite-kaolinite-chloritoid, kaolinite-sericite-pyrophyllite, and kaolinite-chloritoid-sericite ore. The formation of ore minerals are resulted from sedimentary, diagenetic, metamorphic and hydrothermal processes. Andalusite are formed by low-grade metamorphism under the conditions of $400~500^{\circ}C$ and below 4kb, from the view-point of mineral stability field, illite-mica crystallinity and graphitization degree of the carbonaceous material. Andalusites are partly altered to kaolinite, forming major mineral phase in the ores.
Strongly weathered granitic rocks are widely distributed in the south-eastern part of the Ganghwa island. Kaolinite developed during intense weathering on this granitic rocks have been studied mineralogically and chemically. Various weathering indexes were ca1culated on the basis of oxide. Those indexes are slightly varied with depth. It shows that the percentages of $Al_2O_3$ increase but that of $CaO+Na_2O+K_2O$ decrease as the weathering progress. These results indicate that day minerals, mainly kaolinite with the appreciable amount of halloysite, were formed by the weathering of feldspars in the granitic rocks. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, infrared spectrometry and electron microscopy were used to characterize and estimate crystallinity of the kaolinite. Generally, Kaolinite shows a less sharp basal reflection and relatively low dehydroxylation temperature, indicating disordered kaolinite. They usually occur aggregates as a vermicular kaolinites showing loose basal plane stacking arrangement.
