  • To overcome main drawbacks of parametric models, k-nearest neighbor resampling (KNNR) is suggested for water quality analysis involving geographic information. However, with KNNR nonparametric model, Geographic information is not properly handled. In the current study, to manipulate geographic information properly, we introduce a depth function which is a novel statistical concept in the classical KNNR model for stormwater quality simulation. An application is presented for a case study of the total suspended solids throughout the entire United States. Total suspended solids concentration data of stormwater demonstrated that the proposed model significantly improves the simulation performance rather than the existing KNNR model.

  • As the infrastructures and populations are the condensed in the mega city, urban flood management becomes very important due to the severe loss of lives and properties. For the more accurate calculation of runoff from the urban catchment, hourly or even minute rainfall data have been utilized. However, the time steps of the measured or forecasted data under climate change scenarios are longer than hourly, which causes the difficulty on the application. In this study, daily rainfall data was disaggregated into hourly using the stochastic method. Based on the historical hourly precipitation data, Gram Schmidt orthonormalization process and K-Nearest Neighbor Resampling (KNNR) method were applied to disaggregate daily precipitation into hourly. This method was originally developed to disaggregate yearly runoff data into monthly. Precipitation data has smaller probability density than runoff data, therefore, rainfall patterns considering the previous and next days were proposed as 7 different types. Disaggregated rainfall was resampled from the only same rainfall patterns to improve applicability. The proposed method was applied rainfall data observed at Seoul weather station where has 52 years hourly rainfall data and the disaggregated hourly data were compared to the measured data. The proposed method might be applied to disaggregate the climate change scenarios.

  • Image resampling is of particular interest in digital radiology. When resampling an image to a new set of coordinate, there appears blocking artifacts and image changes. To enhance image quality, interpolation algorithms have been used. Resampling is used to increase the number of points in an image to improve its appearance for display. The process of interpolation is fitting a continuous function to the discrete points in the digital image. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the seven interpolation functions when image resampling in digital periapical images. The images were obtained by Digora, CDR and scanning of Ektaspeed plus periapical radiograms on the dry skull and human subject. The subjects were exposed to intraoral X-ray machine at 60kVp and 70 kVp with exposure time varying between 0.01 and 0.50 second. To determine which interpolation method would provide the better image, seven functions were compared; (1) nearest neighbor (2) linear (3) non-linear (4) facet model (5) cubic convolution (6) cubic spline (7) gray segment expansion. And resampled images were compared in terms of SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) and MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) coefficient value. The obtained results were as follows ; 1. The highest SNR value(75.96dB) was obtained with cubic convolution method and the lowest SNR value(72.44dB) was obtained with facet model method among seven interpolation methods. 2. There were significant differences of SNR values among CDR, Digora and film scan(P<0.05). 3. There were significant differences of SNR values between 60kVp and 70kVp in seven interpolation methods. There were significant differences of SNR values between facet model method and those of the other methods at 60kVp(P<0.05), but there were not significant differences of SNR values among seven interpolation methods at 70kVp(P>0.05). 4. There were significant differences of MTF coefficient values between linear interpolation method and the other six interpolation methods (P< 0.05). 5. The speed of computation time was the fastest with nearest -neighbor method and the slowest with non-linear method. 6. The better image was obtained with cubic convolution, cubic spline and gray segment method in ROC analysis. 7. The better sharpness of edge was obtained with gray segment expansion method among seven interpolation methods.

  • The emergence of high resolution satellite images and the evolution of spatial resolution facilitate various studies using high resolution satellite images. Above all, target detection algorithms are effective for monitoring of traffic flow and military surveillance and reconnaissance because vehicles, airplanes, and ships on broad area could be detected easily using high resolution satellite images. Recently, many satellites are launched from global countries and the diversity of satellite images are also increased. On the contrary, studies on comparison about the spatial resolution or target detection, especially, are insufficient in domestic and foreign countries. Therefore, in this study, effects of spatial resolution on target detection are analyzed using the PSO target detection algorithm. The resampling techniques such as nearest neighbor, bilinear, and cubic convolution are adopted to resize the original image into 0.5m, 1m, 2m, 4m spatial resolutions. Then, accuracy of target detection is assessed according to not only spatial resolution but also resampling method. As a result of the study, the resolution of 0.5m and nearest neighbor among the resampling methods have the best accuracy. Additionally, it is necessary to satisfy the criteria of 2m and 4m resolution for the detection of airplane and ship, respectively. The detection of airplane need more high spatial resolution than ship because of their complexity of shape. This research suggests the appropriate spatial resolution for the plane and ship target detection and contributes to the criteria of satellite sensor design.

  • Stochastic simulation of hydrologic data has been widely developed for several decades. However, despite the several advances made in literature still a number of limitations and problems remain. In the current study, some stochastic simulation approaches tackling some of the existing problems are discussed. The presented models are based on nonparametric techniques such as block bootstrapping, and K-nearest neighbor resampling (KNNR), and kernel density estimate (KDE). Three different types of the presented stochastic simulation models are (1) Pilot Gamma Kernel estimate with KNNR (a single site case) and (2) Enhanced Nonparametric Disaggregation with Genetic Algorithm (a disaggregation case). We applied these models to one of the most challenging and critical river basins in USA, the Colorado River. These models are embedded into the hydrological software package, Pros and cons of the models compared with existing models are presented through basic statistics and drought and storage-related statistics.

  • Flooding events often result from extreme precipitations driven by various climate mechanisms, which are often disregarded in flood risk assessments. To bridge this gap, we propose a climate-mechanism-based flood frequency analysis that accommodates the direct linkage between the dominant climate processes and risk management decisions. Several statistical methods have been utilized in this approach including the Markov Chain analysis, K-nearest neighbor (KNN) resampling approach, and Z-score-based jittering method. After that, the impacts of climate change are associated with the modification of the transition matrix (TM) and the application of the quantile mapping approach. For this study, we have selected the Nam River Basin, South Korea, to consider the heterogeneous impacts of the two climate mechanisms, including the Tropical Cyclone (TC) and non-TCs. Based on our results, while both climate mechanisms have significant impacts on future flood extremes, TCs have been observed to bring more significant and immediate impacts on the flood extremes. The results in this study have proven that the proposed approach can lead to a new insights into future flooding management.

  • In Seoul, it has been confirmed that the duration of rainfall is shortened and the frequency and intensity of heavy rains are increasing with a changing climate. In addition, due to high population density and urbanization in most areas, floods frequently occur in flood-prone areas for the increase in impermeable areas. Furthermore, the Seoul City is pursuing various projects such as structural and non-structural measures to resolve flood-prone areas. A disaster prevention performance target was set in consideration of the climate change impact of future precipitation, and this study conducted to reduce the overall flood damage in Seoul for the long-term. In this study, 29 GCMs with RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios were used for spatial and temporal disaggregation, and we also considered for 3 research periods, which is short-term (2006-2040, P1), mid-term (2041-2070, P2), and long-term (2071-2100, P3), respectively. For spatial downscaling, daily data of GCM was processed through Quantile Mapping based on the rainfall of the Seoul station managed by the Korea Meteorological Administration and for temporal downscaling, daily data were downscaled to hourly data through k-nearest neighbor resampling and nonparametric temporal detailing techniques using genetic algorithms. Through temporal downscaling, 100 detailed scenarios were calculated for each GCM scenario, and the IDF curve was calculated based on a total of 2,900 detailed scenarios, and by averaging this, the change in the future extreme rainfall was calculated. As a result, it was confirmed that the probability of rainfall for a duration of 100 years and a duration of 1 hour increased by 8 to 16% in the RCP4.5 scenario, and increased by 7 to 26% in the RCP8.5 scenario. Based on the results of this study, the amount of rainfall designed to prepare for future climate change in Seoul was estimated and if can be used to establish purpose-wise water related disaster prevention policies.
