In this paper, we have considered the method for clustering land cover types over the East Asia from AVHRR data. The feature vectors such that maximum NDVI, amplitude of NDVI, mean NDVI, and NDVI threshold are extracted from the 10-day composite by maximum value composite(MVC) for reducing the effect of cloud contaninations. To find the land cover clusters given by the feature vectors, we are adapted the self-organizing feature map(SOFM) clustering which is the mapping of an input vector space of n-dimensions into a one - or two-dimensional grid of output layer. The approach is to find first the clusters by the first layer SOFM and then merge several clusters of the first layer to a large cluster by the second layer SOFM. In experiments, we were used the 8-km AVHRR data for two years(1992-1993) over the East Asia.
The demand for processing large data streams is growing rapidly as the generation and processing of large volumes of data become more popular. A variety of large data processing technologies are being developed to suit the increasing demand. One of the technologies that researchers have particularly observed is the data stream clustering with sliding windows. Data stream clustering with sliding windows may create a new set of clusters whenever the window moves. Previous data stream clustering techniques with sliding windows exploit the coresets, also known as group features that summarize the data. In this paper, we present some reformable elements of a group-feature based algorithm, and propose our algorithm that modified the clustering algorithm of the original one. We conduct a performance comparison between two algorithms by using different parameter values. Finally, we provide some guideline for the selective use of those algorithms with regard to the parameter values and their impacts on the performance.

Clustering is one of the most important unsupervised learning methods that clusters data into homogeneous groups. However, cluster centers tend leaning to high density clusters because clustering is based on the distances between data points and cluster centers. In this paper, a modified clustering method forcing cluster centers to be apart by introducing a center-scattering term in the Fuzzy C-Means objective function is introduced. The proposed method converges more to real centers with small number of iterations compared to the original one. All the strengths can be verified with experimental results.
Most pressurized water reactors use Venturi flow meters to measure the feedwater flow rate. However, fouling phenomena, which allow corrosion products to accumulate and increase the differential pressure across the Venturi flow meter, can result in an overestimation of the flow rate. In this study, a soft-sensing model based on fuzzy support vector regression was developed to enable accurate on-line prediction of the feedwater flow rate. The available data was divided into two groups by fuzzy c means clustering in order to reduce the training time. The data for training the soft-sensing model was selected from each data group with the aid of a subtractive clustering scheme because informative data increases the learning effect. The proposed soft-sensing model was confirmed with the real plant data of Yonggwang Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3. The root mean square error and relative maximum error of the model were quite small. Hence, this model can be used to validate and monitor existing hardware feedwater flow meters.
With the growth in the size of datasets, data mining has recently become an important research topic. Especially, interests about spatio-temporal data mining has been increased which is a method for analyzing massive spatio-temporal data collected from a wide variety of applications like GPS data, trajectory data of surveillance system and earth geographic data. In the former approaches, conventional clustering algorithms are applied as spatio-temporal data mining techniques without any modification. In this paper, we focused to SOM that is the most common clustering algorithm applied to clustering analysis in data mining wet and develop the spatio-temporal data mining module based on it. In addition, we analyzed the clustering results of developed SOM module and compare them with those of K-means and Agglomerative Hierarchical algorithm in the aspects of homogeneity, separation, separation, silhouette width and accuracy. We also developed specialized visualization module fur more accurate interpretation of mining result.
Traditional clustering methods, like k-means or fuzzy clustering, are prototype-based methods which are applicable only to convex clusters. On the other hand, spectral clustering tries to find clusters only using local similarity information. Its ability to handle concave clusters has gained the popularity recent years together with support vector machine (SVM) which is a kernel-based classification method. However, as is in SVM, the kernel width plays an important role and has a great impact on the result. Several methods are proposed to decide it automatically, it is still determined based on heuristics. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive method deciding the kernel width based on distance histogram. The proposed method is motivated by the fact that the affinity matrix should be formed into a block diagonal matrix to generate the best result. We use the tradition Euclidean distance together with the random walk distance, which make it possible to form a more apparent block diagonal affinity matrix. Experimental results show that the proposed method generates more clear block structured affinity matrix than the existing one does.

Normal mixture model(NMM) frequently used to cluster genes on microarray gene expression data. In this paper some of component means of NMM are modelled by a linear regression model so that its design matrix presents the pattern between sample classes in microarray matrix. This modelling for the component means by given design matrices certainly has an advantage that we can lead the clusters that are previously designed. However, it suffers from 'overfitting' problem because in practice genes often are highly dimensional. This problem also arises when the NMM restricted by the linear model for component-means is fitted. To cope with this problem, in this paper, the use of the factor analyzer NMM restricted by linear model is proposed to cluster genes. Also several design matrices which are useful for clustering genes are provided.
This paper proposes remotely sensed image classification method by fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm using average intra-cluster distance. The average intra-cluster distance acquires an average of the vector set belong to each cluster and proportionates to its size and density. We perform classification according to pixel's membership grade by cluster center of fuzzy c-means clustering using the mean-values of training data about each class. Fuzzy c-means algorithm considered membership degree for inter-cluster of each class. And then, we validate degree of overlap between clusters. A pixel which has a high degree of overlap applies to the maximum likelihood classification method. Finally, we decide category by comparing with fuzzy membership degree and likelihood rate. The proposed method is applied to IKONOS remote sensing satellite image for the verifying test.

Aggressive driving is a major cause of car accidents. Previous studies have mainly analyzed young driver's aggressive driving tendency, yet they were only done through pure clustering or classification technique of machine learning. However, since elderly people have different driving habits due to their fragile physical conditions, it is necessary to develop a new method such as enhancing the characteristics of driving data to properly analyze aggressive driving of elderly drivers. In this study, acceleration data collected from a smartphone of a driving vehicle is analyzed by a newly proposed ECA(Enhanced Clustering method for Acceleration data) technique, coupled with a conventional clustering technique (K-means Clustering, Expectation-maximization algorithm). ECA selects high-intensity data among the data of the cluster group detected through K-means and EM in all of the subjects' data and models the characteristic data through the scaled value. Using this method, the aggressive driving data of all youth and elderly experiment participants were collected, unlike the pure clustering method. We further found that the K-means clustering has higher detection efficiency than EM method. Also, the results of K-means clustering demonstrate that a young driver has a driving strength 1.29 times higher than that of an elderly driver. In conclusion, the proposed method of our research is able to detect aggressive driving maneuvers from data of the elderly having low operating intensity. The proposed method is able to construct a customized safe driving system for the elderly driver. In the future, it will be possible to detect abnormal driving conditions and to use the collected data for early warning to drivers.

This research deals with an issue of preventive medicine in bioinformatics. We can diagnose liver conditions reasonably well to prevent Liver Cirrhosis by classifying liver disorder patients into fatty liver and high risk groups. The classification proceeds in two steps. Classification rules are first built by clustering five attributes (MCV, ALP, ALT, ASP, and GGT) of blood test dataset provided by the UCI Repository. The clusters can be formed by the K-mean method that analyzes multi dimensional attributes. We analyze the properties of each cluster divided into fatty liver, high risk and normal classes. The classification rules are generated by the analysis. In this paper, we suggest a method to diagnosis and predict liver condition to alcoholic patient according to risk levels using the classification rule from the new results of blood test. The K-mean classifier has been found to be more accurate for the result of blood test and provides the risk of fatty liver to normal liver conditions.
