X-ray quality is identified numerically by half value layer(H.V.L) and the HVL is affected by the kVp and the amount of filtration in the useful beam. X-ray quality evaluated by H.L.D is influenced by kVp and filtration. Author had several experiments with phantom in diameter of 8 cm normal adult chest, for reduction of radiation dose of the patients in diagnostic radiology and got some results. 1. H.V.L is increased the thicker the filter and the higher the kVp. 2. If the kVp is increased from 60 to 120, the skin dose can be reduced as 34%(Skin dose of 60 kVp with 4 mmAl filter : 100%). 3. If the 4 mmAl filter with 60 kVp is added to x-ray tube, skin dose can be reduced as 23% than no filter. 4. Therefore high kVp and filtration can increase output to input dose ratio and 120 kVp and 4 mmAl filter were most effective for reduction of patient dose in chest radiography.
When a patient was irradiated with prosthetic hip, the dose distribution was changed according to inhomogeneous materials. The density, effective atomic number, and the composition of material had influence on absorbed dose distribution. In this study, the influence of inhomogeneous material(Ti) was measured using a polyethylene phantom, which consisted of various diameter of titanium, with film dosimetry. As a result, the backward dose showed 29.5% increas by backscattering, the forward dose showed 28% decreas by absorption, and the side dose showed 7% increas by scattering, when 25 mm diameter Ti was used. In addition forward dose was in inverse proportion to the thickness of prosthetic material. When the prosthetic hip of patient is in an irradiated field, we must carefully study the absorbed dose distribution.
This study examines how much the radiation dose rate around it varies if a crack occurs on the spent nuclear fuel rod. The spent nuclear fuel rod to be examined is that of Kori unit 3&4. The source terms are evaluated using the ORIGEN-ARP that is part of the version 5.1 of the SCALE package. The radiation dose rate is assessed using the TORT. To check if the structure of a fuel rod is appropriately modeled in the TORT calculation, the calculation results by the TORT are compared with those by the ANISN for the same case. From the code simulation, it is known that if a crack occurs on the spent nuclear fuel rod, the neutron dose rate varies depending on what material is the crack filled with, but the gamma dose rate varies irrespective of type of the material that the crack is filled with.
The purpose of this study was to estimate and analyze the potential radiation dose that the future visitors and the cleaning staff will be exposed to when the KRR-1 reactor is converted into a memorial hall. The radiation doses were estimated using the RESRAD-BUILD software, where case, building, receptor, shielding, and source parameters were applied as the input data. Also, the basic data for the assessment of the radiation doses were determined in an indirect manner using the data on the waste generated during the decommissioning process of the reactor. The assessment results indicate that the potential radiation dose to the visitors and the cleaning staff will be less than 1 mSv, the annual dose limit for the general public. However, if anyone for a significant period of time is close to the reactor, the overall dose will increase. The radiation dose for the future visitors and the cleaning staff was determined to be lower than the annual dose limit for the general public. Given such a risk, systematic measures, such as periodic monitoring or limiting hours, are imperative.
Radiation protection in the scrotum to reduce the risk of genetic effect in the future is very important. This study aimed to measure the scrotal dose outside the treatment fields by using the radio-photoluminescence glass dosimeter (RPLGD). The characteristics of RPLGD model GD-302M were studied. Scattered dose to scrotum was measured in one liposarcoma case with the prescribed dose of 60 Gy. RPLGDs were placed in three different locations: one RPLGD was positioned at the posterior area which closer to the scrotum, and the other two RPLGDs were placed between the penis and the scrotum. Three RPLGDs were employed in each location. The scattered doses were measured in every fraction during the whole course of treatment. The entire number of 100 RPLGDs showed the uniformity within ±2%. The signal from RPLGD demonstrated linear proportion to the radiation dose (r = 0.999). The relative energy response correction factor was 1.05. The average scrotal dose was 4.1 ± 0.9 cGy per fraction. The results presented a wide range since there was a high uncertainty during RPLGD placement. The total scrotal dose for the whole course of treatment was 101.9 cGy (1.7% of the prescribed dose). The RPLGD model GD-302M could be used to measure scattered dose after applying the relative energy correction factor.
Studies of oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin in pretreated metastatic colorectal cancer showed that oxaliplatin dose intensity is important prognostic factor for objective response rates and progression-free-survival (PFS). To evaluate response rates, PFS and toxicity according to oxaliplatin dose intensity, we retrospectively analyzed data from patients with metastatic colorectal cancer received oxaliplatin,5-fluorouracil, leucovorin regimens. Sixty-three patients were reviewed in this study, 42 patients received low dose intensity oxaliplatin (LDI: $\leq85\;mg/m^2/2wks$) and 21 patients high dose intensity oxaliplatin (HDI: $>85\;mg/m^2/2wks$). Objective responses occurred in 10 $(47.7\%)$ HDI patients and 9 $(21.4\%)$ LDI patients (p = 0.014). Median PFS was 24.7 weeks in HDI group, with $45.1\%$ of HDI patients progression free at 6 months, and 20.5 weeks in LDI group, with $33.5\%$ of LDI patients progression free at 6 months (p = 0.344). Increased oxaliplatin dose intensity was not associated with neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, neuropathy, nausea and vomiting. This study showed that oxaliplatin dose intensification significantly improves objective response rate in pretreated metastatic colorectal cancer without increasing severe toxicity.
Purpose: The current study investigates the feasibility of a platform for a nationwide dose monitoring system for dental radiography. The essential elements for an unerring system are also assessed. Materials and Methods: An intraoral radiographic machine with 14 X-ray generators and five sensors, 45 panoramic radiographic machines, and 23 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) models used in Korean dental clinics were surveyed to investigate the type of dose report. A main server for storing the dose data from each radiographic machine was prepared. The dose report transfer pathways from the radiographic machine to the main sever were constructed. An effective dose calculation method was created based on the machine specifications and the exposure parameters of three intraoral radiographic machines, five panoramic radiographic machines, and four CBCTs. A viewing system was developed for both dentists and patients to view the calculated effective dose. Each procedure and the main server were integrated into one system. Results: The dose data from each type of radiographic machine was successfully transferred to the main server and converted into an effective dose. The effective dose stored in the main server is automatically connected to a viewing program for dentist and patient access. Conclusion: A patient radiation dose monitoring system is feasible for dental clinics. Future research in cooperation with clinicians, industry, and radiologists is needed to ensure format convertibility for an efficient dose monitoring system to monitor unexpected radiation dose.
An accurate measurement of dose distribution is indispensable to perform radiation therapy planning. A measurement technique using a radiographic film, which is called a film dosimetry, is widely used because it is easy to obtain a dose distribution with a good special resolution. In this study, we tried to develop an analyzing system for the film dosimetry using usual office automation equipments such as a personal computer and an image scanner. A film was sandwiched between two solid water phantom blocks (30 ${\times}$ 30 ${\times}$ 15cm). The film was exposed with Cobalt-60 ${\gamma}$-ray whose beam axis was parallel to the film surface. The density distribution on the exposed film was stored in a personal computer through an image scanner (8bits) and the film density was shown as the digital value with NIH-image software. Isodose curves were obtained from the relationship between the digital value and the absorbed dose calculated from percentage depth dose and absorbed dose at the reference point. The isodose curves were also obtained using an Isodose plotter, for reference. The measurements were carried out for 31cGy (exposure time: 120seconds) and 80cGy (exposure time: 300seconds) at the reference point. While the isodose curves obtained with our system were drawn up to 60% dose range for the case of 80cGy, the isodose curves could be drawn up to 80% dose range for the case of 31cGy. Furthermore, the isodose curves almost agreed with that obtained with the isodose plotter in low dose range. However, further improvement of our system is necessary in high dose range.
