  • This paper described a numerical investigation performed to understand better the effects of flow parameters in an entrained flow combustor on the flow characteristics. The computational model was based on the gas phase Eulerian equations of mass, momentum and energy. The code was formulated with RNG $k-\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow. The calculation parameters were the ratio of primary and secondary jet velocity and the height difference between primary and secondary jet As the secondary jet velocity increased, the upper recirculation 3one of the primary jet was strengthened. It was found that as the primary jet velocity increased, there was a critical jet Velocity at which the size of upper and lower recirculation zone was reversed.

  • The paper reports the outcome of a numerical study of flow over idealized L-shaped ribleted surfaces with two-equation turbulence models. In the present study, the Launder and Sharma's k-.epsilon. turbulence model (LS model) is basically N employed, but with a little modification of the additional .epsilon.-source term without affecting its level under 2-dimensional straining in which the term has been calibrated. Compared to the original LS model, the present model has predicted greatly improved drag reduction behavior for this geometry. As a drag reduction mechanism, it is found that the skin-friction in the riblet valleys might be sufficient to overcome the skin-friction increase near the riblet tip. The present predicted results are in good agreement with the recent DN S ones by Choi et al. (1993): differences in the mean velocity prof ile and turbulence quantities are found to be limited to the riblet cavity region. It is also found that turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress above the riblets are also reduced in drag-reducing configurations.

  • The movements of small particles distributed uniformly in a steady flow in rectangular chambers having inlets and outlets were simulated numerically. Low Reynolds number turbulent model with a two-equation ($k-{\varepsilon}$) which describes the turbulent characteristics was applied to predict the air flow pattern and particles movements under the condition of the various locations and size of ducts. The calculation results show that the prediction of recirculation zone and stagnation point of flow is important to determine the particles behavior according to the design change. These results will be useful in designing the rectangular chambers for collective protection.

  • This article presents an application of a large-scale structural mixing model (Broadwell et al. 1984) to the blowout of turbulent reacting jets discharging perpendicularly into an unconfined cross air-flow. In an analysis of a common stability curve, a plausible explanation can be made that the phenomenon of blowout is related only to the mixing time scale of the two flows. The most notable observation is that the blowout distance is traced at fixed positions at all times according to the velocity ratio R. Measurements of the lower blowout limits in the liftable flame agree qualitatively with the blowout parameter ${\varepsilon}$, proposed by Broadwell et al. Good agreement between the results calculated by a modified blowout parameter ${\varepsilon}^'$ and experimental results confirms the important effect of a large-scale structure in specifying the stabilization feature of blowouts.

  • The wind-flow characteristics over a two-dimensional triangular prism with a porous windbreak are numerically investigated. The geometry is a simplified model of large outdoor stack with a frontal wall-type windbreak which is used to prevent particle dispersion by reducing wind speed over stak surface. In the present numerical model, the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model, the orthogonal grid system and the QUICK scheme are employed for the successful simulation of separated flow. The predicted results are compared and validated with the associated wind-tunnel experiments. In addition, the trajectories of dispersed particles and their sedimentation characteristics are quantitatively investingated using a Lagrangian turbulent-dispersion model.

  • Unsteady 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver is used to simulate the turbulent flow past an isolated prismatic cylinder at Re=37,400. The aspect ratio of height to base width of the body is 5. The turbulence closure is achieved through a non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The applicability of this model to predict unsteady forces associated with this flow is examined. The study shows that the present URANS solver with standard wall functions predicts all the major unsteady phenomena showing closer agreement with experiment. This investigation concludes that URANS simulations with the non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure provides a promising alternative to LES with view to study flows having complex features.

  • The characteristics of unsteady heat transfer and boundary layer flow in the SSME turbine rotor passage are investigated with LRN $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The unsteady flow and heat transfer in a rotor blade passage as a result of wake/blade interaction is modeled by the inviscid/boundary-layer flow approach. The relevant governing equations are discretized to a system of finite different equations by means of a BTBCS implicit method. These equations have been solved numerically, for the velocity and temperature fields using TDMA method. Heat flux on the blade surface and flow parameters in the rotor passage are calculated with wake interaction. Numerical results show that velocity, pressure, turbulent kinetic energy and heat flux on the blade surface are varied periodically by wake passing.

  • The coupled turbulent flow and solidification is considered in a typical slab continuous easting process using commercial program FIDAP. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is modified to decay turbulent viscosity in the mushy zone and laminar viscosity is set to a sufficiently large value at the solid region. This coupled turbulent flow and solidification model also contains thermal contact resistance due to the mold powder and air gap between the strand and mold using an effective thermal conductivity. From the computed flow pattern, the trajectory of inclusion particles was calculated. The comparison between the predicted and experimental solidified shell thickness shows a good agreement.

  • An improvement to the k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is presented and is shown to lead to better agreement with data regarding supersonic base flows. The improvement was achieved by imposing a grid-independent realizability constraint in the Launder-Sharma k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The effects of compressibility were also examined. The numerical results show that the modified Launder-Sharma model leads to some improvement in the prediction of the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy profiles. Compressibility corrections also lead to better agreement in both the turbulent kinetic energy and the Reynolds stress profiles with the experimental data.
