  • This study investigated the patterns of coda deletion in spontaneous Seoul Korean speech. More specifically, the current study focused on three factors in promoting coda deletion, namely, word position, consonant type, and morpheme type. The results revealed that, first, coda deletion frequently occurred when affixes were attached to the ends of words, rather than in affixes in word-internal positions or in roots. Second, alveolar consonants [n] and [l] in the coda positions of high-frequency affixes [nɨn] and [lɨl] were most likely to be deleted. Additionally, regarding affix reduction in the word-final position, all subjects seemed to depend on this articulatory strategy to a similar degree. In sum, the current study found that affixes without primary semantic content in spontaneous speech tend to undergo the process of reduction, favoring the occurrence of specific pronunciation variants.

  • Rescaled Simulated Annealing (RSA) has been adapted to solve combinatorial optimization problems in which the available computational resources are limited. Simulated Annealing (SA) is one of the most popular combinatorial optimization algorithms because of its convenience of use and because of the good asymptotic results of convergence to optimal solutions. However, SA is too slow to converge in many problems. RSA was introduced by extending the Metropolis procedure in SA. The extension rescales the state's energy candidate for a transition before applying the Metropolis criterion. The rescaling process accelerates convergence to the optimal solutions by reducing transitions from high energy local minima. In this paper, structural optimization examples using RSA are provided. Truss structures of which design variables are discrete or continuous are optimized with stress and displacement constraints. The optimization results by RSA are compared with the results from classical SA. The comparison shows that the numbers of optimization iterations can be effectively reduced using RSA.

  • In this study, we propose a software-defined radio-based frequency interference emulator in the space-time domain. This emulator can easily model actual interference environments because of the versatile programming capability of the universal software radio peripheral and LabVIEW. As an example of an interfering network using the contention-based multiple access scheme in the time domain, we emulate a coordinated Wi-Fi network that consists of one access point and two Wi-Fi nodes. Results show that our emulator can successfully model multiple interfering signals in the Wi-Fi network and easily adjust various space-time domain parameters.

  • This paper proposes a fault diagnosis system for an induction motor. This system uses empirical mode decomposition(EMD) to extract fault signatures and multi-layer perceptron(MLP) neural network to facilitate an accurate fault diagnosis. EMD can not only decompose a signal adaptively but also provide intrinsic mode functions(IMFs) containing natural oscillatory modes of the signal. However, every IMF does not represent fault signature, an IMF selection algorithm based on harmonics and their energy of each IMF is proposed. The selected IMFs are utilized for fault classification using MLP and this system shows approximately 98 % diagnosis accuracy for the fault vibration signal of the induction motor.

  • Currently, high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) is increasingly used in various muscle disorders like muscle tension. Our proposed study includes the development of the real-time monitoring system using a myotonometer for HILT. The developed system consists of a piezoelectric sensor and laser distance sensor for muscle stiffness monitoring during the treatments. The results demonstrated that the level of muscle tension was rapidly decreased after 3 minutes of the high-intensity laser treatment when compared to the control group. The combined HILT and realtime muscle tension monitoring system may help to evaluate the therapeutic procedure and efficient treatments for various muscle pains.

  • The current study examined speech rate and its variance in spontaneous Seoul Korean speech. The current study focused on factors affecting the variance of speech rate such as utterance length, individual speakers, and gender. The results revealed that, first, utterance length has a significant influence on speech rate. Longer utterances were spoken at a faster rate. Second, regarding the effect of utterance length, individual speakers differed significantly in their speaking rate. The variation between speakers and within speakers tended to increase as utterance length increases. Third, there were speakers' gender differences, indicating that males produced considerably faster speaking rate than females. Additionally, the current study implied that non-linguistic factors in spontaneous speech can affect the variance of speakers' speaking rate.

  • This paper analyzed the extension effects of fatigue life and the application of pre-indentation in aircraft structural material such as aluminum alloys. The test specimen used the thin sheet of aluminum alloy with a single-edged notch. The experiments were conducted after making the pre-crack under a constant amplitude loading. As the fatigue life extension technique, the pre-indentation making an indent on the predicted path of crack propagation was applied. The work presented here discussed about a proper mathematical relation between crack growth rate and the range of stress intensity factor and about the generalization of crack growth mechanism with large retardation effect. A technique to enhance the applicability of pre-indentation if also mentioned.

  • This study examined the deletion of onset consonant in the word-internal structure in spontaneous Seoul Korean speech. It used the dataset of speakers in their 20s extracted from the Korean Corpus of Spontaneous Speech (Yun et al., 2015). The proportion of deletion of word-internal onset consonants was analyzed using the linear mixed-effects regression model. The factors that promoted the deletion of onsets were primarily the types of consonants and their phonetic contexts. The results showed that onset deletion was more likely to occur for a lenis velar stop [k] than the other consonants, and in the phonetic contexts, when the preceding vowel was a low central vowel [a]. Moreover, some speakers tended to more frequently delete onset consonants (e.g., [k] and [n]) than other speakers, which reflected individual differences. This study implies that word-internal onsets undergo a process of gradient reduction within individuals' articulatory strategies.

  • Anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type I protease (PR) and anti-lipid peroxidation effects on Rosa davurica were investigated. Of the various parts tested from R. davurica, the water extracts of stem and leaves inhibited the HIV-1 PR activity by more than 45% at a concentration of $100\;{mu}g/mL$. Hyperoside from the percarp of title plant showed 25% inhibition on HIV-1 PR at $200\;{mu}M$. The methanol extract of the root of R. davurica reduced the level of lipid peroxides induced by bromobenzene in vivo.
