  • In this work, we have developed a systematic way of utilizing the basic design tools for superconductive electronics. This include WRSPICE, XIC, margin program, and L-meter. Since the high performance analog-to- digital converter can be built with Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic circuits the development of superconductive analog-to-digital converter has attracted a lot of interests as one of the most prospective area of the application of Josephson Junction technology. One of the main advantages in using Rapid Single Flux Quantum logic in the analog-to-digital converter is the low voltage output from the Josephson junction switching, and hence the high resolution. To design an 1-bit analog-digital converter, first we have used XIC tool to compose a circuit schematic, and then studied the operational principle of the circuit with WRSPICE tool. Through this process, we obtained the proper circuit diagram of an 1-bit analog-digital converter circuit. Based on this circuit we performed margin calculations of the designed circuits and optimized circuit parameters. The optimized circuit was laid out as a mask drawing. Inductance values of the circuit layout were calculated with L-meter. Circuit inductors were adjusted according to these calculations and the final layout was obtained.

  • YBCO step-edge Josephson junction were fabricated on sapphire substrates. The steps were formed on R-plane sapphire substrates by using Ar ion milling with PR masks. The step angle was controlled in the wide range from 25$^{\circ}$ to 50$^{\circ}$ by adjusting both the Ar ion incident angle and the photoresist mask rotation angle relative to the incident Ar ion beam. CeO$_2$ buffer layer and in-situ YBa$_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) thin films was deposited on the stepped R-plane sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition method. The YBCO film thickness was varied to obtain the ratio of film thickness to step height in the range from 0.5 to 1. The step edge junction exhibited RSJ-like behaviors with I$_cR_n$ product of 100 ${\sim}$ 300 ${\mu}$V, critical current density of 10$^3$ ${\sim}$ 10$^5$ A/ cm$^2$ at 77 K.

  • Two methods have been investigated to fabricate good quality step-edge Josephson junctions on STO, MgO, and LAO single crystal substrates. One is the annealing of substrates at 1050$^{\circ}$C in 1 atmospheric oxygen after Ar-ion milling. The other is the cleaning of step-edge by using Ar ion milling. The step-edge is characterized with atomic force microscope (AFM) images. And YBCO thin films are deposited by using pulsed laser. The I-V properties of step-edge junctions are characterized. The yield rate of step-edge junction is increased by new fabrication methods.

  • Step-edge Josephson junctions (SEJ) have been fabricated on sapphire substrates with in situ deposited films of CeO$_2$ buffer layer and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ films on the low angle steps. Direct coupled SQUID magnetometers with the SEJ were formed on 1 cm X 1 cm R-plane sapphire substrates. Typical 5-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-wide Josephson junctions have R$_{N}$ of 3 Ω and I$_{c}$ of 50 $mutextrm{A}$ at 77 K. The direct coupled SQUID magnetometers were designed to have pickup coils of 50-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-wide 16 parallel loops on the 1 cm X 1 cm substrates with outer dimension of 8.8 mm X 8.8 mm. The SEJ SQUID magnetometers exhibit relatively low 1/f noise even with dc bias control, and could be stably controlled by flux-locked loops in the magnetically disturbed environment. Field noise of the do SQUID was measured to be 200∼300 fT/Hz$^{1}$2/in the white noise region and about 2 pT/Hz$^{1}$2/ at 1 Hz when measured with dc bias method.hod.d.

  • We fabricated superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) based on Nb Josephson junctions, and characterized the key parameters of the SQUIDs. The SQUIDs are double relaxation oscillation SQUIDs (DROSs) having larger flux-to-voltage transfer coefficient than the standard DC-SQUIDs. SQUID sensors were fabricated by using Nb junction technology consisted of a DC magnetron sputtering and a conventional photolithography process. In multichannel SQUID systems for whole-head magnetoencephalography measurement with a helmet-type SQUID array, we need about 336 SQUID sensors for each system. In this paper, we fabricated a few hundred SQUID sensors, measured the critical current, flux modulation voltage and decided if each tested SQUID can be used for the multichannel systems. As the criterion for the acceptance of the sensors, we chose the critical current and amplitude of the modulation voltage to be 8 ㎂ and 80 ㎶, respectively. The average critical current of the SQUIDs was 10.58 ㎂. The typical flux noise of the SQUIDs with input coil shorted was 2 μΦ0/√Hz at white region.

  • We fabricated ramp-edge Josephson junctions with barriers formed by interface treatments instead of epitaxially grown barrier layers. Low-dielectric Sr$_2AITaO_6$(SAT) layer was used as an ion-milling mask as well as an insulating layer for the ramp-edge junctions. An ion-milled YBa$_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO)-edge surface was not exposed to solvent through all fabrication procedures. The barriers were produced by structural modification at the bottom YBCO edge using plasma treatment prior to deposition of the top YBCO electrode. We investigated the effects of pre-annealing and post-annealing on the characteristics of the interface-treated Josephson junctions. The junction parameters were improved by using in-situ RF plasma cleaning treatment.

  • Superconducting junctions of topological insulator (TI) are expected to host Majorana bound state, which is essential for developing topological quantum information devices. In this study, we fabricated Josephson junctions (JJs) made of Sb-doped Bi2Se3 TI nanoribbon and PbIn superconducting electrodes. In the normal state, the axial magnetoresistance data exhibit periodic oscillations, so-called Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, due to a metallic surface state of TI nanoribbon. At low temperature of 1.5 K, the TI JJ reveals the superconducting proximity effects, such as the critical current and multiple Andreev reflections. Under the application of microwave, integer Shapiro steps are observed with satisfying the ac Josephson relation. Our observations indicate that highly-transparent superconducting contacts are formed at the interface between TI nanoribbon and conventional superconductor, which would be useful to explore Majorana bound state in TI.

  • Single Josephson junctions of 50 $\mu$m $\times$ 50 $\mu$m were fabricated for several oxidation conditions to investigate controllabilities of critical current density ($J_{c}$) with the standard KRISS processes. Considering the self-field effect suppressing the observed critical current ($I_{c}$) at high $J_{c}$ region, we could reasonably estimate $J_{c}$ values from I-V observations. The dependence of the estimated $J_{c}$ as a function of exposure, which is equal to pressure(P) times time(t), was well fitted to a curve of $J_{c}$ ~ $(Pt)^{-0.36}$. The maximum $J_{c}$ value at the controllability margin was found to be 4 kA/$cm^{2}$ with the current equipment set up.
