  • The purpose of this study was to investigate any changes in acoustic qualities of voice as ,a function of nasalance, in order to determine the relationship between vocal quality and nasalance. Twenty normal subjects (10 males and 10 females) vocalized /a/, /$\tilde{a}$/, and /a $\eta$/. The changes in nasalance and acoustic characteristics of the voice were analyzed by Nasometer (Model 6200-3, Kay Elemetrics, co) and Dr, Speech 4.0 (Tiger Electronics, Co), respectively. One-way ANOVA was used to examine any changes in jitter, shimmer, harmonics-to-noise ratio, and normalized noise energy relative to the nasalance in 3 types of vocalization. The Person r correlation coefficient was used to identify the relationship between the nasalance and the vocal quality. There was no statistically significant changes in jitter, shimmer, HNR and NNE. The jitter, however, tended to increase as the nasalance socre increased, compared to the other vocal parameters. In addition, the NNE showed an increase on / $\tilde{a}$/, and /a $\eta$/, more on the /a $\eta$/. Thus, it was speculated that NNE could be used to identify or screen resonant disorders with hypernasality

  • This study investigates the voice quality including F0, jitter, shimmer, and NHR for the children with cochlear implant (CI group) and those with normal hearing (NH group). The CI group was further classified two sub-groups depending upon the time of surgery (i.e. under four years vs. over four years). Three corner vowels (e.g. /a/, /i/, /u/) with extended vocalization were used and analyzed with Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (Kay Elemetrics, Model 4300). The statistics were made in two independent sample t-test with SPSS 11.5. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) The children with cochlear implanted before 4 years of age had very similar data with the NH group except for the vowel /a/. (2) The children with cochlear implanted after 4 years of age, however, indicated significant differences in Fo (/a/, /i/, /u/), Jitter (/e/), shimmer (/a/, /i/, /u/) and NHR(/a/) in all three vowels. It is concluded that the early CI surgery and the early intervention would be very important to maintain better voice quality.

  • This study aimed to establish characteristics related to voice and speech through the natural base frequency analysis of esophagus vocalization. In the study, 8 subjects were selected for esophagus vocals, and 10 other subjects were selected for a control group. MDVP(Multi-dimensional Voice Program, Model 4800, USA, 2001), Multi Speech(Model 3700, Kaypantax, USA, 2008) were used as experiment equipment. The speech samples selected for evaluation were vowels and sentences (both declarative and interrogative). For acoustic analysis, the intonation form of fo, jitter, energy, shimmer, HNR, and intonation patterns of the speech sample were measured. The results were as follows: First, the natural intrinsic frequency of extended vowels in the esophagus vocal group was lower than the frequency in the normal vocal group. In particular, the intrinsic frequency difference for high vowel /i/ was much greater than the frequency difference for low vowel /a/. Second, the jitter values of the esophagus vocal group were higher than the control group. In particular, there was a large difference between the jitter values for /a/ and /i/, with the jitter values being highest for /i/. Third, there was no significant difference in vocal strength between the esophagus vocal patient group and the control group. Fourth, the shimmer values of the voices in the esophagus vocal group were higher than shimmer values in the control group. In particular, there was a large difference in shimmer values for low vowel /a/. Fifth, the HNR values of the esophagus vocal group were showed significantly lower than the control group. In particular, the largest difference in HNR values between the two groups was for high vowel /i/. Sixth, the pitch contours of interrogative and declarative sentences of the esophagus vocal patient group showed a different form or only had with small differences compared to the pitch contours of the normal vocal group, thus presenting an inconsistent pattern.

  • Zoning technology of disk improved the performance of disk subsystem with increase of storage capacity and average transfer bandwidth. SCAN disk scheduling with double buffering is used to utilize the performance of zoned disk in multimedia system. However, this method has a problem that generates jitter when the number of steams increases. In this article, we propose the novel approach, pre-buffering policy, to overcome this problem. Pre-buffering avoids jitter by buffering the lack of data before starting service, which is estimated from the current cycle length and the maximum cycle length. We can calculate cycle length, data sire needed in each cycle and the possible lack of data caused by the increase of the number of streams using the numerical model of disk subsystem. Pre-buffering can be applied for multimedia systems and contribute to provide clients with high quality service without jitter.

  • The aim of the test is to provide an experimental basis to validate the prediction of the FEM for high frequency jitter analysis due to reaction wheel. The principle is to measure structural transfer functions between the input disturbances at RWA base plate and the accelerations near the end tips of payload, in a configuration close to the operational model. The spacecraft shall have to be suspended, in order to be representative of on-orbit boundary conditions. The results of the test shall be compared to the output of the FEM analysis, and if needed, local upgrades of the FEM and/or margin policy shall be defined in order to guarantee a good test/FEM consistency. Test results were compared with the transfer functions of the FEM, which is globally tuned based on the results of vibration test and consequently have lower damping coefficients values than 1% in the frequency range of 60~200Hz. The damping coefficients estimated from the figures of FRF test results are different from the theoretical FEM, but the magnitude trend of FRF of the test results is somewhat similar with the analytical, it is expected that the overall jitter effect of final estimation is nearly same with the preliminary analysis result in which the damping coefficients were assumed to be 1% for all modes in FEM.

  • In this article, we present the novel approach of avoiding temporal insufficiency of data blocks, jitter, which occurs due to the commencement of new session. We propose to make the sufficient amount of data blocks available on memory such that the ongoing session can survive the cycle extension. This technique is called ″pre-buffering″. We examine two different approaches in pre-buffering: (i) loads all required data blocks prior to starting playback and (ii) incrementally accumulates the data blocks in each cycle. We develop an elaborate model to determine the appropriate amount of data blocks necessary to survive the cycle extension and to compute startup latency involved in loading these data blocks. The simulation result shows that limiting the disk bandwidth utilization to 60% can greatly improve the startup latency as well as the buffer requirement for individual streams.

  • Number of components and payload systems installed in satellites were found to be exposed to various disturbance sources such as the reaction wheel assembly, the control moment gyro, coolers, and others. A micro-level of vibration can introduce jitter problems into an optical payload system and cause significant degradation of the image quality. Moreover, the prediction of on-orbit vibration effects on the performance of optical payloads during the development process is always important. However, analyzing interactions between subsystems and predicting the vibration level of the payloads is extremely difficult. Therefore, this paper describes the analytical and experimental approach to microvibration effects on satellite optical payload performance with integrated jitter analysis framework, micro vibration emulator and satellite structure testbed.

  • The video transmission for real-time viewing over the Internet is a core operation for the multimedia services. However, its realization is very difficult because the Internet has two major problems, namely, very narrow endpoint-bandwidth and the network jitter. We already proposed a scalable video transmission method in [8] which used MPEG-4 video VM(Verification Model) 2.0[3] for very low bit rate coding and an adaptive temporal rate control of video objects to overcome the network jitter problem. In this paper, we present the improved adaptive temporal rate control scheme for the scalable transmission. Experimental results for three test video sequences show that the adaptive temporal rate control can transfer the video bitstream at source frame rate under variable network condition.

  • In this paper we suggest multimedia synchronization model that is based on the Petri-net and services desirable quality of service requirement. Proposed model applies variable buffer which can be allowed, and then it presents high quality of service and real time characteristics. This paper decreases the data loss resulted from variation of delay time and from loss time of media-data by means of applying delay jitter in order to deal with synchronization interval adjustment. Plus, the mechanism adaptively manages the waiting time of smoothing buffer, which leads to minimize the gap from the variation of delay time. The proposed paper is suitable to the system which requires the guarantee of high quality of service and mechanism improves quality of services such as decrease of loss rate, increase of playout rate.
