The side jet effects between jet flow and free-stream on a missile body were investigated by experimentally and numerically for modeling aerodynamic coefficients in pitch plane. K-factors for normal force and pitching moment were introduced to estimate the side jet effects. The main parameters of the jet interaction phenomena were angle of attack, jet pressure ratio, Mach number and jet bank angle. The K-factors for normal force coefficient and pitching moment coefficients in pitch plane were analysed.
This paper describes an experimental work to investigate the effect of mesh screen device on the jet structure and acoustic characteristics of over-expanded supersonic jet. The mesh screen device is placed into the supersonic jet stream. In order to perturb mainly the initial jet shear layer, the hole is perforated in the central part of the mesh screen. The diameter of the perforated hole and the location of mesh screen device are varied. A Schlieren optical system is used to visualize the flow fields of supersonic jet without and with the mesh screen device. Pitot pressure measurement is carried out to obtain the pressure distribution in the jet flow. Acoustic measurement also is performed to obtain the OASPL and noise spectra. The results obtained show that the jet structure and the jet noise control effectiveness is strongly dependent upon the diameter of the perforated hole and the location of the mesh screen device in the jet stream. Provided that the mesh screen device is placed at the location to perturb effectively the initial shear layer, the present control method is effective in suppressing the supersonic jet noise.

Wall jet flow exists widely in engineering applications, including the simulation of thunderstorm downburst outflows, and has been investigated extensively by both experimental and numerical methods. Most previous studies focused on the scaling laws and self-similarity, while the effect of lip thickness and external stream height on mean velocity has not been examined in detail. The present work is a numerical study, using steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations at a Reynolds number of $3.5{\times}10^4$, of a turbulent plane wall jet with an external stream to investigate the influence of the wall jet domain on downstream development of the flow. The comparisons of flow characteristics simulated by the Reynolds stress turbulence model closure (Stress-omega, SWRSM) and experimental results indicate that this model may be considered reasonable for simulating the wall jet. The confined wall jet is further analyzed in a parametric study, with the results compared to the experimental data. The results indicate that the height and the width of the wind tunnel and the lip thickness of the jet nozzle have a great effect on the wall jet development. The top plate of the tunnel does not confine the development of the wall jet within 200b of the nozzle when the height of the tunnel is more than 40b (b is the height of jet nozzle). The features of the centerline flow in the mid plane of the 3D numerical model are close to those of the 2D simulated plane wall jet when the width of the tunnel is more than 20b.

In a liquid-fueled ramjet engine, the insufficient mixing and evaporation result in the low combustion efficiency and combustion instability. Improving its spray characteristics and devising a means of mixing fuel droplets with air may compensate these disadvantages of liquid fuel ramjet engine. The jet penetrations of various fuel injectors were measured to investigate the spray characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine under high pressure air-stream conditions. The penetrations in high pressure conditions are smaller than the values calculated from Inamura's or Lee's equations, and, in the high pressure conditions, the jet penetrations are similar each other. In the dual hole injectors, the jet penetrations of rear orifice is rapidly increased due to the reduction of the drag, which is created by the jet column of front orifice. The jet penetration of rear orifice is increased because of the drag reduction created by the jet column of the front orifice. And, because of the drag reduction formed by the column of jet, the jet penetration in the rear orifice of dual hole injector is much larger than the jet penetration of single hole injector. As the distances of the orifice are increased, the jet penetrations of the rear orifice decrease.

The leading edge of a turbine blade was simulated as a circular cylindrical surface. The effect of free-stream turbulence on the mass transfer upstream of the injectionhole has been investigated experimentally. The effects of injection location, blowing ratio on the Sherwood number distribution were examined as well. The mass transfer coefficients were measured by a naphthalene sublimation technique. The free-stream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is 53,000. Other conditions investigated are: free-stream turbulence intensities of 3.9% and 8.0%, injection locations of $40^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$ from the front stagnation point of the cylinder, and blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1.0. The role of the horseshoe vortex formed upstream edge of the injected jet is dicussed in detail. When the blowing ratio is unity, and the coolant jet is injected at $40^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream of the jet is not affected by the coolant jet at all. On the other hand, when the injection hole is located beyond $50^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream edge of the injection hole suddenly increases due to the formation of the horseshoe vortex, but it dereases as the free-stream turbulence intensity increases because the strength of the horseshoe vortex structure becomes weakened. The role of the horseshoe vortex is clearly evidenced by placing a rigid rod at the injection hole instead of issuing the jet. In the case of the rigid rod, the spanwise Sherwood number upstream of the injection hole is much larger due to the intense influence of the horseshoe vortex.

Various jet engines (Turbine engine family and RAM Jet engine) have been developed for high speed aircrafts. but their application to hypersonic flight is restricted by principle problems such as increase of total pressure loss and thermal stress. Therefore, the development of next generation propulsion system for hypersonic aircraft is a very important subject in the aerospace engineering field, SCRAM Jet engine based on a key technology, Supersonic Combustion. is supposed as the best choice for the hypersonic flight. Since Supersonic Combustion requires both rapid ignition and stable flame holding within supersonic air stream, much attention have to be given on the mixing state between air stream and fuel flow. However. the wider diffusion of fuel is expected with less total pressure loss in the supersonic air stream. So. in this study the direction of fuel injection is inclined 30 degree to downstream and the total pressure of jet is controlled for lower penetration height than thickness of boundary layer. Under these flow configuration both streams, fuel and supersonic air stream, would not mix enough. To spread fuel wider into supersonic air an aerodynamic force, baroclinic torque, is adopted. Baroclinic torque is generated by a spatial misalignment between pressure gradient (shock wave plane) and density gradient (mixing layer). A wedge is installed in downstream of injector orifice to induce an oblique shock. The schlieren optical visualization from side transparent wall and the total pressure measurement at exit cross section of combustor estimate how mixing is enhanced by the incidence of shock wave into supersonic boundary layer composed by fuel and air. In this study non-combustionable helium gas is injected with total pressure 0.66㎫ instead of flammable fuel to clarify mixing process. Mach number 1.8. total pressure O.5㎫, total temperature 288K are set up for supersonic air stream.
The present study investigates experimentally the characteristics of liquid jet, which is, the spray flow in the normal direction of the air stream under the flow conditions of air velocity $110\sim125m/s$. The present study adopts with the flow visualization technique using a short duration light bulb and the image processing analyse with CCD camera. Two types of injector were used: one is a flat plate type, and the other is backward facing step type, which height are 5, 8, 10mm. Dispersion of liquid jet can be represented by gray level of CCD camera. In the upstream of liquid jet, the backward facing step shows better liquid jet penetration. However, in the downstream. mean droplet size for backward facing step injector is smaller than that for flat plate injector

This paper studies the ventilation characteristics according to the jet fan location at the long road tunnel using the CFD software 'FLUENT' which is based on the finite volume method. The tunnel model used in the analysis has a length of 1600m, a cross sectional area of $120m^3$, and is composed of 3 lanes and one way. The velocity profile, the distribution of CO concentration and the ventilation flow rate within the tunnel are analyzed, respectively. In the analysis, it is found that the dependence of the ventilation flow rate upon the jet fan location is small, but the CO concentration in the tunnel is at the lowest when the jet fans are installed near the tunnel outlet. An air stream right below the jet fan is almost inactive due to the strong stream injection near the jet fan. Thus, the pollution level below the jet fan must be higher than the other area.
The ignition characteristics in a confined axisymmetric coflow $CH_4$ jet were investigated numerically with the Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS). The $CH_4$ fuel stream was diluted with main combustion product gases, such as $O_2$, $N_2$, CO, $CO_2$, and $H_2O$, and the mixed fuel stream was heated up to the sufficient temperature where a supplying fuel stream can be ignited. For the calculation of chemical reaction in the simulation, a 2-step global finite chemistry model was considered. Boundary condition for confined wall was optimized by investigating the effects of wall temperature on the ignition characteristics of fuel stream. In addition, the effects of composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature on the ignition of fuel steam were investigated. The ignition characteristics of $CH_4$ stream with diluents were very sensitive to the wall temperature, composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature.
Generation mechanisms of the three moderate-or-greater (MOG)-level clear-air turbulence (CAT) encounters over South Korea are investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The cases are selected among the MOG-level CAT events occurred in Korea during 2002-2008 that are categorized into three different generation mechanisms (upper-level front and jet stream, anticyclonic flow, and mountain waves) in the previous study by Min et al. For the case at 0127 UTC 18 Jun 2003, strong vertical wind shear (0.025 $s^{-1}$) generates shearing instabilities below the enhanced upper-level jet core of the maximum wind speed exceeding 50 m $s^{-1}$, and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT event over mid Korea. For the case at 2330 UTC 22 Nov 2006, areas of the inertia instability represented by the negative absolute vorticity are formed in the anticyclonically sheared side of the jet stream, and turbulence is activated near the observed CAT event over southwest of Korea. For the case at 0450 UTC 16 Feb 2003, vertically propagating mountain waves locally trigger shearing instability (Ri < 0.25) near the area where the background Richardson number is sufficiently small (0.25 < Ri < 1), and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT over the Eastern mountainous region of South Korea.
