In this paper, a mold temperature control method for injection molding is proposed. The inner surface of mold is locally heated by jet impingement to improve pattern transcription. Heating by hot jet is completed while the mold is open. An experimental system that realizes the proposed idea has been built, which includes mold, nozzle assembly and heater. Actual injection molding process including the proposed heating procedure has been conducted to verify the validity of the method. The process has been done for several conditions with different jet temperatures and duration of heating. The results from different conditions are compared.
Experiment of active noise control on supersonic jet noise was conducted by use of microjet injection. The microjets were injected to the shear layer of the main jet through 22 small holes at the lip of a rectangular nozzle. Based on the measurement of farfield sound pressure, it was found that the jet noise was effectively reduced by several dB(in some cases up to 10 dB). The power levels of all measurement points were also reduced by use of microjet injection. The microjet affected not only the broadband noise but also the screech tone noise. The sound pressure level, the frequency of the screech tone, and the structure of the jet could be changed by the microjet. Flow visualization with schlieren technique was also made to observe the effect of microjet on the flow field.
By using a centerbody injection, an effort to reduce shock assoicated noise is made in an underexpanded sonic nozzle with an exit diameter of 10mm. The centerbody or micro nozzle, aligned with the axis of the main jet has an o.d. of 2mm and i.d. of 1.5mm. When measured at 90$^{\circ}$ relative to the main jet the farfield noise spectra showed that the screech tones and broadband shock associated noise can be significantly reduced simply by varying the length of the centerbody and/or mass fraction of the microjet. The maximum reduction in overall sound pressure level (OASPL) was as much as 9 and 4 ㏈ at fully expanded jet Mach numbers Mi of 1.3 and 1.5, respectively, when the length of the centerbody was varied from 0 to 4 main nozzle diameters without blowing. With the aid of the blowing, the maximum reduction in OASPL increased to 12 and 7 ㏈ at M$\sub$j/=1.3 and 1.5, respectively. The impact pressure field in the main jet plume strongly suggested that the reduced periodic pressure distribution in the shear layers and/or centerline is responsible for the reduced screech and broadband shock associated noise. Therefore, the steady blowing by a micro centerbody is a promising technique for shock noise reduction in a supersonic jet.
Analysis for various driven nozzle position changes. The analysis was done for different Reynolds number in entrance region of jet-pump and for several diameter ratios of driven nozzle. (1) The largest absorption energy was found at the point s=1 in condition of diameter ratio 1:3.21 and point s=0.5 in condition of diameter ratio 1:2.25. (2) The absorption energy was not related to the change of entrance velocity and the driven nozzle position having the largest absorption energy was function for cross section ratio. (3) As the position of driven nozzle moves to the downstream, the absorption energy gets weaker. Because the energy from swirl was lost at the cross section gets smaller. (4) As the position of driven nozzle moves to the downstream, the injection energy leans to the upper direction wall and as the Reynolds number increase, the lean phenomenon is more distinct. (5) The flow quantity of driven nozzle, the diameter ratio 1:3.21, was 32% higher than that of 1 : 2.25 and as the inlet velocity gets faster the efficiency decreased. And as the cross section of the driven nozzle increases.
When a secondary gaseous flow is injected vertically into a supersonic flow through circular nozzle, a complicated structure of flow field is produced around the injection area. The interaction between the two streams produces a strong bow shock wane on the upstream side of the side-jet. The results show that bow shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induces the boundary layer separation in front of the side-jet. This study is to analyze the structure of flow fields and distribution of surface pressure on the flat plate according to total pressure ratio using a supersonic cold-flow system and also to study the control force of affected side-jet. The nozzle of main flow was designed to have Mach 2.88 at the exit. The injector has a sonic nozzle with 4mm diameter at the exit of the side-jet. In experiments, The oil flow visualization using a silicone oil and ink was conducted in order to analyze the structure of flow fields around the side-jet. The flow fields are visualized using the schlieren method. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic solution is also compared with experimental results.
In order to understand the behavior of transient gaseous injection used in an LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) engine, turbulent incompressible transient jets with butane and propane were measured and analyzed at pressures of 1.5 bar and 2.0 bar with injector diameters of 3 mm and 5 mm. Mie-scattering method with a tracer was used, and images were processed to investigate the behavior of butane and propane jets. Distances from the nozzle to transition region were measured as $L_e/d_{inj}$=4.35~19.4, where $L_e$ and $d_{inj}$ indicate respectively a distance from nozzle to transition point and nozzle diameter. Slits and tubes around jet at near-field were introduced to measure the effect of entrainment and the diameter of jet, which revealed that the entrainment of surrounding air is significant for developing jet diameter. When the entrainment is restricted, the behavior of jet became deviating from the baseline. It was found that the virtual origin located outside of a nozzle towards jet tip within the conditions of this work, and its location was estimated as $x_o/d_{inj}$=0.56~7.25, where $x_o$ is a distance from nozzle to virtual origin.
The instability wave formed near nozzle region grows to vortex with large scale in downstream region of spray. It plays an important role in the fuel-air mixing, combustion process and engine exhaust emissions in direct injection diesel engine. The objective of this study is to analyze effect of variant parameters (injection pressure, ambient gas density, etc.) and fuel properties on spray instability near nozzle region. Spray structure near nozzle region was investigated using a magnification photograph. A pulsed Nd-YAG laser was used as a light source, and image was taken by CCD camera. The following conclusions are drawn from this experimental analysis. In low ambient density, the effect of fuel properties on spray instability near nozzle region is dominant. In high ambient density, the effect of ambient gas on spray instability near nozzle region is dominant. High jet velocity has strong influence on spray instability.
The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of properties of diesel and biodiesel fuels on the nozzle cavitation and the effect of the length/diameter(L/D) ratio on internal and external flow pattern of nozzle at the various injection conditions. In order to study the effect of the L/D ratio on the nozzle cavitation characteristics of diesel and biodiesel, the characteristics of cavitation flow in the nozzle are visualized and analyzed at the injection pressure of 0.1 MPa to 0.7 MPa by using the visualized images. It was founded that the cavitation was formed in the nozzle orifice at the low injection pressure and the breakup of the issuing liquid jet was promoted at the low L/D ratio. When the L/D ratio decrease, cavitation beginning and growth were affect by cavitation number and Reynolds number.
Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of a conical convergent nozzle. The present study describes a computational work to investigate the effects of annular slit on the spiral jet. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained obviously show that the annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as tangential and axial velocities.
