Flow characteristics of synthetic jet based flow supplying devices have been computationally investigated for different device shapes. Jet momentum was produced by the volume change of a cavity by two piezoelectric-driven diaphragms. The devices have additional flow path compared with the original synthetic jet actuator, and these flow path changes the flow characteristics of synthetic jet actuator. Four non-dimensional parameters, which were functions of the shapes of the additional flow path, were considered as the most critical parameters in jet performance. Comparative studies were conducted to compare volume flow rate and jet velocity. Computed results were solved by 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes solver with k-w SST turbulence model. Detailed computations revealed that the additional flow path diminishes suction strength of the synthetic jet actuator. In addition, the cross section area of the flow path has more influence over the jet performances than the length of the flow path. Based on the computational results, the synthetic jet based flow supplying devices could be improved by applying suitable shape of the flow path.
A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

The turbulent fluctuations of temperature and two components of velocity have been measured with hot- and cold-wires in the Thermally Stratified Wind Tunnel(TSWT). Using the fin-tube heat exchanger type heaters and the neural network control algorithm, both stable ($dT/dz=109.4^{\circ}C$) and unstable ($dT/dz=-49.1^{\circ}C$) stratifications were realized. An ambient air jet was issued normally into the cross flow($U_{\infty}=1.0 m/s$) from a round nozzle(d = 6 mm) flushed at the bottom waII of the wind tunnel with the velocity ratio of $5.8(U_{jet}/U_{\infty})$. The characteristics of turbulent dispersion in the cross flow jet are found to change drastically depending on the thermal stratification. Especially, in the unstable condition, the vertical velocity fluctuation increases very rapidly at downstream of jet. The fluctuation velocity spectra and velocity-temperature cospectra along the jet centerline were obtained and compared. In the case of stable stratification, the heat flux cospectra changes Its sign from a certain point at the far field because of the restratification phenomenon. It is inferred that the main reason in the difference between the vertical heat fluxes is caused by the different length scales of the large eddy motions. The turbulent kinetic energy and scalar dissipation rates were estimated using partially non-isotropic and isotropic turbulent approximation. In the unstable case, the turbulent energy dissipation decreases more rapidly with the downstream distance than in the stable case.

Three dimensional velocity measurements of a 35.deg. inclined jet issuing into turbulent boundary layer on both concave and convex surfaces have been conducted. To investigate solely the effect of each curvature on the flow field, streamwise pressure variations are minimized by adjusting the shape of the opposite wall in the curved region. From the measured velocity components, streamwise mean vorticities are calculated to determine jet-crossflow interface. The results on convex surface show that the injected jet is separated from the wall and the bound vortex maintains its structure far downstream. On concave surface, the secondary flow in the jet cross-sections are enhanced and in some downstream region from the jet exit, the flow on the concave surface has been developed to Taylor-Gortler vortices
In Pressurized Water Reactors, most of the failed fuel rods are often observed at the periphery of the fuel assembly, especially near the core baffle. The rod vibration-induced fretting wear is a significant failure mechanism strongly correlated with the coolant and support conditions. This paper presents a coupled vibration model of double-rod to predict the grid-to-rod fretting (GTRF) wear. A motion-dependent fluid force model is used to simulate the coolant cross flow, the gap constraints with asymmetric stiffness between spring and dimple on the vibration form, and the fretting wear are discussed. The results show the effect of the coupled vibration on the deterioration of wear, providing a sound theoretical explanation of some failure phenomena observed in the previous experiment. Exploratively, we analyze the impact of the baffle jet on the GTRF wear, which indicates that the high-velocity cross-flow will significantly affect the vibration forms while sharply changing the wear behavior.

The spray characteristics of liquid jet minted in subsonic cross-flow were investigated numerically and experimentally. The behaviors of column, penetration and breakup of plain liquid jet in non-swirling cross-flow of air have been studied. Numerical and physical models are based on a modified KIVAII code. The primary atomization is represented by a wave model based on the KH(Kelvin-Helmholtz) instability that is generated by a high interface relative velocity between the liquid and gas flows. CCD camera has been utilized in oder to capture the spray trajectory. The nozzle diameter was 0.5 mm and its L/D ratios were between 1 and 5. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the breakup point is delayed by increasing gas momentum ratio, the penetration decreases by increasing Weber number and the turbulent or nonturbulent liquid jet is obtained at different L/D ratio.
The paper focuses on the integration of a non-linear one-dimensional model of Synthetic Jet (SJ) actuator in a well-assessed numerical simulation method for turbulent compressible flows. The computational approach is intended to the implementation of a numerical tool suited for flow control simulations with affordable CPU resources. A strong compromise is sought between the use of boundary conditions or zero-dimensional models and the full simulation of the actuator cavity, in view of long-term simulation with multiple synthetic jet actuators. The model is integrated in a multi-domain numerical procedure where the controlled flow field is simulated by a standard CFD method for compressible RANS equations, while flow inside the actuator is reduced to a one-dimensional duct flow with a moving piston. The non-linear matching between the two systems, which ensures conservation of the mass, momentum and energy is explained. The numerical method is successfully tested against three typical test cases: the jet in quiescent air, the SJ in cross flow and the flow control on the NACA0015 airfoil.

The effect of triangular multi-tabs attached at the perimeter of jet nozzle on flow structure in the near field was investigated experimentally. A stereoscopic PIV(SPIV) system was employed to measure three orthogonal velocity components of the 3-D turbulent jet. In this study, two different types of sharp-edged jet nozzle having 4, 8 tabs were tested at the Reynolds number of Re=10,000. SPIV measurements were carried out at 5 cross-sectional planes. Six hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each experimental condition and they were ensemble averaged to get spatial distributions of turbulent statistics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity. Entrainment rate of surrounding fluid into the tabbed jets was estimated using the measured 3-D velocity field data. The strong vortex structure was induced for the jet flow with 4 tabs, increasing entrainment rate.

LES(Large eddy simulation) of breakup and atomization of a liquid jet into cross turbulent flow was performed. Two phase flow between a gas phase and a liquid phase was modeled by a mixed numerical scheme of both Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for gas and liquid phases respectively. The first and second breakup of liquid column was observed. The penetration depth in cross flow was comparable with experimental data for several variant of a liquid-gas momentum flux ratio by varying liquid injection velocities. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) distribution downstream of jet was analyzed.

This study was carried out to investigate the flow structure and mixing process of a cross mixing flow formed by two round jets with respect to the ratio of mass flow rate. This flow configuration is of great practical relevance in a variety of combustion systems, and the flow behaviour of a cross jet defends critically on the ratio of mass flow rate and the cross angle. The mass flow rate ratios of two different jets were controlled as 1.0, 0.8, 0.6, and 0.4, and the crossing angle of two round jets was fixed at 45 degree. The velocities issuing from jet nozzle with an exit diameter of 20mm were adjusted to 40m/s, 32m/s, 24m/s, and 16m/s, and the measurements have been conducted in the streamwise range of $1.1X_0$to $2.5X_0$ by an on-line measurement system consisted of a constant temperature type two channel hot-wire anemometry connected to a computer analyzing system. The original air flow was generated by a subsonic wind tunnel with reliable stabilities and uniform flows in the test section. For the analysis of the cross mixing flow structure in the downstream region after the cross point, the mean velocity profiles, the resultant velocity contours, and the three-dimensional profiles depending upon the mass flow rate ratio have been concentrately studied.
