The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, mu1ti-layer laminated beams. The damping radio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. Finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite beams with an ER fluid. For the validation of modeling methodology using viscoelastic theory the predicted dynamic properties are compared to the measured ones by author's previous work. They are in good agreement. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with an ER fluid.
A modeling framework and its computational methodology for an industrial sector of the economy are investigated. The suggested industrial sector model is characterized by a programming (process analysis) representation of a production sector and an econometric estimation of the price sensitive (own and cross-prices) demands. By introducing the price sensitive demands into the process analysis representation of the production sector, it becomes possible to analyze and plan the pricing policy, the optimal production schedules and capacity expansion plans within a single framework. The computational scheme suggested in the report is based on the iterative approach each of which solves a separable convex programming problem.

In this work a numerical method to simulate the response of reinforced concrete structures subject to cyclically imposed displacements is proposed. The method consists of a combination of a displacement and load controlled version of the Newton-Raphson iterative technique, used for the loading and the unloading part of the cycles respectively. The whole procedure is combined with a relatively simple concrete model whose only material parameter is its uniaxial compressive strength. The proposed methodology may realistically simulate, in an easy way, the physical process of any experimentally tested RC structure under imposed displacements cycles. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated through a series of analyses of experimentally tested specimens reported in the literature.
We pay attention to a coupled problem by a penalty term which is induced from non-overlapping domain decomposition methods based on augmented Lagrangian methodology. The coupled problem is composed by two parts mainly; one is a problem associated with local problems in non-overlapping subdomains and the other is a coupled part over all subdomains due to the penalty term. For the speedup of iterative solvers for the coupled problem, we propose two different types of preconditioners: a block-diagonal preconditioner and an additive Schwarz preconditioner as overlapping domain decomposition methods. We analyze the coupled problem and the preconditioned problems in terms of their condition numbers. Finally we present numerical results which show the performance of the proposed methods.

In mechanical structure design area, many FEM (Finite Element Method) packages are used. But the design using FEM packages depends on an iterative trial and error manner and general CAD systems cannot cope with the change of parameters. This paper presents a methodology for building a designing system of a mechanical structure. This system can generate the drawing for a designed structure automatically. It consists of three steps: generation of a structure by selection of the parameters, stress analysis, and generation of a drawing using CAD system. FEM module and parametric CAD module are developed for this system. Inference engine module generates the parameters with a rule base and a model base, and also evaluates the current structure. The parametric design module generates geometric shapes automatically with given dimension. Parametric design is implemented with the artificial intelligent technique. In older to the demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed system, a frame set of bicycle was designed. The system was implemented on an SUN workstation using C language under OpenWindows environment.
This paper deals with the formulation and solution of a wide class of structures, in the presence of both geometric and material nonlinearities, as a particular mathematical programming problem. We first present key ideas for the nonholonomic (path dependent) rate formulation for a suitably discretized structural model before we develop its computationally advantageous stepwise holonomic (path independent) counterpart. A feature of the final mathematical programming problem, known as a nonlinear complementarity problem, is that the governing relations exhibit symmetry as a result of the introduction of so-called nonlinear "residuals". One advantage of this form is that it facilitates application of a particular iterative algorithm, in essence a predictor-corrector method, for the solution process. As an illustrative example, we specifically consider the simplest case of plane trusses and detail in particular the general methodology for establishing the static-kinematic relations in a dual format. Extension to other skeletal structures is conceptually transparent. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate applicability of the procedure.
The effective length factor is a familiar concept for practicing engineers and has long been an approach for column stability evaluations. Neglecting the effects of axial force in the restraining members, in the case of sway prevented frames, is one of the simplifying assumptions which the Alignment Charts, the conventional nomographs for K-Factor determination, are based on. A survey on the problem reveals that the K-Factor of the columns may be significantly affected when the differences in axial forces are taken into account. In this paper a new iterative approach, with high convergence rate, based on the general principles of structural mechanics is developed and the patterns for detection of the critical member are presented and discussed in details. Such facilities are not available in the previously presented methods. A constructive methodology is outlined and the usefulness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by numerical examples.
A process optimal design methodology applicable to steady-state forming with a strain-hardening material is presented. in this approach the optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of a rigid-viscoplastic finite element process model and a derivative based approach is adopted as an optimization technique The process model the schemes for the evaluation of the design sensitivity considering the effect of strain-hardening and an iterative procedure for design optimization are described. the validity of the proposed approach is demonstrated through application to die shape optimal design in extrusion.
The Systems Engineering, as a methodology for engineering and management of today's ever-growing complex system, is a comprehensive and iterative problem-solving process. The process centers on the analysis and management of the stakeholders'needs throughout the entire Life-cycle of a system and searches for an optimized system architecture. There are many essential needs and requirements to be met when a system development task is carried out. Systems Engineering Management PLan(SEMP), as a specification for system development process, must be established to satisfy constraints and requirements of stakeholders successfully and to prevent cost overrun and schedule delay. The paper suggests a systematic SEMP development process and demonstrates a data model and schema for computer-aided systems engineering software, RDD-100, for use in the development and management of SEMP These are being applied to the systems engineering technology development task for the next-generation high-speed railway systems in progress.
Interfacial stresses at two-material interfaces and initial displacement field over the entire domain are obtained by modifying the potential energy functional with a penalty function, which enforces continuity of the stresses at the interface of two materials. Based on the initial displacement field and interfacial stresses, a new methodology to generate a continuous stress field over the entire domain has been proposed by combining the modified projection method of stress-smoothing and Loubignac's iterative method of improving the displacement field. Stress analysis is carried out on two examples made of dissimilar materials : one is a two-material cantilever composed of highly dissimilar materials and the other is a zirconium-lined cladding tube made of slightly dissimilar materials. Results of the analysis show that the proposed method provides an improved continuous stress field over the entire domain, and accurately predicts the nodal stresses at the interface, while the conventional displacement-based finite element method produces significant stress discontinuities at the interface. In addition, the total strain energy evaluated from the improved continuous stress field converges to the exact value in a few iterations.
