The study was performed as a part of 3-D exploration project of the South Con Son basin, where Korea National Oil Co. (KNOC) and SHELL Company are performing joint operation. In the structurally complex area, seismic facies or lap-out patterns, which are usually the tools for the conventional seismic stratigraphy developed by Exxon Group (Vail et at., 1977), are not easily identifiable. Therefore, stratigraphic informations are mainly extracted from seismic attribute maps of each sequence or systems tracts, and isopach maps in correlation with the stratigraphic information from the wells. The attribute maps of the sequence or systems tract boundaries and isopach map describe the variations of paleodepositional environments. The shape of the attribute maps of the boundaries is a reasonable description of the shape of the paleodepositional surface. With other maps such as isopach and structural maps, the variations of the parasequences in the systems tracts can be projected using the surface attribute maps. The reflection intensity attribute at each sequence or system tract boundary can be related to lithology, facies or porosity distributions. The azimuth attribute of source rock sequence can be used to identify the hydrocarbon migration patterns into the prospects. The overall risks of reservoir rocks, cap rocks, structure and hydrocarbon migrations were computed using the results of the study.
Marine magnetic survey were carried out at Sokotra Basin offshore Korea between latitudes $31^{\circ}$ 42'32' N and $32^{\circ}$ 46'29' N, and longitudes $123^{\circ}$ 56'26" E and $125^{\circ}$ 49'16" E in order to estimate the depth of basement complex and as well as to configure it surface and produce the thickness of sedimentary sequence at the study area. Two methods have been used for depth estimation and basement configuration: the power spectrum and the 3-D analytical signal. The estimated depths resulted from the power spectrum method range from 1.4 km to 6.0 km for deep sources (basement troughs), and from 0.3 km to 1.75 km for shallow source (basement peaks). An isopach map was prepared for estimating the thickness of the sedimentary sequence at the study area; it ranges from 1.2 to 4.66 km. The estimated depths resulted from the analytic signal method range from 1.0 to 6 km. A basement configuration map was constructed for the study area in the basin. They show a well agreement with the geology of the study area.
This study considers the historical eruption record in 1702 from the volcanological point of view, which is presumed to have occurred from Mt. Baegdusan volcano. The minium volume of erupted materials is estimated to be $1.2km^3$ when calculated with an empirical formula using an isopach line obtained from two points 140 km away from the vent. The 1702 eruption was a paroxysmal one with VEI of 5. The historical record described a deposition of wind-modified fallout ash by movement of hot ash cloud. To prepare for the future eruption, we have to analyze historical literatures and understand characteristics of volcano.
The principle and applications of GPR(Ground Penetrating Radear) are familiar to engineering geologists and geophsicists as very attractive technique for continuous high resolution images of the subsurface. However, the main limitation of GPR is obviously related to presence of clayey or silty conductive soils, resulting in complete attenuation of radar signals. This difficulty gives hesitation for the exploration of the deeper targets for example detecting bedrock, particularly in Korean situation that most regions have conductive overburden. In order to prove usefulness of geological survey with GPR in that situation, the technique was tried to investigate depth of bedrock under thick conductive overburden and the other geolocgical informations for the constructionof foundation in the Dongbu apartment site, Kimhae. The reflection patterns on the processed GPR sections are well correlated with the geotechnical units-bedrock, alluvium, landfill unit and their internal layer-boundaries of boring data before GPR survey, except upper contact of bedrock. The isopach maps of the geotechnical units for the 3-D interpretations are made from GPR sections. The maps provided useful geological information that bedrock was distributed as plain and valley with 22~27m depth under alluvium unit (this depth is 5~8 m deeper than drill log) and sedimentary layers subsided and bended along growth fault with NNE strike/15$^{\circ}$SE dip in alluvium unit.
Jinhae Bay, one of the largest tidal bays on the southern coast of Korea, is an area with thick accumulations of recent, fine-grained sediments, mainly supplied from the Nakdong River. The preponderance of silt and clay particles reflects the large quantity of sediments transported in suspension. Although the clay mineral assemblage is similar to that derived from the nearby Nakdong River, relatively high concentration (3-9%) of smectite suggests some local input of fine particles from several streams around the bay or some contribution from the offshore water that may be influenced by the Tsushima Current. The content of organic matters in sediments is as high as 12%, and their C/N ratios imply that they are comprised of mixtures derived from marine plankton and terrestrial plants. $^{210}Pb$ excess activity profiles of sediment cores yield an average sedimentation rate (a 100-year time scale) of about 2-5 mm/yr, which coincides well with the long-term sedimentation rate (a 1000-year time scale) estimated from the sediment isopach map. On the basis of sediment bulk density and sedimentation rate, an annual sink of mud in the bay is estimated approximately 1.0 ${\times}$$10^{6}$ tons per year.
Numerical method of nonlinear regression was introduced to characterize grain-size distribution more effectively than using the traditional textural parameters. This technique proved critical particularly to multimodal size distributions, as exemplified by samples from Cheju strait continental shelf. Grain-size analysis of samples collected from the Cheju Strait continental shelf reveals that 86% of the grain-size distributions are multimodal. As multimodal grain-size distribution deviates from the statistical (log) normal distribution, the grain-size parameters traditionally used in sediment studies do not describe the distribution efficiently. Therefore, the use of grain-size curves into elementary normal component curves was used. Means and standard deviations of 387 decomposed normal components were decided by a decomposition method (nonlinear least square regression) from 167 size curves of the Cheju Strait sediments. The mean values of decomposed normal components show peaks at 1-3 phi and 8-9 phi size classes. The plot of mean values of the coarse fraction normal components on the map shows a characteristic and complex areal distribution. On the basis of the areal distribution of the mean values of the components and that of isopach of total Plenipotence sediment, the areal distribution of layers composing a transgressive sand of Late Plenipotence age were revealed.
In the last ten years, marine geological and geophysical survey and research were conducted by Japanese, Russian and American scientists in the East Sea of Korea (Japan Sea). Many research results were published. However, regional research of the geology of the continental margin of the Korean Peninsula was not conducted. This study has made on attempt to classify submarine strata and stratigraphic boundaries. The study has revealed characters of submarine geology and structure. Isopach maps of each identified stratigraphic unit have been constructed as the results of this study. The study was conducted on the basis of analyses of marine seismic surveys carried out in the continental margin of the East Sea between Kangneung and Pohang. Three depositional basins were identified in the study area and they were named as, Mukho Basin, Hupo Basin and Pohang Basin. The Mukho Basin is developed in continental slope and shelf in the area between Kangneung and Samcheog. Quaternary and Pliocene sediments attain a maximum thickness of 900 m. Basement rocks are interpreted as granite and gneiss. They are correlated with granite-gneiss of the Taebaecksan Series of Pre-cambrian age and the Daebo granite of Jurassic age. The Hupo Basin is developed in the continental shelf between Uljin and Youngdeok. Quaternary and Pliocene sediments attain a maximum thickness of 600 m. Basement rocks were interpreted as granite and gneiss and they are correlated with metamorphic rocks of Pre-cambrian age and the Daebo granites, comprising the Ryongnam Massif. The Pohang Basin is developed in the area between Pohang and Gangu. This basin contains Miocene and older sediments. Basement rocks are not shown. Many faults are developed within the continental shelf and slope. These faults strike parallel with the coast line. A north-south direction is predominant in the southern study area. However, in the northern study area the faults strike north, and north-west. The faults are parallel to each other and are step faults down-thrown to the east or west, forming horst and graben structures which develop into sedimentary basins. Such faults caused the development of submarine banks along the boundary between the continental shelf and slope. This bank has acted as a barrier for deposition in the Hupo Basin. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks distributed widely in the adjacent land area are absent in the Mukho Basin. This suggests that the area of the basin was situated above the sea level until the Pliocene time. The study area contains Pliocene sediments in general. These sediments overlie the basement complex composed of metamorphic rocks, granites, Cretaceous (Kyongsang System) sedimentary rocks and Miocene sedimentary rocks. These facts lead to a conclusion that the continental shelf and slope of the study area were developed as a result of displacements along faults oriented parallel to the present coast line in the post Miocene time.

Depths to four seismic sequence boundaries and the thickness of each sequence were estimated and mapped based on multi-channel seismic data in the Ulleung Basin. These depth-structure and isopach maps were incorporated into the interpretation of gravity and magnetic anomaly maps. The sediment thickness ranges from 3,000 m to 4,000 m in the central basin, while it reaches 6,000 m locally along the southwestern, western, and southeastern margins. The acoustic basement forms a northeast-southwest elongated depression deeper than 5000 m, and locally deepens up to 7,500 m in the southwestern and western margins. Low gravity anomalies along the western and southern margins are associated with basement depressions with thick sediment as well as the transitional crust between the continental and oceanic crusts. Higher gravity anomalies, dominant in the central Ulleung basin, broaden from southwest toward northeast, are likely due to the shallow mantle and a dense crust. A pair of magnetic elongations in the southeastern and northwestern margins appear to separate the central Ulleung basin from its margin. These magnetic elongations are largely dominated by intrusive or extrusive volcanics which occurred along the rifted margin of the Ulleung basin formed during the basin opening. The crust in the central Ulleung Basin, surrounded by the magnetic elongations, is possibly oceanic as inferred from the seismic velocity. The oceanic crust can be mapped in the central zone where it widens to 120 km from the southwest toward northeast. Bending of the crustal boundary in the southern part of the Ulleung Basin suggests that the Ulleung Basin has been deformed by a collision of the Phillipine plate into the Japan arc.
