  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the basic unit of irrigation water on golf courses in Jeju Island. The amounts of rainwater and groundwater used on 20 golf courses have been monitored for this study. The characteristics of rainwater and groundwater from the selected 20 golf courses were analyzed based on the existing data that had been collected for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2009. The range of monthly irrigation water (groundwater + rainwater) used was about $13,200\sim55,600\;m^3$/month, with average of $36,600\;m^3$/month. In the respects of the amount of annual water used, groundwater was recorded as $163,500\;m^3$/year, and rainwater was recorded as $275,400\;m^3$/year. Thus, the total annual irrigation water used was approximately $439,000\;m^3$/year. The correlation (R2) between golf course lot size and average amount of monthly irrigation water used was 0.65, and the monthly basic unit per golf course area ($1,000\;m^2$) was calculated as $60\;m^3$.

  • In order to plan the effective irrigation project in unripened reclaimed paddy fields, the estimation of criteria of irrigation water requirements for the normal growth of crops is very important. This study was carried out to determine the leaching requirements before cultivating crops, the consumptive use of water by the growth of crops, and preventive water requirements of resalinization during the growth period in unripened reclaimed paddy fields. The irrigation water requirements in good permeable soils were estimated as 2,530mm for culvert treatment(S1CW3) and 3,080mm for non-culvert treatment(S1NW4), which were 1.8 times and 2.4 times as high as the irrigation water requirements in common rice fields, respectively. And, in case of poor permeable soils, 3,360mm for culvert treatment(S2CW4) and 3.580mm for non-culvert treatment(S2NW4) were estimated, which were 2.5 times and 2.8 times higher than the normal irrigation water requirements, respectively.

  • This study aims to contribute to efficient paddy field water management by developing an IoT-based automatic paddy inlet that can consider water level changes according to variations in the supplied water quantity through irrigation channels. This IoT-based automatic paddy inlet not only ensures water level changes based on the supply of irrigation water but also secures irrigation efficiency. The effectiveness and efficiency of the developed IoT-based automatic paddy inlet were presented to contribute to efficient paddy field water management. As a result, the IoT-based automatic paddy inlet demonstrated the capability to maintain the optimal water level in the paddy field. Particularly, it exhibited up to 18.4% higher water resource usage efficiency compared to conventional paddy inlet, emphasizing the IoT-based automatic paddy inlet's advantage in terms of water resource usage.

  • In recent years, there have been a lot of severe flood and drought disasters and the rural environment have been worsened due to rapid industrialization and urbanization in the river basins of Korea. To prevent such disasters and to improve environment in the era of climate change, Korean Government carried out 110 projects to heighten irrigation dam in the rural area. The study has been carried out to evaluate the heightening work of the irrigation dam for the supply of reserved water and to derive optimal scheme to allocate the water resource for irrigation, domestic demand and environmental conservation as well as to contribute for the rural development in sustainable way. The study is focused on the Seoam Irrigation Dam which has been constructed in 2005 to be connected with the new Gami Reservoir which has been constructed since 2010. In addition, it was studied the contribution effect of the reservoirs for the adjacent comprehensive rural development projects which have been executed by local government. In the study, the principles and visions of sustainable development which have been derived by International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage is applied to estimate the sustainability of the irrigation dams in line with the adjacent comprehensive rural development projects. The project is estimated that the water resource in the reservoirs shall be used integratedly in cooperation with various stakeholders not only to conserve water environment but also to increase productivity of agricultural goods and ecological tour in the rural area.

  • This study aimed to determine the effect of organic matter content and water condition in soil on yield, carbohydrate, and inulin contents of two varieties of Jerusalem artichoke. The plants were grown with high and low organic soil either under irrigation or no irrigation in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. In result, the yield of Jerusalem artichoke was higher about 7 kg in soil with high organic matter than in soil with low organic matter, while it was higher about 11 kg under the irrigation than under no irrigation. The yield of white variety was higher about 9 kg than that of purple variety. Under the irrigation, a 12 kg and 9 kg of higher yields were observed in the soil with high and low organic matter content, respectively, than under no irrigation.

  • The study was carried out to investigate the dimension of irrigation canal, and measure the water flow of those diverted from Kimje main canal in Dongjin irrigation area. The rating curves indicating the relationships between water level and discharge of the lateral canals were induced using the measured data with high regression coefficients of 0.957~0.999 at inlet points and 0.932~0.998 at end points, respectively. And Manning's roughness coefficients were estimated as the ranged from 0.015 to 0.074 at inlet points and 0.056 to 0.089 at end points with rectangular type of concrete open irrigation canals, the Manning's roughness coefficients of the end points were less than those values of the end points, which may be considered as the deposition of the bottom sediments.

  • As abnormal weather conditions escalate, water disasters such as droughts and floods occur more frequently. These natural disasters are fatal to agricultural reservoirs, where the operation techniques vary greatly depending on the season and weather conditions, and response through intake works is limited. In response, governments like the Korea Rural Community Corporation have researched efficient water supply methods through irrigation channels. Therefore, previous studies analyzed the irrigation process using numerical models to determine an efficient irrigation system. However, SWMM and EPANET used in previous studies are limited in quantitative agricultural irrigation process analysis. Therefore, this study developed AIRISS to simulate and analyze agricultural irrigation. Specifically, we simulated the irrigation process in the Ssangbong area of South Korea and simulated the irrigation process to verify the performance of the numerical model. AIRISS, developed in this study, is specialized in simulating the agricultural irrigation process. It can check the supply to each paddy and the condition of each paddy.

  • For most upland crops in Korea, underground water is used to ensure an adequate water supply. Thus, surface water storage tanks are needed to supply surface water from reservoirs or streams. This study discusses the design, manufacture and monitoring of a water storage tank capable of reliably supplying water to crops and preventing the inflow of floating debris. The study was conducted in an apple orchard in Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do in Korea. Based on the water requirements of the crops and size of the orchard, a required flow volume of about 0.6 ㎥·h-1 was determined, along with a surface water storage tank capacity of 1.2 ㎥. Following a comparison with other materials, stainless steel (STS) was used to construct the water tank. The tank was designed to provide 14 hours of irrigation, enabling a small-capacity, cost-efficient tank design to be used. A surface water irrigation test was performed using the surface water storage tank. The average surface water irrigation flow rate was 0.00045 ㎥·m-2·h-1. The water quality test showed that the pH, suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) values satisfied the reference values for agricultural water. The test results showed that the surface water storage tank evaluated in this study allows for crop irrigation when there is a lack of groundwater during droughts.
