To remove metal stains of the ceramics, chemical cleaning is essential case by case. This study investigated the removal characteristics of iron stains by oxalic acid and citric acid including their application methods of soaking and poultice. The soaking method in cleaning agents showed removal process by color difference and released iron contents from iron stains on ceramics. Iron stains were removed successfully from ceramics, which soaked in oxalic acid for 60 hours. However, it is recommendable to soak in 0.25M oxalic acid for one to three hours because most iron stains were disappeared in 3 hours soaking. Citric acid is less effective than oxalic acid in removing iron stains because of heavy molecular weight and low acidity. Poultices (bentonite, sepiolite, activated carbon fiber and celite) with oxalic acid were applied on contaminated ceramics. After ten hours, iron stains on ceramics were removed successfully by poultice. Among them, bentonite and sepiolite have better application. Therefore, sepiolite with 0.25M oxalic acid was applied on the iron stains of whiteware and celadon from Ma Island, and then stains were removed. However, it is judged that the application methods can be varied according to the form and depth of contaminant. In addition, the residues of poultice on the ceramics will be considered for preventing contamination.

This study proposed the method of phosphate recovery from municipal wastewater by using ferrous iron waste, generated from the mechanical process in the steel industry. In the analysis of XRD, ferrous iron waste was composed of $Fe_3O_4$ (magnetite), practically with $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$. It had inverse spinel structure. In order to identify the adsorption characteristic of phosphate on ferrous iron waste, isotherm adsorption test was designed. Experimental results were well analyzed by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm theories. Empirical constants of all isotherms applied increased with alkalinity in the samples, ranging from 1.2 to 235 $CaCO_3/L$. In the regeneration test, empirical constants of Langmuir isotherm, i.e., $q_{max}$ (maximum adsorption capacity) and b (energy of adsorption) decreased as the frequency of regeneration was increased. Experiment was further performed to evaluate the performance of the treatment scheme of chemical precipitation by ferrous iron waste followed by biological aerated filter (BAF). The overall removal efficiency in the system increased up to 80% and 90% for total phosphate (TP) and soluble phosphate (SP), respectively, and the corresponding effluent concentrations were detected below 2 mg/L and 1 mg/L for TP and SP, respectively. However, short-circuit problem was still unsolved operational consideration in this system. The practical concept applied in this study will give potential benefits in achieving environmentally sound wastewater treatment as well as environmentally compatible waste disposal in terms of closed substance cycle waste management.
Shallow alluvial groundwaters in Korea of tell exceed the Korean Drinking Water Standard for dissolved iron (0.3 mg/L), which is one of the important water quality problems, especially in the use of bank infiltration technique. Using the reactive transport modeling, in this study we simulated the effectiveness of injection-and-pumping technique to remove dissolved iron in groundwater. The results of simulation showed that pumping of groundwater after injection of oxygenated water into aquifers is very effective to acquire the permissible water quality level. Groundwater withdrawal up to several times of irjected water in volume can be applicable to yield drinkable water. Potential problems such as clogging and permeability lowering due to in-situ precipitation of iron hydroxides may be insignificant. We also discuss on the mechanism and spatial extent of iron removal in aquifer.
Perchlorate ($ClO_4^-$) is a contaminant found in surface water and soil/ground water. Autotrophic perchlorate-reducing bacteria (PRB) use hydrogen gas ($H_2$) as an electron donor to remove perchlorate. Since iron corrosion can produce $H_2$, feasibility of autotrophic perchlorate-removal using zero-valent iron (ZVI) was examined in this study using activated sludge that is easily available from a wastewater treatment plant. Batch test showed that activated sludge microorganisms could successfully degrade perchlorate in the presence of ZVI. The perchlorate biodegradation was confirmed by molar yield of $Cl^-$ as perchlorate was degraded. Scanning electron microscope revealed that rod-shaped microorganisms on the surface of iron particles used for the autotrophic perchlorate-removal, suggesting that iron particles could serve as supporting media for the formation of biofilm as well. DGGE analyses revealed that microbial profile of the inoculum (activated sludge) was different from that of biofilm sample obtained from the ZVI-added enrichment culture used for $ClO_4^-$-degradation. A major band of the biofilm sample was most closely related to the class Clostridia.
The samples used for this work were low grade c1ay($Fe_2O_3$ : 2.90%, $TiO_2$ : 1.65%) produced from Youngsan-po district, and for the iron-bearing impurities removal having a bad influence on Kaoline sample was carried out column floatatoin using Oleic acid, Potassium oleat, Aero 840 promotor, Aero 870 promotor and Keroseneas collectors. For removal of the iron-vearing impurities from the kaoline, investigated first chemical composition size distribution of Kaoline sample, also performanced a basic study on pulp density, collector and pH change on a sort of frother. The flotation separation of impurities from kaoline can be achieved by using both oleic acid and Aero 840 promotor as collectors within narrow acid limits(pH 2-3). Pine oil was more effective frother than MIBC with olelic acid as aa collector.
The formation of sulfide from sulfate has been discussed from the thermodynamic principles. No mechanism of the reaction has been presented. From the stoichiometric and Nernst equations for the conversion of sulfate into sulfide, it was concluded that the formation of sulfide from sulfate can take place more readily if pH of a medium is low. The difficulty of this conversion increases with increasing pH. As pH of a medium increases, the degree of dissociation of H₂S into S= increases and this, in turn, renders the chance of precipitation of sulfide as FeS easier. Higher the pH of a soil or medium, greater is the S= concentration. The concentration of ferrous ion required to remove dissolved sulfide in a medium by forming insoluble FeS decreases with increasing pH. From the theory it was pointed out that an application of lime and iron rich foreign substances to a soil may be effective in causing the removal of dissolved sulfide from solution.

The use of ion exchange resins to remove ionic impurities from solution is prevalent in industrial process systems, including in the primary heat transport system (PHTS) purification circuit of nuclear power plants. Despite its extensive use in the nuclear industry, our general understanding of ion exchange cannot fully explain the complex chemistry in ion exchange beds, particularly when operated at or near their saturation limit. This work investigates the behaviour of mixed-bed ion exchange resin, saturated with species representative of corrosion products in a CANDU (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) reactor PHTS, particularly with respect to iron chemistry in the resin bed and the removal of lithium ions from solution. Experiments were performed under deaerated conditions, analogous to normal PHTS operation. The results show interesting iron chemistry, suggesting the hydrolysis of cation resin bound ferrous species and the subsequent formation of either a solid hydrolysis product or the soluble, anionic Fe(OH)3-.
Cheese is a nutritious food with various balanced nutrients, such as proteins, peptides, amino acids, fats, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Domestic cheese varieties and quality need to be improved to prevent imported cheese. To develop those cheeses, search for previous works and research for new products are needed. In cheese ripening of hard cheese, such as Cheddar or Parmesan cheese, is ripened for 2 to 24 months at 2 to 16$^{\circ}C$ to develop desired cheese flavor and body characteristics. Long time with low temperature to ripen the cheese requires high expenses. So accelerated cheese ripening is a good potential for saving in industry. Methods for acceleration of cheese ripening are temperature control, addition of bacteria or enzymes. To develop the functionality of cheese, addition of microencapsulated various probiotics and nutrients, such as iron, removal of cholesterol by crosslinked ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin, lowering blood cholesterol and serum glucose by nanopowdered functional materials et al. are necessary. Therefore, this review focused on the functionality of cheese, such as the acceleration of cheese ripening, microencapsulated probiotics and iron, and cholesterol removal.
A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate the nitrate removal from groundwater using Iron chloride(III) coated activated carbon (ICCAC). The breakthrough profiles of two ionic species, such as nitrate and sulfate showed that nitrate was selectively exchanged with chloride in ICCAC. The $FeCl_3$-coated activated carbon produced about 26 BV (Bed volume) of throughout when treating groundwater containing about $25\;mg/\iota\;of\;NO_3-N$. The regeneration of ICCAC with 1M KC1 was effective at a flow rate of 4 BV/hr. The ion exchange technology seems to be suitable technology for the treatment of small volumes of groundwater polluted by nitrate.
