  • The magnetic properties of aluminium anodized film in which Co-Fe alloy electrodeposited are investigated with regard to the alloy composition of magnetic films. The electrodeposited Co-Fe particles are confirmed to be single phase Co-Fe alloys by X-ray diffractions. The coercive force as well as the magnetic anisotropy energy can be controlled by changing the composition of the alloy. Magneticfilms having high saturation magnetization and high coercive force were obtained.

Preparation of Iron Catalytic Layer onto Functionalized Silicon Substrate for Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes

  • In this study, iron oxide nanoclusters layer (Nc) was prepared onto functionalized silicon substrate by wet method. The amine-terminated SAM fabricated on silicon substrate (APTMS/Si) was carried out by UV-treatment and immersed into the FeCl3/HCl aqueous solution. Then, Nc were immobilized onto oxidized SAM silicon substrate (SAMs/Si) through electrostatic interaction between cationic Nc and anionic SAMs/Si. This catalytic layer (Nc/SAMs/Si) was used to grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The characterization results clearly show that the well-graphitized CNTs were synthesized by using functionalized silicon substrate as a template having appropriate density of catalyst. These consequences show that SAM containing template is important to achieve the effective layer of catalyst to synthesize CNTs.

TiAl 합금의 고온 산화에 미치는 Fe의 영향 (Effect of Fe on the High Temperature Oxidation of TiAl Alloys)

  • To understand the effect of Fe on the oxidation behavior of TiAl alloys, TiAl-(2, 4, 6at% )Fe were oxidized at 800 and 90$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation resistance of TiAl-Fe alloys increased with increasing an iron content. The scales formed consisted of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, an intermediate $A1_2$$O_3$ layer, and an inner mixed ($TiO_2$+$A1_2$$O_3$) layer, being similar to other common TiAl alloys. But, the scales formed on TiAl-Fe alloys were generally thin compared to those formed on pure TiAl, and contained dissolved iron. Below the oxide scale, an oxygen affected zone was formed. This beneficial effects of Fe on increasing the oxidation resistance and scale adherence of TiAl alloys were attributed to the refinement of oxide grains, increased scale adherence and the enhanced alumina-forming tendency.

광택 니켈 도금속에 미치는 이가식 이온의 영향 (The Effects of Ferrous Ion on Properties of Bright Nickel Electordeposit)

  • The effects of ferrous ion on the properties of bright nickel electrodeposit were exa-mined. Iron exists as ferrous ion (Fe+2) and ferric ion (Fe+3) in the bath, a portion of the former tend to be oxidized to the somewhat harmful ferric ion. Iron was added to bath as the ferrous sulfate, ferrous ion prevented from the oxidation with citric acid. It was found that the hardness was increased as the concentration of ferrous ion, the ductility was slightly increased too. The appearance can obtain the wide bright deposits within 4g/$\ell$. The corrosion resistance drastically dropped from 5g/$\ell$ In the case of considering the effect of ferrous ion on the corrosion resistance and the appearance, the allowable limits is 4g/$\ell$, if the reductant is used.

환원분철을 이용한 마찰재의 성능에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Performance of Friction Materials using Reduced Iron)

  • 브레이크 마찰재의 구성성분 중 기존에 사용되던 무기 충진재인 $BaSO_4$ 대신에 고로슬러지와 그 산화철에 일련의 환원과정을 행하여 얻은 환원분철을 10%, 20%, 30%씩 첨가하면서 몇 종류의 마찰재를 제작하였다. 이 마찰재들에 대해 기본 물성시험, 브레이크 다이마모미터를 사용한 마찰성능 시험 등을 행하였다. 그리고 고가의 충진재인 $BaSO_4$를 환원분철로 대체하여 마찰재에 첨가한 경우, 발열온도, 마모 등의 마찰특성이 우수한 환원분철의 첨가량은 10%이었다. 고로슬러지나 환원분철 시편에서 고로슬러지와 환원분철의 첨가량이 증가할수록 마찰재의 전단강도와 접착강도는 감소하나 모두 마찰재로서의 적용에는 충분한 강도를 나타내었다.

  • Oxidative stress is a cascade reaction characterized by a significant increase in the amount of oxidized components. Free radicals produced by oxidative stress are one of the common features in several experimental models of disease, and contribute to wide range of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Iron (II) species can participate in the Fenton, and Fenton-like reactions, to react with hydrogen peroxide and generate hydroxyl radical. As iron accumulation and oxidative stress are associated with the pathological progression of neurodegenerative diseases, iron chelation and antioxidant therapies have become strategies to combat these diseases. Due to the complexity of the redox system in vivo, a multifaceted approach may be an attractive therapeutic strategy. Further investigations are highly expected for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases in future.

Recovery of Nickel from Spent Electroless Nickel Plating Baths

  • With Increasing importance of electroless nickel plating technology in many fields such as electronic and automobile industries, the treatment of the spent baths is becoming a serious problem. These spent baths contain iron and zinc as impurities, organic acids as complexing reagents, and phosphonate ions as oxidized species of tile reducing reagent. as well as several grams per liter of nickel. The spent baths are currently treated by conventional precipitation method. but a mettled with no sludge generation is desired. This work aims at establishing a recycling process of nickel from tile spent baths using solvent extraction. Extraction behaviors of nickel. iron. and zinc in various 쇼pes of real spent baths are investigated as a function of pH using LIX841, di (2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), and PC88A as tile extractants. Nickel is extracted by LIX84I at the equilibrium pH of more than 6 with high efficiency. For the weakly acid baths. iron and zinc are extracted by D2EHPA or PC88A without adjusting the pH of the baths leaving nickel in the aqueous phase. Stripping of nickel from LIX84I with sulfuric acid is also investigated. It is shown that concentrated nickel sulfate solution (> 100 ㎏-Ni/㎥) is obtained. This solution can be reused in the electroless plating process. Based on these findings, flow sheets for recovering nickel from the spent baths are proposed.

함백지향내의 스카른광상에서 산출되는 석류석과 단사휘석의 광물학과 철화학 (Mineralogy and Iron Chemistry of Garnets and Clinopyroxenes in the Skarn Deposits, the Hambaek Geosyncline Belt, Korea)

  • In the southern limb of the Hambaek geosyncline belt, large-scaled skarn deposits are developed in the Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks of the Chosun Supergroup. They are the Sangdong tungsten deposit, Geodo iron-copper deposit, Yeonhwa I and II lead-zinc deposits, and Ulchin zinc-lead deposit, all of which are associated with various skarn minerals. Though different occurrences and paragenesis are found in different deposits, most skarn deposits always have skarns of garnet (andradite-grossular series) and clinopyroxene(heden-bergite-diopside series). Andradite and hedenbergite are Fe-dominant members, but show different oxidation states, that is, Fe3+ for andradite and Fe2+ for hedenbergite. According to iron chemistry and log([Fe/Al]gd/[Fe/Mg]cpx) derived from equilibrium reactions, the diopside-andradite and hedenbergite-grossular pairs suggest the oxidized state (dian type) and reduced state (hegro type), respectively. Among skarn deposits developed in the Hambaek geosynline, it can be classified that the Geodo and Yeonhwa I skarns are of dian type, while the Sangdong, Yeonhwa II, and Ulchin deposits are of hegro type. This classification is not applicable to all kinds of skarn deposits, but may be applicable to such deposits as are more controlled by oxygen fugacity than composition of skarn fluid.

Corrosion of Carbon Steel with and without Aluminized Coating in (O, S, H)-containing Gases at 500-800℃

  • The carbon steel formed the thick, somewhat porous, loosely adherent iron oxide scale when oxidized at $500-800^{\circ}C$ for 15 h in air. It formed the thicker, more porous, nonadherent scale consisting of FeS plus iron oxides in $Ar/1%SO_2$-mixed gas. It formed the much thicker, more porous, nonadherent scale consisting of FeS plus iron oxides in Ar/0.1% $H_2S$-mixed gas. However, the aluminized carbon steel formed the thin, protective $Al_2O_3$ surface scale even in $Ar/1%SO_2$-, and $Ar/0.1%H_2S$-mixed gas. Aluminizing drastically improved the corrosion resistance in (O, S, H)-containing gas.

pH Effect on the Structure of Reduced NifU-like Protein from Helicobacter pylori

  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) survives in acidic and fluctuating pH conditions of the stomach. The pH effect on H. pylori proteins is important for the advanced understanding of its evolution and viability, although this bacterium has the molecular machinery that neutralizes the acidic condition. HP1492 is known as a conserved NifU-like protein from H. pylori. NifU is a nitrogen fixation protein that mediates the transfer of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster to iron-sulfur proteins like ferredoxin. Commonly, the monomeric reduced state of NifU can be converted to the dimeric oxidized state by intermolecular disulfide bond formation. Because it remains unclear that HP1492 actually behaves as known NifU protein, we first found that this protein can adopt both oxidized and reduced forms using size exclusion chromatography. Circular dichroism experiment showed that HP1492 is relatively well-structured at pH 6.5, compared to other pH conditions. On the basis of the backbone resonance assignment of HP1492, we further characterized the residues that are sensitive to pH using NMR spectroscopy. These residues showing large chemical shift changes could be mapped onto the secondary structure of the protein. Our results could provide the foundation for structural and biophysical studies on a wide spectrum of NifU proteins.
