Sixty isolates of Dendrophoma obscurans isolated from 19 important strawberry growing areas of Korea were tested in vitro for resistance to thiophanate-methyl and iprodione. Naturally-occurring thiophanate-methyl-resistant isolates were about 43 percents of isolates tested, whereas iprodione-resistant isolates were 10 percents. All these resistant isolates except SU 1 and SU 2, which were highly resistant to thiophanate-methyl, showed a week level of resistance. Iprodione-resistant isolates were readily obtained in vitro, when mycelial disk of the fungus was incubated on PDA media containing iprodione at the concentrations of $1{\mu}g/ml\;and\;10{\mu}g/ml$, but no thiophanate-methyl-resistant isolate from the mycelia with or without UV irradiation. All these artificially-obtained iprodione-resistant isolates were showed a high degree of resistance. On the strawberry leaves, thiophanate-methyl and iprodione were no longer effective to all resistant isolates at the recommended concentration, and the protective value to highly resistant isolates was much less than that of weakly resistant isolates. Isolates resistant to thiophanate-methyl were also resistant to benomyl but iprodione-resistant isolates did not show cross-resistance to thiophanate-methyl, benomyl, captan and zineb. Captan controlled both thiophanate methyl-resistant and iprodione-resistant isolates as effectively as sensitive isolates.
Antifungal activity of 20 chemicals registered to turfgrass diseases was evaluated. Among the chemicals, iprodione, benomyl, iprodione+thiram, pencycuron+tebuconazole, hexaconazole, and iprodione+thiophanate-methyl exhibited high antifungal activity to the dollar spot fungus. All isolates were greatly inhibited by the chemicals at the concentration over 32ppm($\mu\textrm{g}$/ml). However, sensitivity of the isolates to chemicals was varied at the lower concentration as 8 and 16 ppm as follows. The isolate originated from Ora golf course was resistant to iprodione and iprodione+thiophanate methyl, Gonjiam isolate to iprodion, Youngpyung isolate to iprodione+thiram, and Dogo isolate to iprodione+thiram, pencycuron+tebuconazole, and tebuconazole. It was found from this study that the varied chemical resistance among the isolates was positively related to the application time of the chemical in the golf course. Consequently, when a chemical was applied more often times than the others to the golf course, the fungal isolates originate from the field showed higher resistance to the former chemical. Effects of the chemicals on control of the dollar spot was evaluated in the field. All tested chemicals revealed over 70% disease control efficacy, however, mepronil+propiconazole was the best showing 83% control efficacy and followed by fenarimo, iprodione, terbuconazole, thiram, and thiophanate-methyl.
BACKGROUND: To investigate the dissipation patterns of 3 pesticides, azoxystrobin, difenoconazole and iprodione, on green garlic after field treatment pesticides were treated as foliar treatment by single application at recommended and double the recommended rates. METHODS AND RESULTS: Residue samples were harvested at 0, 1, 2, 5, 7 and 10 days post-treatment for azoxystrobin and 0, 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 21 days post-treatment for difenoconazole and iprodione. After preparation the fortified samples were extracted and analyzed by gas chromotography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD) to determine the residue levels. Recoveries ranged from 87 to 109% for azoxystrobin, difenoconazole and iprodione at two different levels. The limit of Quantification (LOQ) values were 0.002 mg/kg for azoxystrobin and difenoconazole and 0.01 mg/kg for iprodione. CONCLUSION(S): Half-lives of azoxystrobin, difenoconazole and iprodione in green garlic after treatment were 1.2, 3.8 and 3.2 days at recommended and 1.4, 3.3 and 3.2 at double the recommended rate, respectively. Residue level of azoxystrobin, difenoconazole and iprodione in green garlic were below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) at 0 day, 0 day and 5 days, respectively. Therefore, these pesticide were considered that residues was satisfied to the requirement of domestic trade related to the consumer safety.
Fungicide-resistant Alternaria alternata impede the practical control of the Alternaria diseases in crop fields. This study aimed to investigate cytological fungicide resistance mechanisms of A. alternata against dicarboximide fungicide iprodione. A. alternata isolated from cactus brown spot was cultured on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) with or without iprodione, and the fungal cultures with different growth characteristics from no, initial and full growth were observed by light and electron microscopy. Mycelia began to grow from one day after incubation (DAI) and continued to be in full growth (control-growth, Con-G) on PDA without fungicide, while on PDA with iprodione, no fungal growth (iprodione-no growth, Ipr-N) occurred for the first 3 DAI, but once the initial growth (iprodione-initial growth, Ipr-I) began at 4-5 DAI, the colonies grew and expanded continuously to be in full growth (iprodione-growth, Ipr-G), suggesting Ipr-I may be a turning moment of the morphogenetic changes resisting fungicidal toxicity. Con-G formed multicellular conidia with cell walls and septa and intact dense cytoplasm. In Ipr-N, fungal sporulation was inhibited by forming mostly undeveloped unicellular conidia with degraded and necrotic cytoplasm. However, in Ipr-I, conspicuous cellular changes occurred during sporulation by forming multicellular conidia with double layered (thickened) cell walls and accumulation of proliferated lipid bodies in the conidial cytoplasm, which may inhibit the penetration of the fungicide into conidial cells, reducing fungicide-associated toxicity, and may be utilized as energy and nutritional sources, respectively, for the further fungal growth to form mature colonies as in Ipr-G that formed multicellular conidia with cell walls and intact cytoplasm with lipid bodies as in Con-G.
The fifty percent effective concentration (EC50) and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of iprodione on the resistant isolates of Alternaria mali obtained from infected leaves in Kyeongsan region ranged $550\~1,310{\mu}g/ml$ and $33,800-39,800{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Conidia germination of the resistant isolates reached $70\%$ on PSA added with iprodione, $500{\mu}g/ml$ When treated with $500{\mu}g/ml$ iprodione soon after the inoculation the diameters of lesions on apple fruits 7days after inoculation with the resistant isolates were 1.6-14.6mm but no lesions appeared on those inoculated with the sensitive isolates. A similar trend of responses with the sensitive isolates was shown to benomyl, chlorothalonil, garbenda, thiophanatemethyl and triademefon with the resistant isolates. One isolate among the resistant ones was cross resistance to captan and folpet that were effective to the sensitive isolates.
Seed decay of soybean caused by Diaporthe phaseolorum, Colletotrichum truncatum and Cercospora kikuchii is a serious disease when soybean is harvested under warm and wet weather conditions. Benomyl has been used for controlling the disease, however, benomyl application may be limited due to common occurrence of resistance. The efficacy of 21 fungicides against the pathogens was evaluated in vitro. Among the fungicides tested, benomyl, carbendazim, fluazinam, iprodione+propineb, thiophanate-methyl, and triflumizole were found effective and were evaluated for their ability to control the seed pathogens. Fluazinam completely inhibited mycelial growth at a concentration of 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}{\ell}$ for D. phaseolorum; and at a concentration of 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}{\ell}$ for C. truncatum and C. kikuchii. $EC_90$ values of fluazinam were similar to that of benomyl. Because fluazinam, iprodione+propineb, and triflumizole were found effective against the seed pathogens, these were subjected for field-testing. Suppression of pod and seed infection by fluazinam and iprodione+propineb was as high as that of benomyl without any reduction in agronomic characters of soybean. This study shows that fluazinam and iprodione+propineb may be used in combination with benomyl to control seed pathogens, manage resistance, and ensure production of high quality soybean seeds.
Monilina fructicola, the brown rot fungus of stone fruits, was isolated from overwintering mummies and peduncles on peach trees from February to March, 1998. The resistant population of these isolates to benzimidazole (benomyl, carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl) and dicarboximide (iprodione, vinclozolin and procymidone) was examined. Among 417 isolates, the incidence of isolates resistant to benomyl, carbendazim, and thiophanate-methyl were 45 (10.8%), 47 (11.3%), and 46 (11.0%), respectively. Forty two (10.0%) isolates showed cross-resistance to benzimidazole fungicides. On the other hand, the resistant isolates against iprodione, vinclozolin and procymidone were 186 (44.6%), 1 (0.2%) and 150 (36.0%), respectively. Among the isolates, 116 (27.8%) showed cross-resistance to iprodione and procymidone. Moreover, 27 (6.5%) of 417 isolates showed double-resistance to both benzimidazole (benomyl) and dicarboximide (iprodione).
Isoates with changed pathogenicity were selected among iprodione-resistant Alternaria mali to investigate any relationship between their pectolytie enzyme activity and pathogenicity. In artificial medium, strongly pathogenic isolates $S_1$, and $R_3$ showed higher enzyme activity than weakly pathogenic isolate $R_8$.Activity of endo-polymethylgalacturonase and end-o-polygalacturonase was more than 3 times. But activity of pectin methylesterase and pectin Iyase by isolaste $S_1$ was higher than those by $R_3$ and $R_8$ isolates. In apple medium dialyzed against distilled water, activity of enzyme by each isolate was increased but growth of each isolate was reduced. When iprodione was added to the medium, enzyme activity and growth of isolate $S_1$, were reduced but strongly pathogenic isolate .$R_3$ among iprodione-resistant ones showed increased enzyme activity except for exo-polygalacturonase in dialyzed apple medium.
We studied the residual patterns of two fungicides, dichlofluanid and iprodione, in cherry tomato greenhouse after applying with the recommended and double dose. Also, the degradation patterns during storage periods of up to ten days were compared between at room temperature (20$^{\circ}C$) and at cold temperature (4$^{\circ}C$). Removal rates of fungicides by washing with tap-water and detergent solution (0.1%, 0.2%) were measured. Half-lives of dichlofluanid and iprodione in greenhouse cherrytomato were 2.2$\sim$3.5 and 3.3$\sim$5.4 days, respectively. During the storage period, the residues were dissipated more slow. Removal rates were 62.8$\sim$80.3% by tap-water, 60.4$\sim$83.1% by 0.1% detergent solution, and 65.3$\sim$77.6% by 0.2% detergent solution. So, we can predict of terminal residues from cultivation period to marketing, storage and consuming.

A total of 24 isolates of S. homoeocarpa were isolated from 16 golf courses in Korea. Chemical resistance of 24 isolates was determined by in vitro fungal growth on fungicide-amended media with thiophanatemethyl (Benzimidazole fungicide family), tebuconazole (demethylation inhibitor fungicide family: DMI), and iprodione (dicarboximide fungicide family). Results indicated that 83.3% of 24 isolates were resistant to iprodione, 62.5% resistant to thiophanate-methyl and 0% resistant to tebuconazale. The dual resistance of iprodione and thiophanate-methyl was 58.3.%. Occurrence rate of fungicide resistance of thiophanate-methyl and iprodione had no relation to turfgrass varieties and isolated locations of pathogen. In the filed test, procymidone, boscalid, and fluquinconazole+pyrimethanil effectively controlled the dollar spot of creeping bentgrass.
