  • The optogalvanic effect is proposed and demonstrated as a technique for Penning ionization in a discharge of mixtures of metal vapors and rare gases. The gadolinium and argon mixture is used as a prototype. The lowest metastable of argon, 3P$_2$ (ls$\_$5/ in Paschen notation) at 93144 cm$\^$-1/, is within kT from the excited states of Gd ion. Thus Penning ionization occurs to an excited states of the ion. This process strongly alters the optogalvanic signal and has its own signatures.

  • During a major solar eruption, the erupting plasma is possibly out of the equilibrium ionization state because of its rapid heating or cooling. The non-equilibrium ionization process is important in a rapidly evolving system where the thermodynamical time scale is shorter than the ionization or recombination time scales. We investigate the effects of non-equilibrium ionization on EUV and X-ray observations by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board Solar Dynamic Observatory and X-ray Telescope (XRT) on board Hinode. For the investigation, first, we find the emissivities for all the lines of ions of elements using CHIANTI 8.07, and then we find the temperature responses multiplying the emissivities by the effective area for each AIA and XRT passband. Second, we obtain the ion fractions using a time-dependent ionization model (Shen et al. 2015), which uses an eigenvalue method, for all the lines of ion, as a function of temperature, and a characteristic time scale, $n_et$, where $n_e$ and t are density and time, respectively. Lastly, the ion fractions are multiplied to the temperature response for each passband, which results in a 2D grid for each combination of temperature and the characteristic time scale. This is the set of passband responses for plasma that is rapidly ionized in a current sheet or a shock. We investigate an observed event which has a relatively large uncertainty in an analysis using a differential emission measure method assuming equilibrium ionization state. We verify whether the observed coronal plasmas are in non-equilibrium or equilibrium ionization state using the passband responses.

  • Low temperature plasma (LTP) ionization mass spectrometry (MS) is one of the widely used ambient analysis methods which allows soft-ionization and rapid analysis of samples in ambient condition with minimal or no sample preparation. One of the major advantages of LTP MS is selective analysis of low-molecular weight, volatile and low- to medium-polarity analytes in a sample. On the contrary, the selectivity for particular class of compound also implies its limitation in general analysis. One of the critical factors limiting LTP ionization efficiency is poor desorption of analytes with low volatility. In this study, a home-built LTP ionization source with Peltier heating sample stage was constructed to enhance desorption and ionization efficiencies of analytes in a sample and its performance was evaluated using standard mixture containing fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs). It was also used to reproduce the previous bacterial identification experiment using pattern-recognition for FAEEs. Our result indicates, however, that the bacterial differentiation from FAEE pattern recognition using LTP ionization MS still has many limitations.

  • To establish the calibration system of hot cathode ionization gauges as transfer gauges, researches were concentrated on measurements of the pressure ratio, the orifice conductance as well as the porous plug conductance of a ultrahigh vacuum standards system. Two ionization gauges obtained from two different vendors were calibrated in the pressure range of $7{times}10^{-7}$ to $4{times}10^{-3}$ Pa by injecting argon gas into the standards system. As a result, a 4% difference was revealed in non-linearity of the extractor ionization gauge due to the pressure difference between high vacuum and ultrahigh vacuum, and 3% for the stabil ionization gauge. It has been understood that the extractor ionization gauge is able to be used within the 10% error, the uncertainty of the extractor ionization gauge, if properly regulating the sensitivity of the gas. The stabil ionization gauge was also proved to be useable in the maximum error margin of 4% without the control of the gas sensitivity.

  • The general aspects of Laser Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (RIS) and its application are investigated. Combination of laser selective photoionization and mass spectrometer as apromising spectroscopic as well as an analytical tool is mainly considered. The application of RIS includes mercury (Hg) atomic spectroscopy, trace analysis of lead (Pb) and resonance enhanced two photon ionization spectroscopy of Cis-hexatriene.

  • Sesamin, one of the lignans in sesame seed, was a labile compound in MS and it was reported that the protonated molecule of sesamin decomposed easily in ES ionization process and it cannot be detected (G. Yan, et al., Rapid Commun Mass Spectrom. 2007, 21, 3613-3620). To protect labile compounds, an amino-cyclodextrin (NCyD) was added to the sample to promote the host-guest interaction complex in ESI-MS. As a result, sesamin was ionized as the NCyD-sesamin-NCyD (1:2) complex without undesired decomposition, suggesting that the amino-CyDs assist the ionization of the labile molecules capped with CyDs by host-guest interaction and these compounds were ionized without their decomposition, those are like amino-CyD complex-assisted ionization. The amino-CyD complexes of sesamin and sesamolin were also analyzed by their ion-mobility MS.

  • Alkali metal salts were introduced to enhance the ionization efficiency of glucose and maltooligoses in electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). A mixture of the same moles of glucose, maltose, maltotriose, maltotetraose, maltopentaose, maltohexaose, and maltoheptaose was used. Salts of lithium, sodium, potassium, and cesium were employed as the cationizing agent. The ionization efficiency varied with the alkali metal cation types as well as the analyte sizes. Ion abundance distribution of the [M+$cation]^+$ ions of the carbohydrates varied with the fragmentor voltage. The maximum ion abundance at low fragmentor voltage was observed at maltose, while the maximum ion abundance at high fragmentor voltage shifted to maltotriose or maltotetraose for Na, K, and Cs. Variation of the ionization efficiency was explained with the hydrated cation size and the binding energy of the analyte and alkali metal cation.

  • In this study, we aimed to determine the optical properties of the plasma used for the dry cleaning method. The optical properties of the atmospheric pressure plasma device were measured through the degree of ionization of hydrogen or nitrogen gas by ionized atmospheric gas. The degree of ionization of hydrogen or nitrogen is closely associated with surface modification. We observed through our experiments that argon gas, an atmospheric gas, caused an increase in the ionization of nitrogen gas, which has similar ionization energy. This type of increase in nitrogen gas ions is believed to affect surface modification. The results of our study show that the pressure of argon gas and the partial pressure of argon and nitrogen gases lead to different results. This important result shows that argon ions can affect the ionization of nitrogen gas.
