  • Isothiazolinone derivatives are widely used in consumer products as disinfectants or preservatives, but there are growing concerns about their impact on human health. Therefore, rapid screening of these biocides is very important for proper control and regulation of potentially hazardous substances. To this end, low-temperature plasma (LTP) ionization mass spectrometry (MS) was investigated to demonstrate its potential for direct and selective analysis of isothiazolinones from sprayed aerosol samples. Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) was clearly identified from a commercial fabric deodorant using LTP ionization MS and MS/MS. LTP allowed selective ionization of BIT directly from the simply sprayed aerosol sample and illustrated its potential for fast screening without sample pre-treatments. Selective nature of LTP ionization, on the other hands, implicates use of LTP ionization MS as a general screening method for specific groups of hazardous chemicals in commercial products.

  • The field dependent characteristics of electron transport with GaAs impact ionization have been analyzed, using GaAa full band E-k relationship. The E-k relationship is derived from empirical pseudopotential method, using Fermi's golden rule and local form factor, and Brillouin zone is divided into tetrahedrons for calculating impact ionization rate, and tetrahedron method, in which integrates each tetrahedrons, is used. Monte Carlo simulation is used for analyzing anisotropy of impact ionization. A result of transient analysis for impact ionization has presented that anisotropy of impact ionization only arises during transient state and impact ionization is isotropic under steady state. Anisotropic characteristics of impact ionization for GaAs, which is presented in this paper, can be used in carrying out a transient analysis for GaAs devices.

  • Elementally Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching will be superior than Totally Chlorine free (TCF) bleaching, not only because they have no significant difference in effluent toxicity, but also those pulps bleached by ECF have higher brightness, strength, yield, etc., over those by TCF. With this belief, this paper focused on the chemistry of chlorine dioxide decomposition and ionization, both in water solution and in pulp slurry. Special attention was paid to chlorate ion because there have been controversies as how it is formed and what its behavior to the end pH of pulp bleaching is. As a result, during ionization of chlorine dioxide with water, both chlorate and chlorite were found to increase with increasing pH, but during ionization with pulp, chlorite was found to increase with end pH while chlorate decreased with increasing end pH. In the case of ionization with water, the disproportion equation $2CIO_2 + OH^{-} \lightarrow H_2O + CIO_3^{-} + CIO_2^{-}$ was thought to become the main reaction with the increasing pH, while in the case of ionization with pulp, the reaction $HCIO + CIO_2^{-}\lightarow H^{+} + Cl^{-} + CIO_3^{-}$ was the main reaction contributing to the formation of chlorate. Based on this above opinion, the contrary results of chlorine dioxide ionization from different researchers were discussed and explained.

  • The Impact ionization rate is highly anisotropic at low electron energy, while it becomes isotropic at higher energy range in which impact ionization events frequently accur. In this study, full energy band structure obtained by pseudopotential method and Fermi's golden rule is used to calculate impact ionization rate. The calculated impact ionization rate is well fitted to a modified Keldysh formular at 300K and 77K. Full band Monte Carlo simulator is made to investigate the validity of the GaAs impact ionization coefficients at 300K and 77K. Impart ionization process is isotropic under the condition of steady state since anisotrophy appears during very short time at look. Impart ionization coefficients is nearly constant and is anisotropic in electric field applied along the <110> direction at 77K.

  • As device dimensions are lastly scaled down, impact ionization(I.I.) events are very important to analyze hot carrier transport in high energy region, and the exact model of impact ionization is demanded on device simulation. We calculate full band model by empirical pseudopotential method and the impact ionization rate is derived from modified Keldysh formula. We calculate impact ionization coefficients by full band Monte Carlo simulator to investigate temperature dependent characteristics of impact ionization for GaAs as a function of field. Resultly impact ionization coefficients are in good agreement with experimental values at look. We how energy is increasing along increasing the field, while energy is decreasing along increasing the temperature since the phonon scattering rates for emission mode are very high at high temperature. The logarithmic fitting function of impact ionization coefficients is described as a second orders function of temperature and field. The residuals of the logarithmic fitting function are mostly within 5%. We Dow, therefore, the logarithm of impact ionization coefficients has quadratic dependence on temperature, and we can save time of calculating the temperature dependent impact ionization coefncients as a function of field.

  • In this study, we analyzed the values of ionization and ionization constants in the chemistry textbooks developed during 1945-2009 year. The chemistry teachers compared strength of strong acids in aqueous solution by questionnaire. In the questionnaire, we searched chemistry teachers' cognitions about the discordance reason of ionization constant formulation and the values in the textbooks. The subjects were 46 chemistry teachers. As results, the teachers compared the strength of strong acids in aqueous solution based on the ionization and ionization constant values in the textbooks. They didn't notice the problem of discordance of ionization constant formulation and the values in the textbooks. Even though they recognized the problem, they could not find the solution, and thought the problem arrived by experiment error or measurement error.

  • Mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectra of 2-hydroxypyridines existing as lactims (2-pyridinol) in a molecular beam are obtained via (1+1') two-photon process to give accurate ionization energies of 8.9344${\pm}$0.0005 and 8.9284${\pm}$0.0005 eV for 2-pyridinol (2Py-OH) and its deuterated analogue (2Py-OD), respectively. Resonantly-enhanced two-photon ionization spectra of these compounds are also presented to give vibrational structures of their $S_1$ states. Vibrational frequencies of 2Py-OH and 2Py-OD in ionic ground states are accurately determined from MATI spectra taken via various $S_1$ intermediate states, and associated vibrational modes are assigned with the aid of ab initio calculations.

  • A new method of knock detection in SI engines, using a change of ion concentration in the combustion chamber, was developed. In order to measure in-cylinder ionization current, ionization probes were installed at spark plug and cylinder head of production engine. It was found that the electric current generated by ionized gas in core burned gas region of knocking cycle is between 2 and 10 times larger than that of normal cycle, because the burned gas temperature which is the dominant parameter of a change of ion concentration increases. However, a change of ionization current in boundary region of burned gas is relatively weak. Hence a change of ion concentration in core burned gas region can be used for knock detection.
