Formate dehydrogenase (FDH), catalyzing the oxidation of the formate ion to carbon dioxide, is known as the stress protein in response to drought, low temperature and pathogen infection. To study the functions of FDH in poplar (Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa), we isolated a FDH cDNA (PagFDH1) and examined its expressional characteristics. The PagFDH1 is 1,499 base pairs long and encodes a putative 388 amino acid protein with an expected molecular mass of 42.5 kDa. The PagFDH1 protein has N-terminal mitochondria signal peptide and $NAD^+$ binding domain. Southern blot analysis indicated that a single copy of the PagFDH1 is present in the poplar genome. PagFDH1 is expressed highly in the suspension cells (especially in the lag and early exponential phases) and moderately in roots, flowers and leaves. ABA-mediated enhanced expression of PagFDH1 in response to drought and salt stress treatments indicates that the gene product could play an important role in the development of stress resistant trees.
Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute The observation of particles and waves using a single satellite inherently suffers from space-time ambiguity. Recently, such ambiguity has often been resolved by multi-satellite observations; however, the inter-satellite distances were generally larger than 100 km. Hence, the ambiguity could be resolved only for large-scale (> 100 km) structures while numerous microscale phenomena have been observed at low altitude satellite orbits. In order to resolve those spatial and temporal variations of the microscale plasma structures on the topside ionosphere, SNIPE mission consisted of four (TBD) nanosatellites (~10 kg) will be launched into a polar orbit at an altitude of 700 km (TBD). Two pairs of satellites will be deployed on orbit and the distances between each satellite will be from 10 to 100 km controlled by a formation flying algorithm. The SNIPE mission is equipped with scientific payloads which can measure the following geophysical parameters: density/temperature of cold ionospheric electrons, energetic (~100 keV) electron flux, and magnetic field vectors. All the payloads will have high temporal resolution (~ 16 Hz (TBD)). This mission is planned to launch in 2020. The SNIPE mission aims to elucidate microscale (100 m-10 km) structures in the topside ionosphere (below altitude of 1,000 km), especially the fine-scale morphology of high-energy electron precipitation, cold plasma density/temperature, field-aligned currents, and electromagnetic waves. Hence, the mission will observe microscale structures of the following phenomena in geospace: high-latitude irregularities, such as polar-cap patches; field-aligned currents in the auroral oval; electro-magnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves; hundreds keV electrons' precipitations, such as electron microbursts; subauroral plasma density troughs; and low-latitude plasma irregularities, such as ionospheric blobs and bubbles. We have developed a 6U nanosatellite bus system as the basic platform for the SNIPE mission. Three basic plasma instruments shall be installed on all of each spacecraft, Particle Detector (PD), Langmuir Probe (LP), and Scientific MAGnetometer (SMAG). In addition we now discuss with NASA and JAXA to collaborate with the other payload opportunities into SNIPE mission.
This study presented simple and efficient fabrication of chemical sensors for the detection of acidic gas using 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane as an indicator because it can be promising materials having property of the rapid color change according to the variation of pH. The dissociation of proton and dye in acidic condition as changing of ion pairs give rise to dramatically change the absorbance intensity of 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane, which can be easily applied to the development of chemical sensors. In addition, indicator dyes having negatively charge in aqueous phase can be easily fabricated using layer-by-layer (LBL) methods by way of electrostatic interaction. For the proof of concept, we demonstrated the abrupt presentation of skeleton symbol on the chemical sensor, which could be resulted from the reaction of 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane as background color with acidic gas. Thus, the rapid appearance of symbol will induce user's caution under the emergency condition. The presented chemical gas sensor using 1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane have strong advantages. First, the fabrication process of gas sensor was very simple and low-cost. Secondly, sensors reacted by acidic gas could be reused for several times. Finally, the chemical gas sensor would be environmentally friend, which can be a basic tool for the realization of eco-organic sensor device.

Amberlite XAD-7 and XAD-4 resins impregnated with DXHQ (5,7-dihalo-8-hydroxyquinoline) were prepared for the adsorption, separation and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The characteristics of the impregnated resins, DXHQ (X : Cl, Br, I)-XAD were studied to find out the proper pairs of resin and DXHQ for the adsorption of metal ions. The increasing order of the impregnated amount of DXHQ onto XAD-7 resin was as follows: DCHQ < DBHQ < DIHQ. It was observed from the plot of log $K_d$ vs. pH that the optimum pH range for the adsorption of DIHQ onto XAD-4 resin was from 3.0 to 7.0. The stabilities of the DXHQ-XAD resins were investigated by measuring the amount of DXHQ remained on the XAD resin after shaking the DXHQ-XAD resins in various solutions of pH ranging from 2 to 12 and hydrochloric acid solutions. The impregnated resins were considerably stable in both acidic and neutral solutions. The amount of DIHQ leached from DIHQ-XAD-4 resin by eluting with various HCl solutions (1 ∼ 5M) was negligible, but in the case of XAD-7 resin it increases as the concentration of HCl solution increases. The optimum pH ranges, absorption mole ratio (M : DXHQ) and adsorption capacities (mmol metal per gram of resin) for the adsorption of metal ions onto the DXHQ-XAD resins were determined respectively. The stability of metal ion absorbed by the DXHQ-XAD resins was observed as the following order: M-DCHQ-XAD-7 < M-DBHQ-XAD-7 < M-DIHQ-XAD-7. The adsorbed metal ions were quantitatively recovered by eluting with HCl (0.5 ∼ 5M) and DXHQ-XAD resins could be reused over 5 times without re-impregnation of DXHQ.

In this study, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was employed to detect 26 antidiabetic compounds in adulterated dietary supplements using a simple, selective method. The work presented herein may help prevent incidents related to food adulteration and restrict the illegal food market. The best separation was obtained on a Shiseido Capcell Pak(R) C18 MG-II ($2.0mm{\times}100mm$, $3{\mu}m$), which improved the peak shape and MS detection sensitivity of the target compounds. A gradient elution system composed of 0.1 % (v/v) formic acid in distilled water and methanol at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min for 18 min was utilized. A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with an electrospray ionization source operated in the positive or negative mode was employed as the detector. The developed method was validated as follows: specificity was confirmed in the multiple reaction monitoring mode using the precursor and product ion pairs. For solid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL, and for liquid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL. Satisfactory linearity was obtained from calibration curves, with $R^2$ > 0.99. Both intra and inter-day precision were less than 13.19 %. Accuracies ranged from 80.69 to 118.81 % (intra/inter-day), with a stability of less than 14.88 %. Mean recovery was found to be 80.6-119.0 % and less than 13.4 % RSD. Using the validated method, glibenclamide and pioglitazone were simultaneously determined in one capsule at concentrations of 1.52 and 0.53 mg (per capsule), respectively.

Nanometric crystalline silicon (no-Si) embedded in dielectric medium has been paid attention as an efficient light emitting center for more than a decade. In nc-Si, excitonic electron-hole pairs are considered to attribute to radiative recombination. However the surface defects surrounding no-Si is one of non-radiative decay paths competing with the radiative band edge transition, ultimately which makes the emission efficiency of no-Si very poor. In order to passivate those defects - dangling bonds in the $Si:SiO_2$ interface, hydrogen is usually utilized. The luminescence yield from no-Si is dramatically enhanced by defect termination. However due to relatively high mobility of hydrogen in a matrix, hydrogen-terminated no-Si may no longer sustain the enhancement effect on subsequent thermal processes. Therefore instead of easily reversible hydrogen, phosphorus was introduced by ion implantation, expecting to have the same enhancement effect and to be more resistive against succeeding thermal treatments. Samples were Prepared by 400 keV Si implantation with doses of $1\times10^{17}\;Si/cm^2$ and by multi-energy Phosphorus implantation to make relatively uniform phosphorus concentration in the region where implanted Si ions are distributed. Crystalline silicon was precipitated by annealing at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in Ar environment and subsequent annealing were performed for an hour in Ar at a few temperature stages up to $1,000^{\circ}C$ to show improved thermal resistance. Experimental data such as enhancement effect of PL yield, decay time, peak shift for the phosphorus implanted nc-Si are shown, and the possible mechanisms are discussed as well.
