Lithium ion batteries are found to have wide range of applications in variety of mobile devices ranging from simple toys to electric vehicles. The performance of these batteries depends on the choice of constituent materials. In this lecture, the materials aspects and perspectives of the electrode batteries will be discussed. Results from some of the specific studies made at speaker's laboratory will be presented.
Air-cooled slag showed grindability approximately twice as good as that of water-cooled slag. While the studied water-cooled slag was composed of glass as constituent mineral, the air-cooled slag was mainly composed of melilite. It is assumed that the sulfur in air-cooled slag is mainly in the form of CaS, which is oxidized into $CaS_2O_3$ when in contact with air. $CaS_2O_3$, then, is released mainly as $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ion when in contact with water. However, the sulfur in water-cooled slag functioned as a constituent of the glass structure, so the$S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion was not released even when in contact with water. When no chemical admixture was added, the blended cement of air-cooled slag showed higher fluidity and retention effect than those of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. It seems that these discrepancies are caused by the initial hydration inhibition effect of cement by the $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion of air-cooled slag. When a superplasticizer is added, the air-cooled slag used more superplasticizer than did the blast furnace slag for the same flow because the air-cooled slag had higher specific surface area due to the presence of micro-pores. Meanwhile, the blended cement of the air-cooled slag showed a greater fluidity retention effect than that of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. This may be a combined effect of the increased use of superplasticizer and the presence of released $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion; however, further, more detailed studies will need to be conducted.
As an energetic focused-ion beam(FIB) is irradiated on an inorganic amorphous thin film a majority of ions without a reflection at surface, is randomly collided with constituent atoms in thin film. but their distribution exhibits generally a systematic form of distribution. In our previous paper we reported the concentration distribution and the transmission per unit depth of Ga$^{+}$ ions penetrated int a-Se$_{75}$ /Ge$_{25}$ thin film using the LSS-based calculation. In this paper these simulated results are compared with those obtained by a conventional profile code(ISC) and a practical SIMS profile. Then the results of LSS-based calculation have only a small difference with those of code and SIMS Especially. in the case of Ga$^{+}$-FIB with an accelerating energy of 15keV. the depth of the maximum ion concentration is coincident with each other in an error range of $\pm$5$\AA$.EX>.

Phase intergrowth in BSCCO thin films has been Investigated. It turfed out from XRD analyses of these phases that molar fraction of each constituent phase in the intergrowth thin film can be exhibited as a function of substrate temperature and ozone pressure. Super- conducting behavior of the intergrowth thin aim Is also discussed.
The study was conducted to investigate the removal of heavy metals by using Hydroxyapatite(HAp) made from waste oyster shells and wastewater with high concentration of phosphorus. The maximum calcium concentration for the production of HAp in this study was released up to 361 mg/L at pH of 3 by elution experiments. When the pH was at adjusted 6, the maximum calcium released concentration was 41 mg/L. During the elution experiment, most of the calcium was released within 60 minutes. This reaction occurred at both pH levels of 3 and 6. The result of the XRD analysis for the HAp product used in this study shows the main constituent was HAp, as well as OCP. The pH was 8.6. As the temperature increased, the main constituent did not vary, however its structure was crystallized. When the pH was maintained at 3, the removal efficiency decreased as the heavy metal concentration increased. The order of removal efficiency was as follows: $Fe^{2+}$(92%), $Pb^{2+}$(92%) > $Cu^{2+}$(20%) > $Cd^{2+}$(0%). Most of these products were dissolved and did not produce sludge in the course of heavy metals removal. As the heavy metal concentration increased at pH of 6, the removal efficiency increased. The removal efficiencies in all heavy metals were over 80%. From the analysis of the sludge after reaction with heavy metals, the HAp was detected and the OCP peak was not observed. Moreover, lead ion was observed at the peaks of lead-Apatite and lead oxidant. In the case of cadmium, copper and iron ions, hydroxide forms of each ion were also detected.
Intensive theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out at Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) on controlling the bio absorbing rate of the Mg alloys with high mechanical strength through tailoring of electrochemical potential. Key technology for retarding the corrosion of the Mg alloys is to equalize the corrosion potentials of the constituent phases in the alloys, which prevented the formation of Galvanic circuit between the constituent phases resulting in remarkable reduction of corrosion rate. By thermodynamic consideration, the possible phases of a given alloy system were identified and their work functions, which are related to their corrosion potentials, were calculated by the first principle calculation. The designed alloys, of which the constituent phases have similar work function, were fabricated by clean melting and extrusion system. The newly developed Mg alloys named as KISTUI-MG showed much lower corrosion rate as well as higher strength than previously developed Mg alloys. Biocompatibility and feasibility of the Mg alloys as orthopedic implant materials were evaluated by in vitro cell viability test, in vitro degradation test of mechanical strength during bio-corrosion, in vivo implantation and continuous observation of the implant during in vivo absorbing procedures. Moreover, the cells attached on the Mg alloys was observed using cryo-FIB (focused ion beam) system without the distortion of cell morphology and its organ through the removal of drying steps essential for the preparation of normal SEM/TEM samples. Our Mg alloys showed excellent biocompatibility satisfying the regulations required for biomedical application without evident hydrogen evolution when it implanted into the muscle, inter spine disk, as well as condyle bone of rat and well contact interface with bone tissue when it was implanted into rat condyle.
The perovskites in the $LaAlO_3-BaZrO_3$ system (i.e., $(1-x)LaAlO_3-xBaZrO_3$ were fabricated by a solid state reaction and their dielectric properties were investigated. For the compositions of x=0.1~0.9, the mixture of $LaAlO_3$ with a rhombohedral structure and $BaZrO_3$ with a cubic was observed when the sintering was conducted at $1500^{\circ}C$, indicating that the solubility of constituent elements was very low and a narrow solid solution region might exist. The large difference of ionic radii between $La^{3+}$ ion (0.136nm, C.N.=12) and $Ba^{2+}$ ion (0.161nm) or $Al^{3+}$ ion (0.0535nm, C.N.=6) and $Zr^{4+}$ ion (0.072nm) might hinder the mutual substitution. Within the compositions of x=0~0.7, the dielectric constant of the mixture increased with the amount of $BaZrO_3$, i.e., x value, which was in good agreement with the logarithmic mixing rule (In $_{r,i}={\Sigma}v_iln\;_{r,i}$). The increase in $BaZrO_3$ doping decreased $Q{\times}f$ value significantly due to the low $Q{\times}f$ value of $BaZrO_3$ itself, a poor microstructure of the mixture with an increased grain boundary area per volume, and defects in the cation and oxygen sub-lattices which were respectively caused by the evaporation of barium during the sintering process and the substitution of Ba on La-site or Al on Zr-site.
In order to design capacity of lithium ion battery, some calculations were carried out based on the characteristics of materials by the given battery shape and dimension. The principle of design was built by the interpretation of the correlation of material, electrochemical and battery factors. Parameters of materials are fundamental physical properties of constituent such as cathode. separator, anode, current collectors and electrolyte. Electrochemical factor includes potential pattern as a function of specific capacity, specific discharge capacity(or initial irreversible specific capacity or Ah efficiency) as a function of specific charge capacity and material balancing. Parameters of battery are dimension, construction hardware and performance. Battery capacity was simulated for a lithium cobalt dioxide as cathode and a hard carbon as anode to achieve 1100 mAh for the charge limit voltage of 4.2V, the weight ratio(+/-) of 2.4 and ICR18650. A fabricated test cell (ICR18650) which have weight ratio(+/-) of 2.4 discharged to 1093 mAh for the charge limit voltage of 4.2V. The sequential discharge capacity show good correspondence with designed capacity.
The purpose of this study is to research and develop solid polymer electrolyte(SPE) for Li polymer battery. The temperature dependence of conductivity, impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical properties of PMMA/PVDF electrolytes as a function of a mixed ratio were reported for PMMA/PVDF based polymer electrolyte films, which were prepared by thermal gellification method of preweighed PMMA/PVDF, plasticizer and Li salt. The ion conductivity of PMMA/PVDF electrolytes was 10$\^$-3/S/cm, which may be applicable to a constituent of lithium secondary battery. 5PMMA20PVDFLiC1O$_4$PC$\sub$8/EC$\sub$8/ electrolyte remains stable up to 5V vs. Li/Li$\^$+/. Steady state current method and AC impedance were used for the determination of transference numbers in PMMA/PVDF electrolyte film. The transference number of 5PMMA20PVDFLiC1O$_4$PC$\sub$8/EC$\sub$8/ electrolyte is 0.55.
