  • A series of activated carbons were prepared from coconut shells and coal-tar pitch binder by physical activation with steam in this study. The effect of variable processes such as activation temperature, activation time and ratio of mixing was investigated for optimizing those preparation parameters. The activation processes were carried out continuously. The nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K on pellet-shaped activated carbons show the same trend of Type I by IUPAC classification. The average pore sizes were about 19-21${\AA}$. The specific surface areas ($S_{BET}$) of pellet typed ACs increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. Specific surface area of AC treated for 90 min at temperature $900^{\circ}C$ was 1082 $m^2/g$. The methylene blue numbers continuously increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. On the other hand, iodine numbers highly increased till activation time of 60 min, but the rate of increase of iodine numbers decreased after that time. This indicates that new micropores were created and the existing micropores turned into mesopores and macropores because of increased reactivity of carbon surface and $H_2O$.

  • The surface modified activated carbons (SMACs) were prepared with various $P_2O_5$ concentrations using two activated carbons (ACs: waste citrus peel-based activated carbon and coconut-based activated carbon). The characteristics and adsorptivity of bisphenol A (one of phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals) were compared between ACs and SMACs. The contents of C, H and N of SMACs were similar to those of ACs, but the content of $P_2O_5$ for the former increased greatly than for the latter, due to the impregnation of $P_2O_5$ into the pores. The specific surface area, total pore volume, average pore diameter and iodine adsorptivity for the former decreased due to the impregnation of $P_2O_5$ into the pores, compared to those for the latter. The adsorptivity of bisphenol A for the former were higher than that for the latter, although specific surface area, total pore volume, average pore diameter and iodine adsorptivity for the former were lower than those for the latter.

  • Among the radioactive wastes generated from the nuclear power plant, a radioactive nuclide such as $^{129}I$ is classified as a difficult-to-measure (DTM) nuclide, owing to its low specific activity. Therefore, the establishment of an analytical procedure, including a chemical separation for $^{129}I$ as a representative DTM, becomes essential. In this report, the adsorption and recovery rate were measured by adding $^{125}I$ as a radio-isotopic tracer ($t_{1/2}$ = 60.14 d) to the simulation sample, in order to measure the activity concentration of $^{129}I$ in a pressurized-water reactor primary coolant. The optimum condition for the maximum recovery yield of iodine on the anion exchange resins (AG1 x2, 50-100 mesh, $Cl^-$ form) was found to be at pH 7. In this report, the effect of the boron content in a pressurized-water reactor primary coolant on the separation process of $^{129}I$ was examined, as was the effect of $^3H$ on the measurement of the activity of iodine. As a result, no influence of the boron content and of the simultaneous $^3H$ presence was found with activity concentrations of $^3H$ lower than 50 Bq/mL, and with a boron concentration of less than 2,000 ${\mu}g/mL$.

  • One of the objectives of this study were to develop a process for manufacturing activated carbons from agricultural by-products(rice shells and saw dust) and another is to measure the iodine number, ash content and removal ratio of COD. The other is to compare those values with those of commercialized activated carbons. Agricultural by-products based activated carbons were manufactured through the steam-reaction method. A rotary kiln type furnace was used for both carbonization and activation. The optimum operating temperatures for carbonization and activation were $650^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$, respectively. For the activated carbons produced under these conditions, the iodine number was 1,127mg/g. Especially, removal efficiency of COD was 61.5% for 40mg/L of wastewater and 30% for 150mg/L of SLS(Sodium Lauryl Sulfate).

  • This study was devoted to the manufacturing process of activated carbon(AC) using and anthracite and bituminous coals which were regarded as appropriate for AC manufacturing, and the physcial properties a AC prepared with coal blends were characterized by the ultimate and proximate analysis. Generally, as the fraction of antheracite in AC from anthracite and bituminous coal blends was increased, AC yield was increased whereas iodine value($I_2$) was decreased. Being not related to mixing ratio of coal blends, the apparent density of AC remained constant. Pore development and iodine value of AC based on coal blends(Fushun and Dandong, 75:25 wt. %) were examined, varing carbonization and steam activation conditions. These results showed that the average pore diameter of AC was below $20{\AA}$ in the activation temperature range of 850 to $900^{\circ}C$ and the iodine value was above $1000m^2/g$. When the adsorption capacity of manufactured AC was compared with commercial AC, it is found that the AC from coal blends was comparable to the commercial AC. Therefore, it was confirmed that the characteristics of manufactured AC were changed with manufacturing conditions and the ratios and types of coal blends.

  • Activated Carbon Fibers (ACFs) are widely used as adsorbents in technologies related to pollution abatement due to their highly porous structure and large adsorption capacity. The porous structure and surface area of ACFs depends strongly on both the activation processes arid the nature .of the precursors. The chemical activation with hydroxides has recently been, of great interest as it permits the preparation of activated carbon fibers with highly developed porosity. In this work, OXI-PAN fiber used as precursor for the preparation of activated carbon fibers by chemical activation with KOH and NaOH. The affects of several activation conditions on the surface properties, pore size distribution and adsorption capacity of Ag ion and Iodine ion on ACFs studied.

  • Coal tar pitch was chemically modified with 10 wt% benzoquinone (BQ) to raise the softening point of isotropic pitch precursor and the precursor was melt-spun into pitch fibers, stabilized, carbonized and activated with steam at $900^{\circ}C$. The weight loss of carbon fiber-benzoquinone (CF-BQ) increased with the increase of activation time like other fibers, but was lower than those of Kureha fiber at the same activation time in spite of larger geometric surface area. Those adsorption isotherms fitted into 'Type I' according to Brunauer, Deming, Deming and Teller classification. However, there was very thin low-pressure hysteresis that lower closure points of the hysteresis are about 0.42-0.45. From the pore size distribution curves, there might be some micropores having narrow-necked bottle; a series of interconnected pore is more likely than discrete bottles. FT-IR studies showed that the functional groups such as carboxyl, quinone, and phenol were introduced to ACFs-BQ surface after steam activation. Methylene blue decolorization and iodine adsorption capacity of ACF-BQ increased linearly with the increase of specific surface area and was larger than that of ACF-Kureha at the same specific surface area.

  • Activated carbon is amorphous and its intraparticle pores are well developed. Thus it has high adsorption capabilities and catalytic effect, and is utilized in many areas of industries such as food processing. In recent years, the demand of activated carbon has been increased to solve the environmental problems-waste treatment and removal of poisonous gas. Therefore, in this study an activated carbon was made using the waste and then the industrial characteristics of the produced activated carbon were investigated. The result showed that the carbonization yield was decreased when carbonization temperature was increased from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$ and that the optimal carbonization temperature was $500^{\circ}C$. The optimal concentration of NaOH for removing ash in the raw sample was 1~2N. The iodine adsorption of activated carbon using waste sample at $500^{\circ}C$ carbonization was 1204.28mg/g. The activation result of carbonization sample showed that the optimal activation condition was the carbonization at $500^{\circ}C$ and the activation at $800^{\circ}C$. So the production of activated carbon was thought to be possible, reused as resource, and decreased the environmental pollution.

  • Metal free phthalocyanine($H_2Pc$) partially doped with iodine, $H_2Pc(I)x$, has been made to improve photosensitizing efficiency of ZnO/$H_2Pc$. The content of iodine dopant level(x) for $H_2Pc(I)x$ upon $H_2Pc$ polymorphs was characterized as ${\chi}-H_2Pc(I)_{0.92}$ and ${\beta}-H_2Pc(I)_{0.96}$ by elemental analysis. Characterization of iodine-oxidized $H_2Pc$ were investigated by TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), UV-Vis, FT-IR, Raman and ESR (electron spin resonance) spectrum, and the adsorption properties of $H_2Pc(I)x$ on ZnO were characterized by means of Raman and ESR studies. TGA for $H_2Pc(I)x$ showed a complete loss of iodine at approximately 265$^{\circ}C$ and the Raman spectrum of $H_2Pc(I)x$ and ZnO/$H_2Pc(I)x$ at 514.5 nm showed characteristic $I_3^-$ patterns in the frequency region 90∼550 $cm^{-1}$. ZnO/$H_2Pc(I)x$ exhibited a very intense and narrow ESR signal at $g=2.0025{\pm}0.0005$ compared to $H_2Pc$/ZnO. Iodine doped ZnO/$H_2Pc(I)x$ showed a better photosensitivity compared to iodine undoped ZnO/$H_2Pc$. That is, the surface photovoltage of ${\chi}-H_2Pc(I)_{0.92}$/ZnO was approximately 31 times greater than that of ZnO/${\chi}-H_2Pc$ and ZnO/${\beta}-H_2Pc(I)_{0.96}$ was 5 times more efficient than ZnO/${\beta}-H_2Pc$ at 670 nm. And the dependence of photosensitizing effect upon $H_2Pc$ polymorphs was exhibited that the surface photovoltage of ZnO/${\chi}-H_2Pc(I)_{0.92}$ was approximately 5 times greater than ZnO/${\beta}-H_2Pc(I)_{0.96}$ at 670 nm. Therefore Iodine doping of H_2Pc$ resulted in increase in photoconductivity of $H_2Pc$ and photovoltaic effect of ZnO/$H_2Pc$ in the visible region.

  • Desorption reaction characteristics of the commercial activated carbons which were used for the removal of industrial odorants were investigated. BET specific surface area was analyzed to investigate the chemicophysical property of activated carbon. Adsorptivity of activated carbon was estimated by iodine number. Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) was used to investigate the desorption characteristics. Activation energies and reaction orders for reaction characteristics according to adsorption and desorption of activated carbons were estimated by employing the Friedman method and Freeman-Carroll method. Adsorptivity of reprocessed activated carbons were significantly lower than that of fresh activated carbons. In this study, it was found that the activation energies were 15.9~23.4 kJ/mol in Friedman method and 22.7~33.8 kJ/mol in Freeman-Carroll method.
