The further improvement of submarine propulsion is associated with the modularity of accumulator-fed inverters, such as cascaded inverters (CIs). CI technology guarantees smooth output voltages with reduced switch frequencies under linear loads. However, the output voltages of CIs are distorted under rectifier loads. This distortion requires harmonic suppression technology. One such technology is the repetitive controller (RC), which is commonly applied but suffers from poor performance in propulsion systems. In this study, the FFT spectrum of a CI under rectifier load is analyzed, and the harmonic contents are uneven in magnitude. For the purpose of harmonic suppression, the control gains at each harmonic frequency should be seriously considered. A RC with a specific harmonic gain compensation (SHGC) for CIs is proposed. This method provides additional control gains at low-order harmonic frequencies, which are difficult to achieve with conventional RCs. This SHGC consists of a band-pass filter (BPF) and proportional element and is easy to implement. These features make the proposed method suitable for submarine propulsion. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the improved RC.
Voltage feed-forward control (VFFC) is widely used in LCL-type grid-tied inverters due to its advantages in terms of disturbance rejection performance and fast dynamic response. However, VFFC may worsen the stability of inverters under weak grid conditions. It is revealed in this paper that a large phase-lag in the low-frequency range is introduced by VFFC, which reduces the phase margin significantly and leads to instability. To address this problem, a novel virtual-impedance-based control, where a phase-lead is introduced into the low-frequency area to compensate for the phase lag caused by VFFC, is proposed to improve system stability. The proposed control is realized with a high-pass filter, without high-order-derivative components. It features easy implementation and good noise immunity. A detailed design procedure for the virtual impedance control is presented. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the control proposed.

Microgrid, which can be considered as an integration of various dispersed resources (DRs), is characterized by number of DRs interfaced through the power electronics converters. The microgrid comprising these DRs is often operated in an islanded mode. To minimize the cost, reduce complexity and increase reliability, it is preferred to avoid any communication channel between them. Consequently, the droop control method is traditionally adopted to distribute active and reactive power among the DRs operating in parallel. However, the accuracy of distribution of active and reactive power among the DRs controlled by the conventional droop control approach is highly dependent on the value of line impedance, R/X i.e., resistance to reactance ratio of the line, voltage setting of inverters etc. The limitations of the conventional droop control approach are demonstrated and a modified droop control approach to reduce the effect of impedance mis-match and improve the time response is proposed. The error in reactive power sharing is minimized by inserting virtual impedance in line with the inverters to remove the mis-match in impedance. The improved time response is achieved by modifying the real-power frequency droop using arctan function. Simulations results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the control approach.

This study proposes a circulating current reduction method that uses high-frequency voltage compensation when carrier phase difference occurs between two inverters in MSIS. In MSIS, inverters are configured in parallel to increase power capacity and to increase efficiency by using inverters only as needed. However, in the parallel inverter structure, circulating current is inevitably generated. Circulating current increases the stress on the switch, adversely affects the current control performance, and renders load sharing difficult. The proposed method compensates for the output voltage reference of the slave module by using the high-frequency voltage so that the switching pattern of each module is matched even in asynchronous carriers. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulations and experiments with 600 W IPMSM.
This paper presents the parameter measurement methods for high performance drive of induction motors, which are suitable for the self-commissioning function of commercial inverters. In this study, some factors that affect the accuracy of parameter measurement are examined. Measuring methods and conditions that are best fit to each parameter measurement procedure are then proposed. All the measurement procedures can be done without any auxiliary equipment, so that those can be easily adopted as self-commissioning functions of commercial inverters. To improve the measuring accuracy, least square approximation methods are adopted during the measurement procedure. The validity of the proposed methods are confirmed through experiments.
This paper presents a systematic approach to study the carrier based pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques applied to diode-clamped and cascade multilevel inverters by using multi-modulating patterns. This method is based on the description of controllable redundant parameters in the modulating signals. A unified mathematical formulation is presented for carrier based PWM methods, which obtains outputs similar to the corresponding space vector PWM. A full and separate control of the fundamental voltage, vector redundancies and phase redundancies can be obtained in the carrier based PWM. In this paper, the proposed PWM method and corresponding algorithm for generating multi-modulating signals will be formulated and demonstrated by our simulations.
A modular three-phase multilevel inverter especially suitable for electrical drive applications has been previously presented. This topology is based on series connection of power cells in which each cell comprised of two inverter legs in series. In this paper, in order to generate the maximum number of voltage levels with reduced number of switches, three algorithms are proposed for determination of the magnitudes of dc voltage sources. In addition, a new hybrid multilevel inverter is proposed that is composed of series connection of the previously presented multilevel inverter and some H-bridges. The proposed topology has been compared with some other presented multilevel inverters. The performance of the proposed multilevel inverter has been verified by simulation and experimental results of a single-phase 39-level multilevel inverter.

This paper investigates the droop control of parallel inverters for an islanded mode of microgrid. Frequency and voltage droop control is one of power control and load demand sharing methods. However, although the active power is properly shared, the reactive power sharing is inaccurate with conventional method due to the unequal line impedances and the power coupling of active - reactive power. In order to solve this problem, an improved droop method with virtual inductor concept and a voltage and current controller properly designed have been considered and analyzed through the PSiM simulation. The performance of improved droop method is analyzed in not only low-voltage line but also medium voltage line.
Recently, AC variable-speed motors are used for many steel rolling mill drive systems, because of their low maintenance and enhanced control performance. We have been applied GTO inverters for these AC motor drive systems since 1993. We have developed world largest 6-inch diameter GTO and large capacity 3-level GTO inverter up to 20000(kVA). As an example, in this paper, we describe the main circuit, system arrangement and control features of the 6-inches GTO inverters to drive rougher mills for hot strip mill of Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. The motor capacity is 6000(kW), and it's overload is 250(%).
A control scheme for stand-alone inverters that utilizes an inductor current observer (ICO) is proposed. The proposed method measures disturbance load currents using a current sensor and it estimates the inductor current using the ICO. The filter parameter mismatch effect is analyzed to confirm the ICO's controllability. The ICO and controllers are designed in a continuous-time domain and transferred to a discrete-time domain with a digital delay. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the ICO using a 5-kVA single-phase stand-alone inverter prototype. The experimental results demonstrate that the observed current matches the actual current and that the proposed method can archive a less than 2.4% total harmonic distortion (THD) sinusoidal output waveform under nonlinear load conditions.
