This case report presents results for gingival recession coverage following gingival grafting and for gingival biotype enhancements by visualizing soft tissue volume changes using intraoral three-dimensional scanning. A 28 year old female patient with multiple gingival recessions and a 19 year old female patient with a single gingival recession on mandibular anterior area were treated. Root coverage was performed in both cases using autogenous subepithelial connective tissue harvested from palate. Intraoral 3D scan data were obatained presurgery and at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years postsurgery. The recession areas were recovered successfully by subepithelial connective tissue graft combined with pedicle flap repositioning, and the patients showed neither further recurrence nor post-operative complication. Soft tissue biotype changes were identified by superimposing and analyzing scan data, revealing that gingival biotype was enhanced in both cases. These cases suggest that SCTG could be advantageous in terms of the gingival biotype enhancement, as well as gingival recession coverage, and intraoral 3D scanning might be suitable for assessing post-surgical gingival biotype change.

Individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection present with unique intraoral manifestations of various neoplasms. Intraoral HIV-associated Burkitt's lymphoma is a rare presentation, especially in patients of Indian origin and may present as an initial sign of HIV. The objective of this paper is to report a rare case of Burkitt's lymphoma in an HIV-positive Indian patient along with a special emphasis on differential diagnosis. A 30-year-old Indian female presented with a solitary, well-defined, exophytic mass extending anteroposteriorly and buccolingually from the 35th to 38th regions with no evidence of intraosseous extension. An incisional biopsy was performed, and histopathology showed sheets of neoplastic lymphoid cells with numerous tingible body macrophages with clear cytoplasm, presenting a starry sky appearance, suggesting a diagnosis of BL. The tumor cells were positive for CD10, CD20, c-myc, and Epstein-Barr virus, with a nearly 100% Ki-67 proliferative index. The patient tested positive for HIV. This report indicates the importance of immunohistochemical analysis to differentiate Burkitt's lymphoma from other similar lesions like diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Thorough knowledge of the clinical presentation, etiopathogenesis, histopathology, and immunoprofile of intraoral HIV-associated Burkitt's lymphoma is essential among clinicians and pathologists.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of three intraoral scanner (IOS) systems with three different dental arch widths. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three dental models with different intermolar widths (small, medium, and large) were attached to metal bars of different lengths (30, 40, and 50 mm). The bars were measured with a coordinate measuring machine and used as references. Three IOSs were compared: TRIOS 3 (TRI), True Definition (TD), and Dental Wings (DW). The relative length and angular deviation of both ends of the metal bars from the scan data set (n = 15) were calculated and analyzed. RESULTS. Comparing among scanners in terms of trueness, the relative length deviation of DW in the small (1.28%) and medium (1.08%) arches were significantly higher than TRI (0.46% and 0.48%) and TD (0.33% and 0.18%). The angular deviation of DW in the small (1.75°) and medium (1.83°) arches were also significantly greater than TRI (0.63° and 0.40°) and TD (0.55° and 0.89°). Comparing within scanner, the large arch of DW showed better accuracy than other arch sizes (P < .05). On the other hand, the larger arch of TD presented a greater tendency of angular deviation in terms of trueness. No significant differences were found in terms of trueness between the arch widths of TRI group. CONCLUSION. The different widths of the dental arches can affect the accuracy of some intraoral scanners in full arch scan.
PURPOSE. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of 14 different intraoral scanners for the All-on-4 treatment concept. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four implants were placed in regions 13, 16, 23, and 26 of an edentulous maxillary model that was poured with scannable Type 4 gypsum to imitate the All-on-4 concept. The cast was scanned 10 times for each of 14 intraoral scanners (Primescan, iTero 2, iTero 5D, Virtuo Vivo, Trios 3, Trios 4, CS3600, CS3700, Emerald, Emerald S, Medit i500, BenQ BIS-I, Heron IOS, and Aadva IOS 100P) after the polyether ether ketone scanbody was placed. For the control group, the gypsum model was scanned 10 times with an industrial scanner. The first of the 10 virtual models obtained from the industrial model was chosen as the reference model. For trueness, the data of the 14 dental scanners were superimposed with the reference model; for precision, the data of all 14 scanners were superimposed within the groups. Statistical analyses were performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilks, and Dunn's tests. RESULTS. Primescan showed the highest trueness and precision values (P < .005), followed by the iTero 5D scanner (P < .005). CONCLUSION. Some of these digital scanners can be used to make impressions within the All-on-4 concept. However, the possibility of data loss due to artifacts, reflections, and the inability to combine the data should be considered.
Distraction osteogenesis is applied to correct mandible or maxilla deformities. Owing to the distractor being away from the skin, it is not aesthetic. Infection can arise due to manual part. And therefore, it is necessary to make the distractor using a new mechanism. 3D software was used for the intraoral distractor modeling. 3D meshes were used to analyze the stress distribution of the distractor was analyzed using Finite element analysis software. This research developed a intraoral distractor for continuous mandible distraction through convergence study. Base on the results, it provide helpful data for future version of the wireless intraoral distractor in other fields of bio and medical engineering.
Background and Objectives : Traditionally, the excision of submandibular gland (SMG) has been commonly used for treatment of calculi in the proximal duct or gland parenchyma. Over the last 10 years several new minimally invasive techniques including lithotripsy, sialendoscope were introduced in the treatment of sialolithiasis. But these have some limitation on large, infected calculi. The aim of this study is to assess the intraoral treatment of submadibular stones. Subjects and Method : The records of one hundred and seventy-three patients who underwent intraoral removal of submadibular sialolithiasis between June 1, 1989 and July 31, 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. Results : Stone location was distal to the edge of the mylohyoid muscle in 127 patients and proximal to gland in 48 patients (mean size of sialoliths, 7.1mm [range 3.0-25mm]). The complete removal of stones was observed in 170 (97.1%) patients regardless of size and location. Recurrence of lithiasis was found in 8 patients (then treated with intraoral removal in 5 patientsand resection of SMG (submandibular glands) in 3 patients). Acalculous sialadenitis in 9 patients (5.1%) and cyst formation in 2 patients (1.1%) was found. But no evidence of postoperative complications including hemorrhage, fistula, damage to lingual nerve were found. Conclusion : The intraoral removal of submandibular stone is useful in preservation of submandiblar function and effective in palpable stones regardless of location, size.

Purpose: This study was performed to quantify the repeat rate of imaging acquisitions based on different clinical examinations, and to assess the prevalence of error types in intraoral bitewing and periapical imaging using a digital complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor(CMOS) intraoral sensor. Materials and Methods: A total of 8,030 intraoral images were retrospectively collected from 3 groups of undergraduate clinical dental students. The type of examination, stage of the procedure, and reasons for repetition were analysed and recorded. The repeat rate was calculated as the total number of repeated images divided by the total number of examinations. The weighted Cohen's kappa for inter- and intra-observer agreement was used after calibration and prior to image analysis. Results: The overall repeat rate on intraoral periapical images was 34.4%. A total of 1,978 repeated periapical images were from endodontic assessment, which included working length estimation (WLE), trial gutta-percha (tGP), obturation, and removal of gutta-percha (rGP). In the endodontic imaging, the highest repeat rate was from WLE (51.9%) followed by tGP (48.5%), obturation (42.2%), and rGP (35.6%). In bitewing images, the repeat rate was 15.1% and poor angulation was identified as the most common cause of error. A substantial level of intra- and inter-observer agreement was achieved. Conclusion: The repeat rates in this study were relatively high, especially for certain clinical procedures, warranting training in optimization techniques and radiation protection. Repeat analysis should be performed from time to time to enhance quality assurance and hence deliver high-quality health services to patients
Purpose: A method detecting change of jaw or alveolar bone density may be helpful in periodontal care, implant dentistry and evaluation of bone density of whole body. Materials and methods: In this study, bone density of intraoral periapical radiography using phantom-integrated XCP is compared with that of quantitative computed tomography (QCT). Results: Bone density of intraoral periapical radiography and the one measured by QCT showed high correlation (correlation coefficient = 0.92, P<.001) in alveolar bone, and relatively high correlation (0.73, P<.001) in cancellous bone. Conclusion: This study revealed possibility of scoring of bone density by intraoral periapical radiography.
The prominent malar region has been recognized a sign of youth and beauty in caucasian who generally have a dolichocephalic and long face. But in the orients, especially Koreans who generally have a mesocephalic or brachycephalic face, it is considered an agressive, unesthetic facial appearance. So many patients require the shaving of prominent malar eminence and arch, and many methods of its reduction have been devised. For the exposure of malar complex, infraorbital skin incision, intraoral approach, preauricular approach, supraauricular scalp incision, and coronal approach have been used. And for the reduction of bony structure, direct shaving, contouring and repositioning of the malar complex after extirpation, and medially fracture of zygomatic arch have been used with its own merits. We performed the reduction malarplasty through intraoral approach. After two parallel oeteotomy at medial part of the zygomatic bone, the midsegment is removed. The posterior arch of zygoma was bended or green stick fractured. When more correction was required, the posterior arch was fractured medially through the step incision at skin. This method has a some advantages. Compared with the method for extirpation of malar complex, the infection rate is diminished, the resorption is small because of no free bone graft. And cheek drooping is prevented. Compared with the method of coronal approach, the surgical trauma is minimal. Now we report some cases of reduction malarplasty performed through intraoral approach and disscus the surgical technique and results.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the absorbed dose and to calculate the effective dose for periapical radiography done by portable intraoral x-ray machines. Materials and Methods: 14 full mouth, upper posterior and lower posterior periapical radiographs were taken by wall-type 1 and portable type 3 intraoral x-ray machines. Thermoluminescent dosemeters were placed at 23 sites at the layers of the tissue-equivalent ART woman phantom for dosimetry. Average tissue absorbed dose and radiation weighted dose were calculated for each major anatomical site. Effective dose was calculated using 2005 ICRP tissue weighted factors. Results: On 14 full mouth periapical radiographs, the effective dose for wall-type x-ray machine was 30 Sv; for portable x-ray machines were 30 Sv, 22 Sv, 36 Sv. On upper posterior radiograph, the effective dose for wall-type x-ray machine was 4 Sv; for portable x-ray machines doses were 4 Sv, 3 Sv, 5 Sv. On lower posterior radiograph, the effective dose for wall type x-ray machine was 5 Sv; for portable x-ray machines doses were 4 Sv, 4 Sv, 5 Sv. Conclusion: Effective doses for periapical radiographs performed by portable intraoral x-ray machines were similar to doses for periapical radiographs taken by wall type intraoral x-ray machines.
