  • The purpose of this paper is to attempt the analysis of the 'Positivist' School and the 'Interpretative' School to the Relationship between Theory and Method, Using examples from Criminological Research. The differences between approach of the positivist school and interpretative school are often made very difficult to make an approach. What are more to focus on are the relationships between quantitative research and positivism and qualitative research and interpretative paradigms are often presented as essential connections. Therefore, it is a lot more difficult to imply an appropriate research method and process depends on the subject and field of the research topic. The differences between types of research and also the connections which are made between types of research and theoretical paradigms portray a very simple picture. The danger of this is that two readily available set of research methods and assuming that positivist and interpretative research style represent competing approaches and also that they present 'either-or' alternatives as to strategies of research. For example, in some instances positivist and interpretative's methods do represent alternatives but in some case, positivist and interprativist each other can complement about each other's defects in terms of use of methodology. Though depending according to the specialist of the topic, it needs sensitivity to the potentials and the contributions of different styles of data and different methods of information collection and analysis to the criminological issues under test and to the theoretical questions being asked of them.

  • Purpose of this study is to find the research direction to solve the housing problems for the elderly which based on approaches and issues in related studies. Research method was interpretative analysis of the articles issued from 1976 to 2002. Each approach (rationalistic approach, ecological approach, micro-sociological approach, typological approach, environment-psychological approach, welfare approach) produced helpful information and had relative merits. But the researchers must regard housing for the elderly as a social problem in macroscopic view to solve the housing problems for older people with welfare approach. As a result, to solve the housing problems with welfare approach for the elderly who live in their own place with community care, studies about lifetime home, care and repair, and management of housing for the elderly might be needed. And research about existing services, transfer system of services, financial problems, man power to manage the system might be needed to spread out the services to the middle class elderly.

  • Architectual environment in this study means a language and meaning complex which makes communication between human beings and environment possible. The purpose of this study is to propose a semiotic approach to analyze and examine meaning, as a semiotic system, and its effects, focusing on the generative meaning in the relationship between human beings and environment. For this purpose, it examines the academic status of modern semiotics in postmodernism and the possibility of its being metalanguatge for a study of a variety of cultural phenomena and desigv. It also provides two viewpoints as propositions for its analysis: it explains the necessity of environmental-discoursive attitude and social-semiotic viewpoint which understands environment as social-cultural reflectors. Finally, it provides framework and all the interpretative procedures for analysis of environmental meanings on the basis of the approach of semiotics of space. By applying the methods proposed this study to the case studies, it also proves validity of this approach and the potentialities of the application of semiotics. This study emphasizes not only denotative configuration of the architectural environment but also its connotative meanings. It maintains that designers, architects, and theorists should realize correctly today's changed value system and social and aesthetic paradigms. It also stresses the necessity of development of the new architectural language and meaning system.

  • Hydraulic experiments are performed in order to verify the swash effect of seashore structures installed to prevent scouring. However, a great deal of investment and time are required for producing the test apparatus and seashore structure used to perform the hydraulic experiment. The swash effect can be predicted, however, by using a numerical model and validation can be done based on comparisons of the numerical model and hydraulic experiment analysis results, thereby saving the cost and time required for producing the test apparatus and seashore structure. Taking a polyhedral rubble mound structure as the subject, this study performed a comparative analysis of wave run-up and run-down height of the numerical model interpretative results and the hydraulic experiment results, and validated the interpretative simulation wave test modeling technique. The study also predicted the swash effect by using the numerical interpretation approach method, whereby the volume ratio and friction area of the rubble mound were varied for different results.

  • In order to attain unique aesthetic value, diversity of meanings of Fusion Design, 'openness', requires meaning interpreting process(communication) which harmonizes and combines new codes suggested by authors(senders) and codes interpreted by public(receivers). For this harmony, we should consider all the art aspects(integration of synchronic and diachronic, anti-rationalism ideology, negative concept) that are bases of creativity of Fusion Aesthetics. Moreover, we can approach open thought system of Fusion Design through theories of Entropy and Rhizome. This point of view which allowed a categorical means of natural science theory to be used in design context changed a methodic or interpretative perception. Not only in art interpreting process does Fusion Design take openness as one of its necessary factors but also in creating process, which enables a work of art to be opened at the maximum. In conclusion, the significance of fusion design is to suggest an ideal model of communication abstracted from open art works.

  • The purpose of this study is to see how Korean American people use and negotiate appearance in the US. 22 Korean American women at the age of 20s to 50s were interviewed and the verbatim texts from the interviews were interpreted. Discourses on appearance style followed by consumer stories such as American vs. Korean culture, gender, class, generation as well as personal background were recorded. The results of this study revealed that Korean Americans had diverse interpretations about their appearance and styling to fit the condition of their everyday lives. Korean immigrants did not simply assimilate dominant culture over time but maintained transcultural identities depending on contexts. This study showed that researches dealing with cultural variables could have more insights about personal experiences and social meaning processes through interpretative approach.

  • Diagnostic laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) relatively evaluates the electrophysiologic status of the larynx and provides critical clinical informations that no other tests can provide. However, LEMG is still not widely applied as a routine tool in clinical practice. One reason for this is the technical and interpretative difficulties of LEMG. But if LEMG is performed by a team approach consisting of an otolaryngologist and a neurologist, the technique and the interpretation of LEMG are not difficult to master. Another reason is that there is still not exact standard guideline for clinical application of LEMG. LEMG is an essential diagnostic test in evaluating patients with neuromuscular disorders, particulary vocal fold immobility, reduced mobility of vocal fold. The more we have used LEMG, the more we have found it useful in the evaluation and treatment of voice disorders, and the role of LEMG will be extended.

  • In this study of the documentation process, a toddler's behavior was interpreted through use of text and picture both of which are subjective representations of reality. Two teachers deconstructed and reconstructed their knowledge of a photographed toddler by first referring to scientific theories from a text. They used these theories to analyze markings drawn on paper by the toddler in the photograph. But, the theories from the text were transformed into a new theory in the documentation process of reflecting on the history of markings in different contexts. Thus, the semiotics of pictures and texts changed in addition to change in meanings. This demonstrates the variability of signs, as in the concept of "rhizome" (Deleuze and Guattari, 1999).

  • Purpose - The present study examines interrelationships among antecedent factors defining consumer behavior in selecting online shopping websites. Research design, data, and methodology - The study identified factors from existing literature and used Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) to propose a conceptual approach to explain consumer website selection behavior. Through extensive discussions among industry and academia experts, qualitative assessment of the relationship between various factors was determined. Results - According to the model, eight congregating factors do not converge directly for website selection, rather, they operate following a hierarchy of influence. The ISM and MICMAC analysis reveal that information on a website and website aesthetics play key roles in influencing website selection. However, convenience and the value proposition also play very significant roles. Conclusions - The study's findings can help the e-commerce industry, especially online retailers. The findings can be used to enhance e-retailer ability to attract, communicate, engage, achieve, monitor, and evaluate web traffic and design appropriate strategies. The study's prime contribution is the application of Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM) to the field of website selection.

  • Purpose: Organizational crime is an offense committed by an individual or an official in a corporate entity for organizational gain. This study aims to explore the literature on challenges facing digital forensics and further discuss possible solutions to such challenges as far as the protection of corporate crime is concerned. Research design, data and methodology: Qualitative textual methodology matches the interpretative approach since it is a quality method meant to consider the inductivity of strategies. Also, a qualitative approach is vital because it is distinct from the techniques used in optimistic paradigms linked to science laws. Results: For achieving justice through the investigation of digital forensic, there is a need to eradicate corporate crimes. This study suggests several solutions to reduce corporate crime such as 'Solving a problem to Anti-forensic Techniques', 'Cloud computing technique', and 'Legal Framework' etc. Conclusion: As corporate crime increases in rate, the data collected by digital forensics increases. The challenge of analyzing chunks of data requires digital forensic experts, who need tools to analyze them. Research findings shows that a change of the operating system and digital evidence interpretation is becoming a challenge as the new computer application software is not compatible with older software's structure.
