  • The purpose of this study was to explore students' understanding on units embedded in multiple interpretations of fractions: (a) part-whole relationships, (b) measures, (c) quotients, (d) ratios, and (e) operators. A total of 150 sixth graders in elementary schools were surveyed by a questionnaire comprised of 20 tasks in relation to multiple interpretations of fractions. As results, students' performance on units varied depending on the interpretations of fractions. Students had a tendency to regard the given whole as the unit, which led to incorrect answers. This study suggests that students should have rich experience to identify and operate various units in the context of multiple fractions.

  • Various kinds of cognitive aspects must be inclusively considered for understanding to transitivity. Basically, transitivity is not a notion of pure lexical items, pure syntactic dimensions and only semantic interpretation. That is, transitivity is affected by the extralinguistic phenomena which contain speakers psychological and cognitive interpretations. It is based on human cognitive abilities to interpret the exact meaning of language expressions. To sum up, transitivity has a relation with the observer's (speaker's) cognitive interpretation within the entire contexts.

  • The research presents a guideline for quality practitioners to provide a full comprehension of differences in theoretical and practical interpretations of assumed sampling errors of and significance probability of calculated p-value. Besides, the study recommends the use of statistical inferences methods with known parameters to identify the improvement effects. In practice, the quality practitioners obtain the known parameters through systematic quality Database (DB) activities.

  • In order to properly interpret and process or operators in deductive databases including indefinite clauses, we propose to use Lasez′s Strong Model Semantics(LSMS) which is reasonably simple yet powerful enough to support both exclusive and inclusive interpretations. Conventional semantics either fail to support both interpretations or simply too complex. Therefore, in this paper we study advantages and difficulties of representing indefinite information, and as for the solution to difficulties, we show how LSMS can be used to support both inclusive or and exclusive or interpretations. We also investigate and analyze it′s properties and show how it semantically differs from others. We believe that LSMS is the only "reasonably simple" semantics that supports both inclusive and exclusive interpretations.

  • This study explores interpretations of grandmothers' experiences rearing their grandchildren. For this study, 13 participants provided in-depth interview data, which was analyzed according to Spradely's ethnographic method. Based on the pattern of interpretations, nine concepts were classified into three categories: (i) repentance (compulsive decisions, passivity of the childrearing activity, non-compensation); (ii) sorrow (restrictions on everyday life, renunciation of occupational careers, worsened health); and (iii) satisfaction (decreased isolation in old age, proof of existence for their children, intimacy development with their grandchild). The results of this study show that grandmothers have a higher appreciation for the benefits of relational compensation than for personal cost. Some practical implications are suggested to improve family welfare.

  • Background: Diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is a crisis situation which effects women's lives physically, socially and spiritually. Investigating women's perceptions of this disease is crucially important for treatment decisions. We therefore determined social perceptions and interpretations of women diagnosed with breast cancer during therapy and in the post-treatment period. Materials and Methods: In the study, focus group and in-depth interviews were made with women still undergoing or having completed breast cancer treatment. Some 25 women were included in the research. Content analysis was used in the analysis of the qualitative data obtained after the focus group and in-depth interviews. Results: Some of the women demonstrated positive perceptions towards accepting the disease, whereas others had emotions such as rebellion and anger. The loss of a breast is important with different interpretations. Conclusions: Women's acceptance or rebellion against the disease varies within their social interpretations after the treatment, as at the stage of diagnosis/treatment. All stages of breast cancer negatively affect the social life of the affected individual as much as her body. Nurses assume crucial roles in coping with these negative effects. Thus, it is necessary to know, and sociologically interpret, what is indicated by the information on what the negative effects concerning the disease are and how they are interpreted.

  • This essay attempts to suggest a third way to interpret probabilities based on diagnoses of weaknesses and strengths of the objective and the subjective interpretations. While the objective interpretations capture important intuitions in employing probability, it can provide the definitions of probability only in a circular way. Although the subjective interpretations seem to avoid this problem, it also fails to understand how one can extract certain information from the ignorance of a given system. It will be suggested that these problems can be bypassed if we consider probabilities as theoretical structure, which provide significant generalizations about the world.

A Study on the Interpretation of 'Daedong-eo-Hyeobui(大同於協義)' and 'Gakrip-eo-Cheonri(各立於擅利)' in Theories on Nature and Conduct(性命論) of Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) (『동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)·성명론(性命論)』의 '대동어협의(大同於協義)'와 '각립어천리(各立於擅利)'의 해석에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives : This paper aims to suggest alternative interpretations to previous ones of 'Daedong-eo-Hyeobui(大同於協義)' and 'Gakrip-eo-Cheonri(各立於擅利)' in the chapter 'Theories on Nature and Conduct(性命論)' in Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) which have been found to be inadequate. Methods : Previous interpretations were thoroughly examined, then evaluated based on the narrative form and logical probability of the Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元). Afterwards, correct interpretations of the contents were suggested based on the context of the chapter 'Theories on Nature and Conduct(性命論).' Results & Conclusions : Of 'Daedong-eo-Hyeobui(大同於協義)', Daedong(大同) should be interpreted as 'to gather largely' instead of 'all the same.' Hyeobui(協義) should be interpreted as 'to submit willingly' and not 'to cooperate to Ui(義).' In the case of 'Gakrip-eo-Cheonri(各立於 擅利)', Gakrip(各立) means for people of same minds to rise against evil individually while Cheonri(擅利) refers to the evil of coveting for gains individually. There are other cases where existing interpretations have been erroneous other than the suggested examples, which prompts thorough re-evaluation of the text.
