We have studied the stability of W/O high internal phase emulsions(HIPE) containing water, cetyl dimethicone copolyol and oils varying magnesium sulfate in the range 0 to 0.5 wt% and oil polarities, respectively. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The greater the increase of complex modulus was, the less coalescence occurred and the more consistent the concentrated emulsions were. The increasing pattern of complex modulus versus volume fraction has been explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsion. The stability is dependent on: (i) the choice of the oil is important, the requirements coincide with the requirements for the formation of the rigid liquid crystalline phases; and (ii) addition of salts the aqueous phase opposes the instability due to coalescence. Increasing the salt concentration increases the refractive index of the aqueous phase. It lowers the difference in the refractive index between the oil and aqueous phases. This decreases the attraction between the water domains, thus increasing the stability.

This paper discusses haptic display for grasping a virtual object by two fingers. Much research has been done on fundamental analysis for stability of haptic display. But it is difficult to apply the results immediately to grasping situations by two fingers, since the studies usually deal with a single device and a single object and the fingertip force in grasping situations has two components, internal and external components. The conventional methods, which specify the coupling impedance at each contact point separately, have no other alternative but to specify the impedance for the sum of the internal and external components. So even if only the impedance for the external force should be changed, the impedance for the internal force is also changed at the same time. In this paper, a new method, in which the coupling impedance is specified separately for the internal and external forces, is proposed and the stability of the proposed method is discussed using passivity analysis for 1 -DOF(Degree-Of-Freedom) system. Finally, some experiments are performed to study the effects of the proposed method.

To improve trunk stability, various exercise protocols were introduced into the clinical field. Trunk and lumbar stability exercises on unstable surfaces are especially recommended to improve lumbar stability. The purpose of this study was to compare abdominal oblique muscle activity during leg raising in hook-lying position among 3 different type of surface conditions (on floor (F), vestibular board (VB), and foam roll (FR)). Sixteen able-bodied volunteers, who had no medical history of lower extremity or lumbar spine disease, were recruited for this study. Surface electromyography (EMG) activity was recorded from the internal and external oblique muscles of both sides. The normalized EMG activity was compared using a one-way repeated ANOVA. The results showed that the EMG activities of the internal oblique and external oblique of the lifted leg side during straight leg raising significantly increased under the FR condition when compared to the F condition. There was no significant difference of the EMG activity in abdominal oblique muscles between the VB and the FR conditions. The EMG activity of the internal oblique of supported leg side during the straight leg raising was significantly greater under the FR condition than the VB and F conditions (p<.05). The composition ratio of EMG activity of internal oblique muscles during straight leg raising was significantly increased under the FR condition. Therefore, straight leg raising exercise on foam roll in hook lying position could be beneficial to improve trunk and lumbar stability.

A reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper to quantitatively evaluate the risk for internal stability of a quay wall constructed on the deep cement mixed ground, differentiating from the companion paper that mainly describes the external stability. Failure modes for toe pressure, shear strength of improved ground and extrusion of unimproved soft soil are investigated and compared in the risk estimation of internal stability using MVFOSM, FORM, and MCS. From the reliability analysis results for internal stability of a quay wall, the variance and distribution type of the compressive strength of Deep Mixed Soil-Cement appear to be very affective to the failure probability. On the other hand, other random variables seem to be relatively very insensitive to the probability of failure. It is therefore very important to rationally and accurately determine the probabilistic properties of the in-site compressive strength of Deep Mixed Soil-Cement.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the stability of a decoction using three herbal plants and their major components according to the storage conditions and periods. Materials and Methods: A three-herb mixture (1:1:1) of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer, Artemisia capillaris Thunberg, and Poncirus trifoliata Rafinesqui was decocted and kept at room temperature ($25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$) or cold temperature ($4^{\circ}C$) for 0, 2, 4 or 8 weeks in liquid form in a plastic pack under dark conditions. At time points given, they were lyophilized. 200 mg of powdered samples were dissolved in 1 mL of 90% methanol and then applied to a high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) with glycyrrhizin, 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin or poncirin for quantitative or qualitative analysis. Results: There were no gross changes in HPTLC-based compositional band-patterns of the three herbal mixture according to the storage conditions and period. The major components of each herb, glycyrrhizin, 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin and poncirin, showed slight time-dependent reduction in their contents both at room and cold temperature for 8 weeks. Conclusion: We could conclude that the current herbal decoction is generally safe for the stability at both RT or CT for at least 8 weeks. Nevertheless, we proposed that further advanced studies are required for more multiple herbal mixtures and longer storage periods.
The emulsion stability of cosmetic creams based on the water-in-oil (W/O) high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) containing water, squalane oil and cetyl dimethicone copolyol was investigated with various compositional changes, such as electrolyte concentration, oil polarity and water phase volume fraction. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The slope change of complex modulus versus water phase volume fraction monitored in the linear viscoelastic region could be explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsions: the greater the increase of complex modulus was, the more the coalescence occurred and the less consistent the emulsions were. Emulsion stability was dependent on the addition of electrolyte to the water phase. Increasing the electrolyte concentration increased the refractive index of the water phase, and thus decreased the refractive index difference between oil and water phases. This decreased the attractive force between water droplets, which resulted in reducing the coalescence of droplets and increasing the stability of emulsions. Increasing the oil polarity tended to increase emulsion consistency, but did not show clear difference in cream hardness among the emulsions.
Repairing damaged DNA and removing all physical connections between sister chromosomes is important to ensure proper chromosomal segregation by contributing to chromosomal stability. Here, we show that the depletion of non-SMC condensin I complex subunit H (NCAPH) exacerbates chromosome segregation errors and cytokinesis failure owing to sister-chromatid intertwinement, which is distinct from the ultra-fine DNA bridges induced by DNA inter-strand crosslinks (DNA-ICLs). Importantly, we identified an interaction between NCAPH and GEN1 in the chromatin involving binding at the N-terminus of NCAPH. DNA-ICL activation, using ICL-inducing agents, increased the expression and interaction between NCAPH and GEN1 in the soluble nuclear and chromatin, indicating that the NCAPH-GEN1 interaction participates in repairing DNA damage. Moreover, NCAPH stabilizes GEN1 within chromatin at the G2/M-phase and is associated with DNA-ICL-induced damage repair. Therefore, NCAPH resolves DNA-ICL-induced ultra-fine DNA bridges by stabilizing GEN1 and ensures proper chromosome separation and chromosome structural stability.

A bonded plate or a coated part can be debonded by external impact or thermal expansion. To analyse adhesive strength, the blister test is generally adopted. In this paper, a blister test is modelled theoretically and then the stability and bifurcation of the blister are studied under several different cases. The blister is simplified to consist of a pure bending plate attached elastically to the rigid substrate. Expression of the energy release rate is obtained as a form of an explicit function for a circular-type blister or tunnel-type blister grown by controlling the internal pressure or internal volume. Stability and bifurcation are also studied in the frame of the quasi-static evolution. The study shows that the circular- type blister propagates with the first mode of bifurcation and that the tunnel-type blister propagates with a regular wave. It is proved that the waves have the same form on two side lines of the tunnel and that the wave length can be obtained. When the internal pressure is controlled, the blister is unstable, but when the internal volume is controlled, it is stable.
In this paper, a study was conducted on encapsulation technology for high mechanical stability of flexible displays. First, unlike conventional encapsulation barrier that exclude cracks as much as possible for low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), mechanical properties were improved by using a defect suppression mechanism introduced with crack arresters. The zero-stress encapsulation barrier optimizes the residual stress of the thin film based to improve the internal mechanical stability. The zero-stress encapsulation barrier was applied to the organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) to confirm its characteristics and lifetime. Due to improved internal mechanical stability, it has a longer lifetime more than 35% compared to conventional encapsulation technologies. As the zero-stress encapsulation barrier proposed in this study does not require additional deposition process, it is not difficult to apply it. Based on various advantages, it is expected to play an important role in flexible displays.
