  • In this paper, we have developed numerical model for particulated flow through narrow slit using Eulerian-Granular method. Commercial software (FLUENT) was utilized as simulation tool and main focus was to identify the effect from various numerical options for modeling of solid particles as continuos phase in granular flow. Gidaspow model was chosen as basic model for solid viscosity and drag model. And lun-et-al model was used as solid pressure and radial distribution model, respectively. Several other model options in FLUENT were tested considering the cross related effect. Mass flow rate of the particulate through the slit was measured to compare. Due to the high volume density of the stacked particulates above the slit, effect from various numerical options were not significant. The numerical results from basic model were also compared with experimental results and showed very good agreement. The effects from the characteristics of particles such as diameter, angle of internal friction, and collision coefficient were also analyzed for future design of velocity resistance layer in solar thermal absorber. Angle of internal friction was found to be the dominat variable for the particle mass flow rate considerably. More defined 3D model along with energy equation for complete solar thermal absorber design is currently underway.

  • This is a study about one of the most widely used hydro machinery all over the world - pump-turbine. The system has an impeller which pumps water to an upper reservoir during the night and the same impeller acts as a runner for turbine mode during the day for providing stable electrical power to the grid. The internal flow analysis is investigated in this study to help understand how the water passes through the passage of the vanes and blades, providing the designer with useful information on the behavior of recirculation flows which could reduce the efficiency of the pump-turbine. The 100 kW pump-turbine model has H = 32 m, $Q=0.336m^3/s$ and $N=1200min^{-1}$. For this study there are 7 blades, 19 stay vanes and 20 guide vanes. From this study, it was observed that this pump-turbine design showed very good internal flow characteristics with no flow separation and no recirculation flows in normal operation mode.

  • A hydraulic quick coupler is a component used to easily connect or disconnect pipes or hoses that transfer high pressure fluid without leakage in various mechanical devices. In this study, to obtain an optimal design of a 3/8" hydraulic quick coupler, the effect of different shapes of the internal piston on the internal flow characteristics of the coupler was analyzed and evaluated through numerical analysis based on computational fluid dynamics. Subsequently, the optimal shape design of the internal piston was obtained by comparing the flow characteristics results such as velocity distribution, temperature distribution, and the pressure drop of the hydraulic quick coupler.

  • The aerodynamic design of the two-stages of centrifugal compressors in an 1.2MW industrial gas turbine is completed with the application of numerical analyses. The final shape of an intake, the axial guide vanes and a return channel is determined using several interactions between design and two-dimensional turbulent flow analysis, focused on the minimum loss of internal flows. The one-dimensional turbulent flow analysis, focused on the minimum loss of internal flows. The one-dimensional design and prediction of aerodynamic performances for the compressors are performed by two different methods; one is a method with conventional loss models, and the other a method with the two-zone model. The combination methods of the Betzier curves generate three-dimensional geometric shapes of impeller blades which are to be checked with a careful change of aerodynamic blade loadings. The impeller design is finally completed by the applications of three-dimensional compressible turbulent flow solvers, and the effect of minor change of design of the second-stage channel diffuser is also studied. All the aerodynamic design results are soon to the verified by component performance tests of prototype centrifugal compressors.

  • The purpose of this study is to design an effective atmospheric environment system through the design of the dust collection in the air shot room being operated in a domestic shipyard. The ventilation system in the current air shot room mostly uses a dust collecting filter to filter internal particles and releases them in the atmosphere. A conventional design was made too much. In order to prevent an error and draw an optimal design, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tried to be applied only to air shot room. In the advanced design technique, computer simulation was conducted to secure basic design data. In order to find the basic design of the ventilation system and the flow field in the air shot room at propeller mold workplace of a shipyard, the CFD was conducted. In the case of Model-1 as a conventional workplace, where air flows in the inlet due to the subatmospheric pressure generated by inhalation of an air blower and flows out to the outlet, a discharge flow rate was somewhat low, and there was the holdup zone in the room. In the case of Model-2 as an improved model, the ventilation system was improved in the Push-Pull type, and the holdup of the internal flow field was improved.

  • A multiblock grid generation has been applied to a Navier-Stokes design procedure of a axial-flow compressors. A multiblock structure simplifies the creation of structured H-grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the creation of a grid in the tip flow region. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The input module is made of the results of the preliminary design, i.e., flow-path, aerodynamic conditions along the spanwise direction, and the blade profile data. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the sectional blade, the blade-stacking process and the three-dimensional flow simulation inside the blade passage. Application to the blade design of the LP compressor was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities. This customized system are coupled strongly with the design procedure of the turbomachinery cascades using the Navier-Stokes technique.

  • For the improvement of the pump characteristics in the partial capacity range, it must be verified that the influence of the impeller design factor on the internal flows and the influence of the impeller internal flows on the pump characteristics. In this paper, in order to understand the influence of inlet angles on flow conditions and characteristics of a mixed flow pump, experiments were carried out for three kinds of impeller, which have the same outlet angle distributions and meridional section shapes. Results show that separation and stall in the partial capacity range can be controlled by the inlet angles. The relationship between the separation - stall at the impeller leading edge and the discharge flow conditions is clarified.

  • The serpentine internal passage is located in turbine blade and it shows the variety heat transfer distribution. Especially, the Coriolis force, which is induced by blade rotation, makes different heat transfer distribution of the leading and trailing surfaces of serpentine internal passage. The different heat transfer is one of the reasons why the serpentine cooling passage shows low cooling performance in the rotating condition. So, this study tried to design the advanced the serpentine passage to consideration of the Coriolis force. The design concept of advanced serpentine cooling is maximizing cooling performance using the Coriolis force. So, the flow turns from leading surface to trailing surface in advanced serpentine passage to match the direction of Coriolis force and rotating force. We performed numerical analysis using CFX and compared the existing and advanced serpentine internal passage. This design change is induced the high heat transfer distribution of whole advanced serpentine internal passage surfaces.

  • DME (Di-Methyl Ether) is synthetic product that is produced through dehydration of methanol or a direct synthesis from syngas. And it is able to save fossil fuel and reduce pollutants of emission such as PM and $CO_2$. In spite of its advantages it is difficult to design DME fuelled engine system because DME fuel may cause to severely generate cavitation and corrosion in fuel delivery system due to physical properties of DME. Therefore, in this study three-dimensional internal flow characteristics with consideration of cavitation were predicted in the DME injector using diesel and DME fuel. Moving grid technique was employed to describe needle motion and 1-D hydraulic simulation of injector was also simulated to obtain transient needle motion profiles. The results of simulation show that cavitations was generated at the inlet of nozzle near high velocity region both diesel and DME. And mass flow rate of DME is reduced by 4.73% compared to that of diesel at maximum valve lift because cavitation region of DME is much more larger. To increase flow rate of DME injector, internal flow simulation has been conducted to investigate the nozzle hole inner R-cut effect. The flow rates of diesel and DME increase as R-cut increases, and flow coefficient of DME fuel injector was increased by 6.3% on average compared with diesel fuelled injector. Finally, optimum shape of DME injector nozzle is suggested through the comparison of flow coefficient with variation of nozzle hole inner R-cut.
