Ultrasonic C-scan technique is one of very popular techniques being used for detection of flaws in polymer matrix composite(PMC). However, the application of this technique is very limited for evaluation of defects in PMC fabricated by the automated fiber placement process. The purpose of this study is to develop a novel ultrasonic hybrid system based on nondestructive and non-contact ultrasonic techniques for evaluation of delamination in carbon/epoxy and carbon/PPS composite laminates. It was shown that the newly developed ultrasonic hybrid system based on dual air-coupled pitch-catch technique with ultrasonic scattering reflection concept could provide excellent image with higher resolution of delamination in PMC compared with the conventional pitch-catch method. It is expected that this ultrasonic hybrid technique can be applied for on-line inspection of flaws in PMC during the fabrication process.

A 5.0-inch transmissive type plastic TFT arrays were successfully fabricated on a plastic substrate at the resolution of $400{\times}3{\times}300$ lines (100ppi). All of the TFT processes were carried out below $150^{\circ}C$ on PES plastic films. After thin film deposition using PECVD, thin film failures such as film delamination and cracking often occurred. For successful growth of thin films (about 1um) without their failures, it is necessary to solve the critical problem related to the internal compressive stress (some GPa) leading to delamination at a threshold thickness value of the films. The Griffith's theory explains the failure process by looking at the excess of elastic energy inside the film, which overcomes the cohesive energy between film and substrate. To increase the above mentioned threshold thickness value there are two possibilities: (i) the improvement of the interface adhesion (for example, through surface micro-roughening and/or surface activation), and (ii) the reduction of the internal stress. In this work, reducing a-Si layer film thickness and optimizing a barrier SiNx layer have produced stable CVD films at 150oC, over PES substrates

The most important effect of refining is believed as the internal fibrillation. The internal fibrillation is the separation of the fiber wall into several lamellae. The internal fibrillation results in fiber swelling as water penetrates the fiber wall. The increase in paper strength as a result of refining was due to delamination which made the fiber more flexible. Pulp fibers are refined to 20, 40, and 70$^{\circ}$SR freeness at Valley beater. Changes of Physical paper properties are analyzed depending on fiber wall thickness and fiber's collapse index at 2.5 and 5.6kg$_f$ refining load. At same $^[\circ}$SR freeness with 2.5kg$_f$ refining load, fiber wall thickness is increased further than at high 5.6kg$_f$ refining load. With higher fiber wall thickness by lower intensity refining load, higher internal fibrillation, flexibility, collapsability of fibers are achieved. Those effects improve WRV, tensile strength, and burst strength. Tear strength shows opposite trend to tensile and burst strength as usual.

A bonded plate or a coated part can be debonded by external impact or thermal expansion. To analyse adhesive strength, the blister test is generally adopted. In this paper, a blister test is modelled theoretically and then the stability and bifurcation of the blister are studied under several different cases. The blister is simplified to consist of a pure bending plate attached elastically to the rigid substrate. Expression of the energy release rate is obtained as a form of an explicit function for a circular-type blister or tunnel-type blister grown by controlling the internal pressure or internal volume. Stability and bifurcation are also studied in the frame of the quasi-static evolution. The study shows that the circular- type blister propagates with the first mode of bifurcation and that the tunnel-type blister propagates with a regular wave. It is proved that the waves have the same form on two side lines of the tunnel and that the wave length can be obtained. When the internal pressure is controlled, the blister is unstable, but when the internal volume is controlled, it is stable.
Recent developments in contactless, air-coupled sensing of seismic and ultrasonic waves in concrete structures are presented. Contactless sensing allows for rapid, efficient and consistent data collection over a large volume of material. Two inspection applications are discussed: air-coupled impact-echo scanning of concrete structures using seismically generated waves, and air-coupled imaging of internal damages in concrete using ultrasonic tomography. The first application aims to locate and characterize shallow delamination defects within concrete bridge decks. Impact-echo method is applied to scan defected concrete slabs using air coupled sensors. Next, efforts to apply air-coupled ultrasonic tomography to concrete damage imaging are discussed. Preliminary results are presented for air-coupled ultrasonic tomography applied to solid elements to locate internal defects. The results demonstrate that, with continued development, air-coupled ultrasonic tomography may provide improved evaluation of unseen material defects within structures.
The object of this study was to investigate the effects on physical and mechanical properties of wood particle and sawdust board combined with wire net. Conventional forming, press-lam, and veneer comply boards combining one to four wire net sheets were made from wood particle and sawdust with different spacings (8, 10, 12, and 18 Mok) and different wire diameters (0.35, 0.50, and 0.80mm) composing wire net. They were compared and analyzed statistically with specific gravity, thickness swelling, length swelling, bending properties (modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, work to proportional limit, and total work), internal bonding strength, and screw holding strength between wood particle and sawdust boards. The results obtained at this study as cording to the discussions might be concluded as follows; 1. In specific gravity, both particle and sawdust boards by press-lam method were higher than by conventional forming and veneer comply method, and the boards containing more wire net sheets also showed higher value. But the wire net spacings(Mok) had no influence on specific gravity. In general, particle board showed higher specific gravity than sawdust board. Veneer comply board showed lowest specific gravity values. 2. Both particle and sawdust boards by press-lam method was slightly lower than by conventional forming and veneer comply method in thickness swelling. The sawdust board containing 8, 12. and 18 Mok wire net showed lower thickness swelling than the corresponding particle board, but both sawdust and particle boards containing the T8 and 10 Mok wire net showed higher and similar thickness swelling. 3. Both particle and sawdust boards containing wire net showed no difference in MOR and MOE of bending. Comply board was the highest and particle board showed slightly higher than sawdust board in MOR and MOE values. 4. In work to proportional limit and total work in bending, both particle and sawdust boards containing thicker wire diameter and more wire net sheets showed higher value. From these facts, it is conceivable that boards with thicker wire diameter and more wire net sheets show increasing resistance against external force. But there was no significant difference between particle and sawdust borads. 5. In resistance against delamination (internal bonding strength), both sawdust and particle boards containing wire net showed lower value than control, and also showed decreasing tendency with more number of wire net sheet composed. Particle board showed higher resistance against delamination than sawdust board. 6. In screw holding strength, sawdust board containing thicker wire diameter and more wire net sheets showed higher value, but particle board by press-lam method was higher than by conventional forming and veneer comply method. Screw holding strength of particle board was higher than that of sawdust board.
In this study, damage resulting from internal flaws was investigated by finite element analysis for the safety evaluation of a non-destructive testing platform for hydrogen pressure vessels. A specimen was modeled and calculated using finite element analysis to determine material properties in accordance with the parameters of the composite material in order to assess the safety of the Type 4 hydrogen pressure vessel. Through this, flaws in the hydrogen pressure vessel were modeled, and test conditions were provided in accordance with rules to look into whether there was safety. Delamination, foreign object, and vertical cracks were modeled for internal flaws, and damage was examined in accordance with failure criteria. As the delamination defect approached the interior of the hydrogen pressure tank, it became more likely to cause damage. Additionally, as the crack depth grew in the case of vertical cracks, the likelihood of crack propagation rose. On the other hand, it was anticipated that the foreign item defect would suffer more damage from the outside in. A non-destructive testing platform will be used to assess the safety of fuel cell vehicles that are already in operation in future research.

External low-velocity impact loadings onto the composites cause reduction of stiffness and/or strength. The reductions indicate that internal(external) damages were developed within the composites. These damages could be matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding, or delamination between layers. In previous studies, damage evaluation have been done by applying secondary mechanical loading such as buckle-driven compressive, or fatigue, or flexural loadings. An evaluation method by applying indentation loadings on the composites was proposed. The load-displacement curves obtained from the indentation testing provided the extent of damages within the composites due to impact loadings.
Tape casting and lamination were used to produce heterogeneous laminates with alternating layers of different porosity and homogeneous laminates with component layers of the same porosity. The pore structure was investigated for heterogeneous laminates, and bend strength was measured for comparison with that of homogeneous laminates. For a reference, strength measurement was made for the porous body fabricated by sintering samples dry-pressed at low pressure with spray-dried granules. Strength increase, in the range 50~120 MPa, was achieved in the presence of the surface dense layer, while extensive delamination, presumably responsible for enhanced fracture toughness, took place through the internal porous layer.

This study reports on the pressure relief design and braided composite of surge arrester. Surge arresters with porcelain housing must not have explosive breakage of the housing to minimize damage to other equipment when subjected to internal high short circuit current. As a solution, this study describes pressure relief design performance of arresters with braided composite module. In general, braided composite has Potential for improved impact and delamination resistance. Manufacturing processes of the braided composite could also be automated and could potentially lead to lower costs. Therefore, in consideration of characteristics of pressure relief for polymer arrester, the fabric pattern of braided composite was decided. And Polymer arrester module was manufactured with braid. The mechanisms of pressure occurrence and relief were investigated basically by analyzing arc energy and the correlation between thermal shock and indoor pressure in pressure relief test.
