The effect of the di-tertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP) additive on the heat release rate and emissions of a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine fueled with high Research Octane Number (RON) fuels were investigated. The experiments were performed using 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% (by volume) DTBP-RON90 blends. The RON90 Fuel was obtained by blending 90% iso-octane with 10% n-heptane. The experimental results show that the operation range was remarkably expanded to lower temperature and lower engine load with the DTBP additive in RON90 fuel. The first ignition phase of HCCI combustion was observed at 850 K and ended at 950 K while the hot ignition occurred at 1125 K for all fuels at different engine working conditions. The chemical reaction scale time decreases with the DTBP addition. As a result, the ignition timing advances, the combustion duration shortens, and heat release rates were increased at overall engine loads. Meanwhile, the unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) and CO emissions decrease sharply with the DTBP addition while the NOx emissions maintain at a lower level.
This review will be concentrated on the spray characteristics of biobutanol and its blends fuels in internal combustion engines including compression ignition, spark ignition and gas turbine engines. Butanol can be produced by fermentation from sucrose-containing feedstocks, starchy materials and lignocellulosic biomass. Among four isomers of butanol, n-butanol and iso-butanol has been used in CI and SI engines. This is due to higher octane rating and lower water solubility of both butanol compared with other isomers. The researches on the spray characteristics of neat butanol can be classified into the application to CI and SI engines, particularly GDI engine. Two empirical correlations for the prediction of spray angle for butanol as a function of Reynolds number was newly suggested. However, the applicability for the suggested empirical correlation is not yet proved. The butanol blended fuels used for the investigation of spray characteristics includes butanol-biodiesel blend, butanol-gasoline blend, butano-jet A blend and butanol-other fuel blends. Three blends such as butanol/ethanol, butanol/heptane and butanol/heavy fuel oil blends are included in butanol-other fuel blends. Even though combustion and emission characteristics of butanol/diesel fuel blend in CI engines were broadly investigated, study on spray characteristics of butanol/diesel fuel blend could not be found in the literature. In addition, the more study on the spray characteristics of butanol /gasoline blend is required.
Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion systems can be broadly divided for the process applied to 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines. The former process is often referred to as simply HCCI combustion and the latter process as Active Thermo-Atmosphere Combustion (ATAC). The region of stable engine operation tends to differ greatly between the two processes. In this study, it was shown that the HCCI combustion process of a 4-stroke engine, characterized by the occurrence of autoignition under a high compression ratio, a lean mixture and wide open throttle operation, could be simulated by operating a 2-stroke engine at a higher compression ratio. On that basis, a comparison was made of the combustion characteristics of high-compression-ratio HCCI combustion and ATAC, characterized as autoignited combustion in the presence of a large quantity of residual gas at a low compression ratio and part throttle. The results showed that one major difference between these two combustion processes was their different degrees of susceptibility to the occurrence of cool flame reactions. Compared with high-compression-ratio HCCI combustion, the ignition timing of ATAC tended not to change in relation to different fuel octane numbers. Furthermore, when internal EGR was applied to high-compression-ratio HCCI combustion, it resulted in combustion characteristics resembling ATAC. Specifically, as the internal EGR rate was increased, the ignition timing showed less change in relation to changes in the octane number and the region of stable engine operation also approached that of ATAC.

Exhaust gas emissions from internal combustion engines are one of the major sources of air pollution. And, it is extremely difficult to increase gasoline engine efficiency and to reduce $NO_X$ and PM(particulate matter) simultaneously in diesel combustion. This paper offers some basic concepts to overcome the above problems. To solve the problems, a recommended technique is CAI(controlled auto-ignition) combustion. In this paper, a flame trap was used to simulate internal EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) effect. An experimental study was carried out to find combustion characteristics using homogeneous premixed gas mixture in the constant volume combustion chamber(CVCC). Flame propagation photos and pressure signals were acquired to verify the flame trap effect. The flame trap creates high speed burned gas jet. It achieves higher flame propagation speed and more stable combustion due to the effect of geometry and burned gas jet.

Combustion instability in solid rocket motors is a long-term open problem since the first rockets were used. Based on the numerous previous studies, it is known that the limit cycle amplitude is one of the key characteristics of the nonlinear combustion instability in solid rocket motors. Flandro's extended energy balance corollary, aims to predict the limit cycle amplitude of complex, nonlinear pressure oscillations for rockets or air-breathing engines, and leads to a precise assessment of nonlinear combustion instability in solid rocket motors. However, based on the comparison with experimental data, it is revealed that the Flandro's method cannot accurately describe such a complex oscillatory pressure. Thus in this work we make modifications of the nonlinear term in the nonlinear wave equations which represents the interaction of different modes. Through this modified method, a numerical simulation of the cylindrical solid rocket has been carried out, and the simulated result consists well with the experimental data. It means that the added coefficient makes the nonlinear wave growth equations describe the experimental data better.
In this study, fault diagnosis and monitoring of serial wound pre-engaged starter motors have been carried out. Starter motors are DC motors that enable internal combustion engine (ICE) to run. In case of breakdown of a starter motor, internal combustion engine can not be worked. Starter motors have vital importance on internal combustion engines. Kohonen network based fault diagnosis system is proposed for fault diagnosis and monitoring of starter motors. A graphical user interface (GUI) software has been developed by using Visual Basic 6.0 for fault diagnosis. Six faults, seen in starter motors, have been diagnosed successfully by using the developed fault diagnosis system. GUI software makes it possible to diagnose the faults in starter motors before they occur by keeping fault records of past occurrences.

Taking into account the increasingly stringent legislation on emissions from marine engines, this work aims to analyze several internal engine modifications to reduce $NO_x$ (nitrogen oxides) and other pollutants. To this end, a numerical model was employed to simulate the operation cycle and characterize the exhaust gas composition. After a preliminary validation process was carried out using experimental data from a four-stroke, medium-speed marine engine, the numerical model was employed to study the influence of several internal modifications, such as water addition from 0 to 100% water to fuel ratios, exhaust gas recirculation from 0 to 100% EGR rates, modification of the overlap timing from 60 to $120^{\circ}$, modification of the intake valve closing from 510 to $570^{\circ}$, and modification of the cooling water temperature from 70 to $90^{\circ}C$. $NO_x$ was reduced by nearly 100%. As expected, it was found that, by lowering the combustion temperature, there is a notable reduction in $NO_x$, but an increase in CO (carbon monoxide), HC (hydrocarbons) and consumption.
The HCCI engines have been known with high efficiency and low pollution and can be actualized as the new internal combustion engines. However, As for(??) the ignition and combustion depend strongly on the oxidation reaction of the fuel, so it is difficult to control auto-ignition timing and combustion duration. Purpose of this paper is creating the database for development of multi-dimensional simulation and investigating the influence of different molecular structure. In this research, the effect of n-heptane mole ratio in fuel (XnH) on the ignition delay from homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) has been investigated experimentally. By varying the XnH, it was possible to ascertain whether or not XnH is the main resource of ignition delay. Additionally, the information on equivalence ratio for varying XnH was obtained. The tests were performed on a RCM (Rapid Compression Machine) fueled with n-heptane and iso-octane. The results showed that decreasing XnH (100, 30, 20, 10,0), the ignition delays of low temperature reaction (tL) and high temperature reaction (tH) is longer. And the temperature of reaction increases by about 30K. n-heptane partial equivalence ratio (fnH) affect on tL.and TL. When ${\phi}$nH was increased as a certain value, tL was decreased and TL was increased.

Finding an alternative fuel and reducing environmental pollution are the main goals for future internal combustion engines. The purpose of this study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency by hydrogen enriched LPG fuel in constant volume chamber. An experimental study was carried out to obtain fundamental data for the combustion and emission characteristics of pre-mixed hydrogen and LPG in a constant volume chamber (CVC) with various fractions of hydrogen-LPG blends. To maintain equal heating value of fuel blend, the amount of LPG was decreased as hydrogen was gradually added. Exhaust emissions were measured using a HORIBA exhaust gas analyzer for various fractions of hydrogen-LPG blends. The results showed that the rapid combustion duration was shortened, and the rate of heat release elevated as the hydrogen fraction in the fuel blend was increased. Moreover, the maximum rate of pressure rise also increased. These phenomena were attributed to the burning velocity which increased exponentially with the increased hydrogen fraction in the $H_2$-LPG fuel blend. Exhaust HC and $CO_2$ concentrations decreased, while NOX emission increased with an increase in the hydrogen fraction in the fuel blend. Our results could facilitate the application of hydrogen and LPG as a fuel in the current fossil hydrocarbon-based economy and the strict emission regulations in internal combustion engines.

Biogas produced from anaerobic digestion processes has about 60% of methane and about 40% of carbon dioxide. Raw biogas can be used in internal combustion engines either spark ignition or diesel engines. Since the gas has relatively low calorific values, engine power also is lower than rated power values. Modified engines or biogas-specific engines have been utilized in order to increase efficiency. Another option is gas cleansing for increasing its calorific values. A couple of European countries adopted this approach in using biogas for one of transportation fuels, such as $CO_2$ scrubbing with water or special solutions. This study reports the results of water scrubbing for reducing $CO_2$ concentration. In 2.5m-high PVC pipe accepting water, $CO_2$ reduction rates were investigated. When flow rate of $CO_2$ and air mixture was about 5 LPM, $CO_2$ concentration was decreased up to 70%. Higher calorific biogas through water scrubbing is expected to be applied to various commercial engines without costly modification.
