  • Many box girder bridges have been constructed during the past several decades due to their large bending and torsional rigidities as well as aesthetic considerations. However, box girders have shortcoming in that the cross section distorts under an eccentric loading and warps out of the section plane. Therefore, in order to reduce distortional stresses such as distortional warping and transverse bending normal stresses, diaphragms were generally installed in the box girders. Shapes of the diaphragms in steel-box-girder bridges constructed up to date were solid-plate, frame, and truss types. The objectives of this study using parametric study were to evaluate the appropriate stiffness ratio of intermediate diaphragms and then to propose the effective spacing and numbers of intermediate diaphragms based on the evaluated stiffness ratio. Target bridges for this study were straight continuous span bridges with a single-cell steel box section. The parameters for the parametric study were the shape of box section, the span numbers, the equivalent span length, the stiffness of intermediate diaphragms, and the spacing of intermediate diaphragms. From the results of the parametric study, the effective spacing and numbers as well as the stiffness ratio of the intermediate diaphragms will be presented.

  • The Gyeongju underground silo type disposal facility, approved for use in December 2014, is in operation for the disposal of low and very low-level radioactive wastes, excluding intermediate-level waste. That is why the existing low-level radioactive waste level has been subdivided and the concentration limit value for intermediate-level waste has been changed in accordance with Nuclear Safety Commission Notice 2014-003. For the safe disposal of intermediate-level wastes, new optimization methodology for calculating the concentration limit of intermediate radioactive level wastes at an underground silo type disposal facility was developed. According to the developed optimization methodology, concentration limits of intermediate-level wastes were derived and the inventory of radioactive nuclides was evaluated. The operation and post closure scenarios were evaluated for the derived radioactive nuclide inventory and the results of all scenarios were confirmed to meet the regulatory limit. However, in case of $^{14}C$, it was confirmed that additional radioactivity limitation through a well scenario was needed in addition to the limit of disposal concentration. It was confirmed that the derived intermediate concentration limit of radioactive waste can be used as the intermediate-level waste concentration limit for the underground disposal facility. For the safe disposal of intermediate-level wastes, KORAD plans to acquire additional data from the radioactive waste generator and manage the cumulative radioactivity of $^{14}C$.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of exchange rate volatility on the export of Korean machinery intermediate goods to East Asian countries using the export demand model. In order to secure the validity of the estimation of the exchange rate volatility for the export of machinery intermediate goods, various methods of volatility measurement are used including the GARCH model, the moving average standard deviation and the 12-month fixed average standard deviation. The long-term relationship between variables was analyzed by applying the panel cointegration tests and DOLS & FMOLS panel estimations. Analysis results found that prior to the global financial crisis in 2008, the total exports of machinery and exchange rate volatility positively affect the exports of intermediate goods such as general machinery, electronic machinery and transportation equipment, but did not affect the exports of precision machinery intermediate goods. After the global financial crisis, however, exchange rate volatility negatively affected total exports and the exports of all machinery intermediate goods. When analyzing the period before and after the global financial crisis, it had a positive impact on exports of precision machinery intermediate goods and a negative effect on total exports and the exports of other machinery intermediate goods.

  • Background: The present study evaluated the clinical implications of adjuvant chemotherapy according to the mismatch repair (MMR) status and clinicopathologic features of patients with intermediate- and high-risk stage II colon cancer (CC). Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 5,774 patients who were diagnosed with CC and underwent curative surgical resection at Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital. The patients were enrolled according to the following criteria: (1) pathologically diagnosed with primary CC; (2) stage II CC classified based on the 7th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system; (3) intermediate- and high-risk features; and (4) available test results for MMR status. A total of 286 patients met these criteria and were included in the study. Results: Among the 286 patients, 54 (18.9%) were identified as microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) or deficient MMR (dMMR). Although all the patients identified as MSI-H/dMMR showed better survival outcomes, T4 tumors and adjuvant chemotherapy were identified as independent prognostic factors for survival. For the intermediate-risk patients identified as MSI-low (MSI-L)/microsatellite stable (MSS) or proficient MMR (pMMR), adjuvant chemotherapy exhibited a significantly better disease-free survival (DFS) but had no impact on overall survival (OS). Oxaliplatin-containing regimens showed no association with DFS or OS. Adjuvant chemotherapy was not associated with DFS in intermediate-risk patients identified as MSI-H/dMMR. Conclusion: The current study found that the use of adjuvant chemotherapy was correlated with better DFS in MSI-L/MSS or pMMR intermediate-risk stage II CC patients.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of principal stress direction and magnitude of intermediate principal stress on the undrained stress-strain-strength behaviors of Bangkok Clay. The results of torsional shear hollow cylinder and advanced triaxial tests with various principal stress directions and magnitudes of intermediate principal stress on undisturbed Bangkok Clay specimens are presented. The analysis of testing results include: (i) stress-strain and pore pressure behaviors, (ii) stiffness characteristics, and (iii) strength characteristics. The results assert clear evidences of anisotropic characteristics of Bangkok Clay at pre-failure and failure conditions. The magnitude of intermediate principal stress for plane-strain condition is also investigated. Both failure surface and plastic potential in deviatoric plane of Bangkok Clay are demonstrated to be isotropic and of circular shape which implies an associated flow rule. It is also observed that the shape of failure surface in deviatoric plane changes its size, while retaining its circular shape, with the change in direction of major principal stress. Concerning the behavior of Bangkok Clay found from this study, the discussions on the effects of employed constitutive modeling approach on the resulting numerical analysis are made.

  • Background: Diagnostic karyotyping analysis is routinely used in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) clinics. Categorization of patients into risk stratified groups (favorable, intermediate and adverse) according to cytogenetic findings can serve as a valuable independent prognostic factor. Method and Material: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted based on the patient records of newly diagnosed non-M3 AML young adult cases undergoing standard 3+7 i.e, Daunorubicin and Ara-C (DA) as remission induction chemotherapy. Diagnostic cytogenetic analysis reports were analyzed to classify the patients into risk stratified groups according to South West Oncology Group criteria and prognostic significance was measured with reference to achievement of haematological remission after 1st induction chemotherapy. Results:A normal karyotype was commonly expressed, found in 47.2% of patients, while 65% (n=39) appeared to have intermediate risk cytogenetics, and 13.3% (n=8) adverse or unclassified findings. Favourable cytogenetics was least frequent in the patient cohort, accounting for only 8.3 % (n=5).The impact of cytogenetic risk groups on achievement of haematological remission was evaluated by applying Pearson Chi-square, and was found to be non-significant (df=12, p=0.256) but when the outcomes of favourable risk groups with intermediate, adverse and unclassified findings compared, results were highly significant (df=6, p=0.000) for each comparison. In patients of the favourable cytogenetic risk group, HR?? was reported in 40% (n=2/5), as compared to 62.2% (n=23/37) in the intermediate cytogenetic risk group, 57.1% (n=4/7) in the adverse cytogenetic risk group and 28.6% (n=2/7) in hte unclassified cytogenetic risk group. Conclusion: Cytogenetic risk stratification for AML cases following criteria provided by international guidelines did not produce conclusive results in our Pakistani patients. However, we cannot preclude an importance as the literature clearly supports the use of pretreatment karyotyping analysis as a significant predictive marker for clinical outcomes. The apparent differences between Pakistani and Western studies indicate an urgent need to develop risk stratification guidelines according to the specific cytogenetic makeup of South Asian populations.

  • The success of the porcelain fused to gold alloy restoration depends not only on the choice of materials but to a larger degree on the technical skills. The porcelain fused to metal(PFM) alloys containing gold are commonly use for dental purposes in dental laboratory. The gold-colored alloys contain primarily gold, platinum, palladium, and silver, with minimum amounts of such metals as tin, iridium, or titanium. The purpose of this study is on the metal-porcelain fusing layer in porcelain fused to high gold alloy Principal results are as follows. The hardness number(Hv) of PFG is respectively $140.2{\pm}12.6$ in as-casted, $164.3{\pm}14.3$ in heat-treated, $186.6{\pm}20.4$ in fired-treated. The formation of the fusing(intermediate) layer caused by components fusing the interface of porcelain and gold alloy. The main components of the fusing(intermediate) layer are Na, Al, Si, K, Zn, Zr and Ce. The intermediate layer formed by the 2nd firing is more larger than the intermediate layer formed by the 1st firing.

  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is blown as one of the inherited disorder of peripheral nervous system. Recently, it was found that point mutations in the neurofilament light subunit (NF-L) gene cause CMT. Neurofilaments (NFs) are heteropolymers consist of NF-L, NF-M and NF-H. To assess the relationship between CMT and NF-L mutation in cellular level, we performed phenotypic analysis of the mutant NF-L (E397K) using cultured cell lines. Vimentin-deficient human adrenal carcinoma SW13 (Vim-) cells have a potential to form the intermediate filaments when the cells are expressing both NF-L and NF-M. Our results show that co-expression of wild type NF-L with NF-M showed intermediate filament formation in SW13 (Vim-) cells, while E397K with NF-M did not. This result means that E397K mutant lost its ability to form the intermediate filament in vivo, and further suggests that the E397K mutation is closely related to CMT.

  • This paper presents a rotordynamic analysis of the reduction gear system applied to the 250 kW super critical CO2 cycle. The reduction gear system consists of an input shaft, intermediate shaft, and output shaft. Because of the high rotating speed of the input shaft, we install tilting pad bearings, rolloer bearings support the intermediate and output shafts. To predict the tilting pad bearing performance, we calculate the applied loads to the tilting pad bearings by considering the reaction forces from the gear. In the rotordynamic analysis, gear mesh stiffness results in a coupling effect between the lateral and torsional vibrations. The predicted Campbell diagram shows that there is not a critical speed lower than the rated speed of 30,000 rpm of the input shaft. The predicted modes on the critical speeds are the combined bending modes of the intermediate and output shaft, and the lateral vibrations dominate when compared to the torsional vibrations. The damped natural frequency does not strongly depend on the rotating speeds, owing to the relatively low rotating speed of the intermediate and output shaft and constant stiffness of the roller bearing. In addition, the logarithmic decrements of all the modes are positive; therefore all modes are stable.

  • In resist-discharge printing of cotton fabrics with reactive/reactive dyes the effects of intermediate drying on the white and the colored resist-dischargeabilities were studied. From the results of resist-discharge printing in case of 75% pick up, it was found that the most effective condition of intermediate drying which could at once prevent bleeding and improve the resist-dischargeability was 11$0^{\circ}C$ x 1min. The drying condition of 10$0^{\circ}C$ x 2min or 12$0^{\circ}C$ x 1min can be also recommended. It is important to pay close attention to the intermediate drying temperature and time. Because in case of 75% pick up when drying was carried on at 11$0^{\circ}C$ or 12$0^{\circ}C$ for more than 1 minute the resist-dischargeability was greatly lowerd by the fast fixation of ground color caused by high temperature, and in case of 100 % pick up the insufficient drying of ground color caused the resist-dischargeability to lower with giving rise to various troubles such as bleeding and smearing.
