This research was performed to use recycling wood fiber from waste MDF as raw materials for manufacturing of interior decorative accessories. Virgin fiber of Pinus rigida for manufacturing MDF and recycling fiber from manufactured MDF with virgin fiber were dyed by using reactive dyes (Bis-monochlorotriazine and Vinyl sulfone type), vat dyes (Anthraquinone type), direct dyes (Diazo type) such as red, yellow and blue, and natural dyes using gardenia or sappan wood, and they were examined to evaluate their dyeing properties and sunlight fastness. The hue of virgin fiber and recycling fiber were 4.2YR, and 4.4YR, respectively, which showed red-yellowish color. The recycling fiber looked a little darker than the virgin fiber, where $L^*$ values of the recycling fiber showed a little lower. Reactive, vat and direct dyes dyed well both the virgin and recycling fibers. The recycling fiber showed a little higher values of colour yield and a little lower in $L^*$, but it seemed that there was no significant difference. The Hue values of the recycling fiber and the virgin fiber dyed with sappan wood were 4.4YR and 4.0YR, showing no difference between/after dyeing. However the Hue values of the recycling fiber and the virgin fiber dyed with gardenia were 7.4YR and 6.9YR, respectively. Those values were much higher than the values of the fibers dyed with other chemical dyes. But the fibers dyed with gardenia showed poor sunlight fastness.
Radial and tangential diffusion coefficients of boron in wood under water leaching conditions were determined from the change of concentration profiles of boron. Egner's solution was used to obtain variable diffusion coefficients of boron because it has been known to be the only method to determine variable diffusion coefficients with no cumbersome assumption. The values of diffusion coefficients were between $0.18{\times}10^{-6}m^2/sec$ and $25.6{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/sec$. They increased with the increase of sample thicknesses, and decreased with the increase of leaching times. There was a region where Egner's method was not valid. However, Egner's solution illustrates a convenient way to evaluate diffusion characteristics of boron from wood under water leaching conditions. The diffusion coefficients at wood surface may be regarded as leaching coefficients.
This study aimed to obtain basic climate information for effective moisture control in wood in Korea. Two independent climate indexes, namely drying index (DI) and wetting index (WI), were determined using hourly weather data for 82 locations recorded from 2009 to 2017. These data were collected from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Hourly data had not been measured prior to 2009. DI and WI revealed that all regions were cold and wet except Baengnyeongdo, which was classified as a cold and dry region. DI and WI were normalized assuming that wetting and drying were equally important phenomena. Then, the normalized indexes were combined into moisture index (MI) to rank the moisture loading of the regions. The MIs showed that Seogwipo had the greatest moisture loading in Korea, followed by Seongsan, Namhae, and Geoje. The MIs suggested that Korea exhibited severe moisture loading. Further studies are required to investigate the relation between MI and moisture content on wood surfaces from a wood maintenance point of view.

In this study, the figure of domestic hardwood was observed using the naked eye and the possibility of substituting imported wood with domestic one in the making woodcraft or furniture was investigated. It was known from the investigation on 8 different hardwoods that there were various figures such as cloud-shaped figure, blister figure, crotch figure, bird's eye figure, etc. in Zelkova serrata wood and the beautiful pigment figure in Diospyros Kaki wood. There were the unusual figures such as wavy grain figure, fiddle back figure, etc. in Cedrela sinensis wood and was clear ray-fleck figure in Quercus variabilis wood. There were also various figures such as wavy grain figure, blister figure, pigment figure, etc. in Sophra japonica, Tilia amurensis, Castanea crenata, Kalopanax septemlobus wood, etc. It is thus that distinguished figures appeared in each kind of wood can be used for craft, sculpture, furniture, and interior material. These kinds of figures can also be used for instrument, toy, stationery, life article material and souvenir, etc. And it can be expected that they will replace the imported wood has been mainly used to make the woodcraft or furniture until now.
In this paper, the relationships between volumetric mixing ratio of rubber chip and physical and mechanical properties of wood/rubber composite panel was examined in order to investigate the mixture characteristics of wood and rubber chip. Because of the specific gravity of rubber differed from wood chip, physical properties of wood/rubber composite panel was shown very different values by mixing rate of chip element. Specific gravity in air-dry of composite panel was increased rapidly as volumetric percent of rubber chip was increased. Moisture content of composite panel was decreased as volumetric percent of rubber chip element was increased. This results was considered that wood weight is light and porosity material for moisture absorption. Compressive strength and modulus of rupture in bending test were decreased as volumetric percent of rubber chip increased. By mixing ratio control of chip elements, various wood/rubber composite panel can be applicable to every interior materials such as subfloor, playground, and exterior materials such as road blocks for recreational facilities in garden and forest and city parks.

In this study, the combustion characteristics of the Tulip tree, which is the representative broad-leaved afforestation tree in Korea, were analyzed. The flame retardant performance of the Tulip tree was analyzed by analyzing combustion characteristics on a total of three test samples; flame retardant treated, both flame retardant and oil stain-treated, and untreated. Then the flame retardance grade was classified for each of them. According to the result, test samples showed the strongest flame retardance were in order of flame retardant treated (C), both flame retardant and oil stain-treated (B), and untreated (A). As a result of analyzing the total heat emission and maximum heat emission rates, which is the evaluation standard for interior materials of Korean domestic buildings, test samples with flame retardant treat or flame retardant and oil stain treat were qualified for the flame-retardant standard. Both flame retardant and oil stain-treated samples showed higher total heat release (THR) and heat release rate compared to flame retardant-treated samples as the oil causes combustion with oxygen. On the other hand, they didn't qualify the THR in Quasi-non-combustible standards. To determine the correlation between the physical and combustion characteristics of wood, the combustion characteristics of other diffuse porous wood species, with which the Tulip tree is affiliated were analyzed, and noticed that the characteristic correlates with the density and quantity of wood. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic information on the combustion characteristics of the Tulip tree.
Indoor air quality is a very important environmental factor in modern society. However, air pollutants generated from various interior construction materials significantly affect the human body, including formaldehyde (HCHO) and volatile organic compounds that threaten public health by deteriorating indoor air quality. Effective in removing these harmful substances are porous materials, such as woodceramics. In this study, charcoal, a porous material, was added to rice husk, an agricultural by-product, and sawdust generated during the sawing process to prepare boards and ceramics at different mixing ratios, and the HCHO deodorization performance and far-infrared emission characteristics were measured. As the mixing ratio of charcoal increased, the deodorization rate of the boards and ceramics tended to increase. Overall, the deodorization rate was measured to be 80% to 90%, indicating that the boards and ceramics prepared with charcoal are suitable to be used for the purpose of deodorization. The effect of the material mixing ratio on far-infrared emissivity and emission power was insignificant.
As the needs of housing for the elderly has increased, many researches have been carried out and some housing projects for the elderly including nursing home began to be provided. Most researches have focused on the development of housing type or space layout and only several ones on interior design. The interior design in house influences physically or psychologically on the elderly who lives in. Also, the subject of them which examined the needs or preference for housing for the elderly were the middle-aged, not the aged. The purpose of the study was to examine the preferred characteristics of interior design in residential space by the elderly. The structured interview with 120 old persons who lived in Busan was carried out using by a questionnaire and 3D images. The elderly answered about the preferred interior style, color, lighting and interior finishes of each room in house, such as living room, master bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. On the basis of the findings, the characteristics of interior design of each room in house which the elderly preferred were presented. In general, they preferred the mixed interior style with tradition and modem. Also, the reddish and purple interior color, flower or plant patterned wall finishes, and wood floor were preferred in living room and master bedroom by the elderly. The white interior color and one colored wall finishes without any pattern were preferred in kitchen and bathroom.

Predicting the amount and distribution of moisture content within wood allows calculating the various mechanical dynamics of the wood as well as determining the drying time. For boxed-heart wood with a large cross-section, since it is difficult to measure the moisture content of the interior, it is necessary to predict the moisture content distribution. This study predicted the moisture movement in boxed-heart red pine timber, during high temperature drying, by using the three-dimensional finite difference method for the efficient drying process. During drying for 72 h, the predicted and actual moisture content of the tested wood tended to decrease at a similar rate. In contrast, the actual moisture content at 196 and 240 h was lower than predicted because surface checking of the wood occurred from 72 h and excessive water emission was unexpectedly occurred from the checked and splitted surface.
This paper is an outgrowth of many years of practicing real interior work projects and one of my responses to the question not only about the actual dimension of interior work surface but also about the classification of contemporary finishing materials in basic interior project of high-rise apartment houses. For this purpose, 8 conventional apartment units which are already-built or designed have been surveyed and the results are interpreted in the form of proportion of space and finishes. The data can be applied to make up a schematic design in the selection of environment-friendly interior works and assessment of the degree of sustainability. For further study, the basic data provided here can be used as an index to differentiate the occupants' desire toward green interior design for their own apartment spaces, comparing to the conventional interior work in the Korean market. Not surprisingly, wall paper is dominated to make the interior surface in apartment houses. In the percentile of the utilization of finishing materials, wood-flooring and coating materials like wet paint also ranked at the upper position.
