This paper discussed and analyzed the interfacial stress distribution characteristic of adjacent cracks in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plate strengthened concrete slabs. One un-strengthened concrete test beam and four CFRP plate-strengthened concrete test beams were designed to carry out four-point flexural tests. The test data shows that the interfacial shear stress between the interface of CFRP plate and concrete can effectively reduce the crack shrinkage of the tensile concrete and reduces the width of crack. The maximum main crack flexural height in pure bending section of the strengthened specimen is smaller than that of the un-strengthened specimen, the CFRP plate improves the rigidity of specimens without brittle failure. The average ultimate bearing capacity of the CFRP-strengthened specimens was increased by 64.3% compared to that without CFRP-strengthen. This indicites that CFRP enhancement measures can effectively improve the ultimate bearing capacity and delay the occurrence of debonding damage. Based on the derivation of mechanical analysis model, the calculation formula of interfacial shear stress between adjacent cracks is proposed. The distributions characteristics of interfacial shear stress between certain crack widths were given. In the intermediate cracking region of pure bending sections, the length of the interfacial softening near the mid-span cracking position gradually increases as the load increases. The CFRP-concrete interface debonding capacity with the larger adjacent crack spacing is lower than that with the smaller adjacent crack spacing. The theoretical calculation results of interfacial bonding shear stress between adjacent cracks have good agreement with the experimental results. The interfacial debonding failure between adjacent cracks in the intermediate cracking region was mainly caused by the root of the main crack. The larger the spacing between adjacent cracks exists, the easier the interfacial debonding failure occurs.
This paper presents an innovative stress-function variational approach in formulating the interfacial shear and normal stresses in an externally bonded concrete joint using carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) plies. The joint is subjected to surface traction loadings applied at both ends of the concrete substrate layer. By introducing two interfacial shear and normal stress functions on the CFRP-concrete interface, based on Euler-Bernoulli beam idea and static stress equations of equilibrium, the entire stress fields of the joint were determined. The complementary strain energy was minimized in order to solve the governing equation of the joint. This yields an ordinary differential equation from which the interfacial normal and shear stresses were proposed explicitly, satisfying all the multiple traction boundary conditions. Lamination theory for composite materials was also employed to obtain the interfacial stresses. The proposed approach was validated by the analytic models in the literature as well as through a comprehensive computational code generated by the authors. Furthermore, a numerical verification was carried out via the finite element software ABAQUS. In the end, a scaling analysis was conducted to analyze the interfacial stress field dependence of the joint upon effective issues using the devised code.
Numerous studies and approaches have been performed for solar cells to improve their photoelectric conversion efficiencies. Among them, the study for electrode containing transparent conducting oxide (TCO) layers is one of issues as well as for the cell structure based on band theory. In this study, we focused on an interfacial layer between p-type silicon and indium tin oxide (ITO) well-known as TCO materials. According to current-voltage characteristics for the sample with the interfacial layers, the improvement of band alignment between p-type silicon and ITO was observed, and their ohmic properties were enhanced in the proper condition of deposition. To investigate cause of this improvement, spectroscopic ellipsometry and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized. Using these techniques, band alignment and defect in the band gap were examined. The major materials of the interfacial layer are vanadium oxide and tungsten oxide, which are notable as a hole transfer layer in the organic solar cells. Finally, the interfacial layer was applied to silicon solar cells to see the actual behavior of carriers in the solar cells. In the case of vanadium oxide, we found 10% of improvement of photoelectric conversion efficiencies, compared to solar cells without interfacial layers.
This paper proposes an ultrasonic measurement method for measurement of linear interfacial stiffness of contacting surface between two steel plates subjected to nominal compression pressures. Interfacial stiffness was evaluated by using shear waves reflected at contact interface of two identical solid plates. Three consecutive reflection waves from solid-solid surface are captured by pulse-echo method to evaluate the state of contact interface. A non-dimensional parameter defined as the ratio of their peak-to-peak amplitudes are formulated and used to calculate the quantitative stiffness of interface. Mathematical model for 1-D wave propagation across interfaces is developed to formulate the reflection and transmission waves across the interface and to determine the interfacial stiffness. Two identical plates are fabricated and assembled to form contacting surface and to measure interfacial stiffness at different states of contact pressure by means of bolt fastening. It is found from experiment that the amplitude of interfacial stiffness is dependent on the pressure and successfully determined by employing pulse-echo ultrasonic method without measuring through-transmission waves.
Each year, new technological advancements for repair-purpose are being introduced to overlay the old deterioration of RC bridge deck at highway by latex-modified concrete. The days may come when this old problem will be successfully resolved. While the experimental works and researches are very active at both laboratory and field, only a few theoretical studies were performed on interfacial problems, especially on stress distribution and concentration of RC beam overlayed by latex-modified concrete. The repaired and strengthened structures would induce a premature failure due to the stress concentration at the adhesive layer of different material before the design expected failure. This paper investigated and proposed an analytical model for predicting interfacial shear and normal stresses of RC beam repair-purpose overlayed by latex-modified concrete. This would be used for predicting interfacial stresses and preventing premature failure at interfaces. This study modified Smith-Teng method for applying to cementitious repairing material, which was based on a direct governing equation and linear-elastic approach for interfacial normal and shear stresses. The proposed theoretical model was verified using commercial FEA program, LUSAS, in terms of interfacial stresses predicted by the proposed model and calculated by LUSAS.
Interfacial properties between rock mass and shotcrete play a significant role in the transmission of loads from the ground to shotcrete. These properties have a major effect on the behaviours of rock mass and shotcrete. They, however, have merely been assumed in most of numerical analyses, and little care has been taken in identifying them. This paper aimed to identify interfacial properties including cohesion, tension, friction angle, shear stiffness, and normal stiffness, through direct shear tests as well as interface normal compression tests for shotcrete/rock cores obtained from a tunnel sidewall. Mechanical properties such as compression strength and elastic modulus were also measured to compare them with the time-dependent variation of interfacial properties. Based on experiments, interfacial properties between rock and shotcrete showed a significant time-dependent variation similar to those of its mechanical properties. In addition, the time-dependent behaviours of interfacial properties can be well regressed through exponential and logarithmic functions of time.
Initiation and propagation of interfacial crack along bimaterial interface are considered in this study. A biaxial loading device for a single specimen is used for obtaining a wide range of mode-mixities. The specimen is an edge-cracked bimaterial strip of glass and epoxy; the biaxial loading device, being capable of controlling displacements in two perpendicular directions, is developed. A series of interfacial crack initiation and Propagation experiments are conducted using the biaxial loading device for various mixed modes. Normal crack opening displacement (NCOD) is measured near crack front by a crack opening interferometry and used for extracting fracture parameters. From mixed mode interfacial crack initiation experiments, large increase in toughness with shear components is observed. The behavior of interfacial crack propagation analyzed as a function of mode-mix shows that initial crack propagation is delayed with increase of mode-mixity, and its velocity is increased with positive mode-mixity but decreased with negative case. However, it is found that crack propagation is less accelerated with positive mode-mixity than the negative mode-mixity, which may be caused by contact and/or effects of friction between far field and near-tip Held along the interfacial crack.
In this paper, single fiber pull-out test is used to measure the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite with temperature. Fiber and matrix of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite are respectively $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy and epoxy resin. To strengthen the interfacial bonding shear stress, various surface treatments are used. They are the hand-sanded surface treatment, the acid etched surface treatment and the silane coupled surface treatment etc.. The interfacial bonding shear strength of surface treated shape memory alloy fiber is greater than that of surface untreated shape memory alloy fiber by from 10% to 16%. It is assured that the hand-sanded surface treatment and the acid etched surface treatment are the best way to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory composite. The best treatment condition of surface is 10% HNO$_3$ solution in the etching method to strengthen the interfacial bonding shear strength of $Ti_{50}-Ni_{50}$ shape memory alloy composite.
Motivated by reducing the uncertainties in quantification of debris bed coolability, this paper reports an experimental study on two-phase flow resistances and interfacial drag in packed porous beds. The experiments are performed on the DEBECO-LT (DEbris BEd COolability-Low Temperature) test facility which is constructed to investigate the adiabatic single and two phase flow in porous beds. The pressure drops are measured when air-water two phase flow passes through the porous beds packed with different size particles, and the effects of interfacial drag are studied especially. The results show that, for two phase flow through the beds packed with small size particles such as 1.5 mm and 2 mm spheres, the contribution of interfacial drag to the pressure drops is weak and ignorable, while the significant effects are conducted on the pressure drops of the beds with bigger size particles like 3 mm and 6 mm spheres, where the interfacial drag in beds with larger particles will result in a descent-ascent tendency in the pressure drop curves along with the fluid velocity, and the effect of interfacial drag should be considered in the debris coolability analysis models for beds with bigger size particles.
