  • A gutter-shaped U grating is a facility that is installed at the sides of a road to provide pedestrians with a rainwater-free road. The previous studies on this facility focused mainly on the progress of the efforts that are being made to improve its performance and interception efficiency so as to prevent damages in regional areas due to the heavy rains caused by climate change. The studies on its maintenance, however, are still inadequate. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze and compare the life cycle costs and performance evaluations of the steel and magic gratings, which are installed in apartments. The results of the study show that the replacement period and rate of gratings differ depending on where they are installed. The initial capital investment cost of a magic grating installed at a road where many vehicles pass is quite high, but in terms of its maintenance and entire-life-cycle costs, its total expenses are lower than those of a steel grating. The results of this study are expected to serve as preliminary data for the selection of an adequate grating that is suitable for particular places in the design phase of construction projects.

  • A rainwater recharge model, which is combined with the quasi-three dimensional unconfined groundwater flow, is proposed in the present paper. The water budget in the catchments of the planned new campus of Kyushu University is evaluated by the present method that calculates both the surface runoff and groundwater flow simultaneously. The results obtained in the present study reveal that the calculated monthly and annual runoff discharges agree reasonably well with the observed discharge. Combining the rainwater recharge model, the two-phase groundwater flow equation is numerically solved f3r the entire area including the low land where the salt water intrusion is observed. The calculated depth of the salt-fresh interface agrees reasonably well with the observed ones at several cross sections. On the other hand, however, it is found that the calculated water budget remains uncertain because of lack of information on the accurate potential evapotranspiration including rainfall interception. In conclusion, however, it is found that the proposed method is applicable for the areas where the horizontal flow is dominant and the interface is assumed to be sharp.

  • This paper covers the detection of covert direct sequence spread spectrum signal without the PN(Pseudo Noise) code information. Due to its low probability of interception, the difficulty of spectrum surveillance increases. Detection parameters are the signal existence of given bandwidth, the length of spreading sequence used by transmitter, and the identification of spreading code for detected chip length. The triple correlation function(TCF) value which is one of the higher order statistical signal processing techniques can be used to detect spread spectrum signal without a prior knowledge, but, it has weakness that TCF results depend on the spread data sequence in actual application. This paper proposes the new scheme that not only overcomes the weakness but also presents better performance than the traditional TCF scheme. The performance comparison of conventional TCF with proposed technique shows that the triple correlation estimator(TCE) has better detection capability.

  • The ballistic missile threat continues to increase with the proliferation of missile technology. In response to this threat, many kinds of interceptors have been emphasized over the years. For development of interceptor, systematic flight tests are essential. Flight tests provide valuable data that can be used to verify performance and confirm the technological progress of ballistic missile defense system including interceptor. However, during flight tests, civilians near the test region could be risk due to a lot of intercept debris. For this reason, reliable estimate of safety area for the flight tests should be preceded. In this study, prediction of safety area is performed through modeling and simulation. Firstly, behaviors of ballistic missile and interceptor are simulated for those entire phase including interception to obtain the relative intercept velocity and the relative impact angle. By using obtained data of kinetic energy, the fragment ejection velocity is calculated and fragment trajectories are simulated by considering drag, gravity and wind effects. Based on the debris field formation and hazard evaluation of debris, final safety area is calculated.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Rainfall-Runoff Model for a long and short term runoff analysis in small forested mountain watersheds. This model was derived from tank model. This model is composed of four tank. Tank I, Tank II, TankIII, and TankIV represent interception loss in forest canopy, direct runoff, base flow, and surface flow component, respectively. This model was tested with two experimental watersheds, located in southern part of Korea. As the result, this model had potentials for simulating and analyzing the long and short term runoff in small forested watersheds.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate a criteria of intercepting capacity and a reduction goal of overflow pollution load in combined sewer system. In the current criteria of intercepting capacity in the domestic sewage facility standard, it is known that three times of peak sewage (Q) in dry period or runoff flow by 2mm/hr is not appropriate since the intercepted flow is estimated by runoff and show different result even in the same watershed. Though a reduction goal of overflow pollution load can be determined from 1) same level of storm-water runoff pollution load in separated storm sewer, 2) less than 5% sewage load in dry weather period, by the domestic sewage facility standard, the simulated results from storm-water model show large differences between two criteria. While it is predicted that sewage pollution load standard three time larger than separated storm sewer standard in high population density and urbanized area, it is shown that separate storm sewer standard larger than sewage pollution load standard in middle population density and developing area. Accordingly, it is proposed that more reasonable intercepting flow and reduction goal of overflows pollution load should be established to minimize discharging pollution load in combined sewer systems. For the purpose, a resonable standard has to be amended by pollution load balance considering the characteristics of a watershed for generation, collection, treatment, and discharging flow.

  • A specific radar system can be implemented more easily using the frequency modulated continuous wave comparing with the pulse Doppler radar. It also has the advantage of LPI (low probability of interception) because of the low power and wide bandwidth characteristics. These radars are usually used to cover the short range area and to obtain the high resolution measurements of the target range and velocity information. The transmitted waveform is used in the mixer to demodulate the received echo signal and the resulting beat signal can be obtained. This beat signal is analyzed using the FFT method for the purpose of clutter removal, detection of a target, extraction of velocity and range information, etc. However, for the case of short signal acquisition time, this FFT method can cause the serious leakage effect which disables the detection of weaker echo signals masked by strong side lobes of the clutter. Therefore, in this paper, the weighting window method is analyzed to suppress the strong side lobes while maintaining the proper main lobe width. Also, the results of FFT beat spectrum analysis are shown under various environments.

Abstract Mobile communication is more vulnerable to security attacks such as interception and unauthorized access than fixed network communication. To overcome these problems, many protocols have been proposed to provide a secure channel between a mobile station and a base station. However, these public-key based protocols have not been fully utilized due to the poor computing power and small battery capacity of mobile stations. In this paper, we propose techniques for accelerating public-key based key establishment protocols between a mobile station and a base station. The proposed techniques enable a mobile station to borrow computing power from a base station without revealing its secret information. The proposed schemes accelerate the previous protocols up to five times and reduce the amount of power consumption of mobile stations.

  • Experimental study for a submerged structure was conducted to protect coastal structures and shorelines. The rectangular submerged structure known as the most efficient shape among various submerged structures in the literature was fabricated at the nose of a rubble mound breakwater. The reflection coefficients and the run-up heights along the slope of a breakwater were measured for different significant wave heights and periods. It is found in this study that the reflection coefficient is affected more relatively by the significant wave period than the significant wave height and the run-up heights are reduced approximately 28% in terms of ${^{RU}}_{2%}$ and 26% in terms of ${^{RU}}_{33%}$, respectively, by the installation of a submerged structure inducing the interception and breaking of waves.

  • Background: To investigate radiological effects on biota, it is necessary to assess radiation dose for flora and fauna living in a terrestrial ecosystem. This paper presents a dynamic model to assess radioactivity concentration and radiation dose of terrestrial flora and fauna after a nuclear accident. Materials and Methods: Litter, organic soil, mineral soil, trees, wild crops, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores are considered the major components of a terrestrial ecosystem. The model considers the physicochemical and biological processes of interception, weathering, decomposition of litter, percolation, root uptake, leaching, radioactive decay, and biological loss of animals. The predictive capability of the model was investigated by comparison of its predictions with field data for biota measured in the Fukushima forest area after the Fukushima nuclear accident. Results and Discussion: The predicted radioactive cesium inventories for trees agreed well with those for evergreens and deciduous trees sampled in the Fukushima area. The predicted temporal radioactivity concentrations for animals were within the range of the measured radioactivity concentrations of deer, wild boars, and black bears. The radiation dose for the animals were, for the whole simulation time, estimated to be much smaller than the lower limit (0.1 mGy·d-1) of the derived consideration reference level given by the International Commission on Radiological Protection for terrestrial flora and fauna. This suggested that the radiation effect of the accident on the biota in the Fukushima forest would be insignificant. Conclusion: The present dynamic model can be used effectively to investigate the radiological risk to terrestrial ecosystems following a nuclear accident.
