  • The randomness and incipient nature of certain faults in reactor systems warrant a robust and dynamic detection mechanism. Existing models and methods for fault diagnosis using different mathematical/statistical inferences lack incipient and novel faults detection capability. To this end, we propose a fault diagnosis method that utilizes the flexibility of data-driven Support Vector Machine (SVM) for component-level fault diagnosis. The technique integrates separately-built, separately-trained, specialized SVM modules capable of component-level fault diagnosis into a coherent intelligent system, with each SVM module monitoring sub-units of the reactor coolant system. To evaluate the model, marginal faults selected from the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) are simulated in the steam generator and pressure boundary of the Chinese CNP300 PWR (Qinshan I NPP) reactor coolant system, using a best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code, RELAP5/SCDAP Mod4.0. Multiclass SVM model is trained with component level parameters that represent the steady state and selected faults in the components. For optimization purposes, we considered and compared the performances of different multiclass models in MATLAB, using different coding matrices, as well as different kernel functions on the representative data derived from the simulation of Qinshan I NPP. An optimum predictive model - the Error Correcting Output Code (ECOC) with TenaryComplete coding matrix - was obtained from experiments, and utilized to diagnose the incipient faults. Some of the important diagnostic results and heuristic model evaluation methods are presented in this paper.

  • Maintenance works of offshore wind turbines could take a longer time, which causes the reduction of their energy production efficiency, than those of onshore wind turbines owing to severe offshore environment. Subsequently, preventive maintenance measures are required to increase the production efficiency. Thus, we proposed a wheel-based Underwater Pole Climbing Robot (UPCR) platform, which was aimed at the periodic inspection and maintenance of the substructures of the offshore wind turbines, with three advantages: high speed, good mobility and low power consumption. In the proposed platform, a self-locking system using a gripper module was adopted for preventing slippery problem and a dual configuration was chosen for moving on a branched structure. As a result, the proposed robot was able to continuously climb, preserve it's position at the pole without consuming energy, and move from the pole to the other branched pole. The results of this research show that the UPCR has basic moving capabilities required for the underwater work for the substructures of the offshore wind turbines.

  • The economic feasibility of a photovoltaic (PV) system is greatly influenced by the initial investment cost for system installation. Also, electricity generation by PV system is highly important. The profits competitiveness of PV system will be maximized through intelligent operation and maintenance (O&M). Here, we developed a microconverter which can maximize electricity generation from PV modules by tracking the maximum power point of PV modules, and help efficient O&M. Also, the microconverter mitigates current mismatch caused by shading, hence maximize power generation. The microconverters were installed PV modules and demonstrated through the field tests. Power outputs such as voltage, string current were measured with variuos weather environments and partial shadings. We found that PV modules with the microconvertors shows 12.05% higher power generation compared to the reference PV modules.

  • This study presents sensor system for autonomous mobile robot capable of floor-to-floor self-navigation. The robot was modified using the Turtlebot3 hardware platform and ROS2 (robot operating system 2). The robot utilized the Navigation2 package to estimate and calibrate the moving path acquiring a map with SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping). For elevator boarding, ultrasonic sensor data and threshold distance are compared to determine whether the elevator door is open. The current floor information of the elevator is determined using image processing results of the ceiling-fixed camera capturing the elevator LCD (liquid crystal display)/LED (light emitting diode). To realize seamless communication at any spot in the building, the LoRa (long-range) communication module was installed on the self-navigating autonomous mobile robot to support the robot in deciding if the elevator door is open, when to get off the elevator, and how to reach at the destination.

  • An intelligent robot should decide its behavior accordingly to the dynamic changes in the environment and user's requirements by evaluating options to choose the best one for the current situation. Many intelligent robot systems that use the Procedural Reasoning System (PRS) accomplishes such task management functions by defining the priority functions in the task model and evaluating the priority functions of the applicable tasks in the current situation. The priority functions, however, are defined locally inside of the plan, which exhibits limitation for the tasks for multi-domain services because global contexts for overall prioritization are hard to be expressed in the local priority functions. Furthermore, since the prioritization functions are not defined as an explicit module, reuse or extension of the them for general context is limited. In order to remove such limitations, we propose a policy-based meta-planning for general task management for multi-domain services, which provides the ability to explicitly define the utility of a task in the meta-planning process and thus the ability to evaluate task priorities for general context combining the modular priority functions. The ontological specification of the model also enhances the scalability of the policy model. In the experiments, adaptive behavior of a robot according to the policy model are confirmed by observing the appropriate tasks are selected in dynamic service environments.

  • Recently, the rising demand for intelligent video surveillance system leads to high-performance face recognition systems. The solution for low-resolution images acquired by a long-distance camera is required to overcome the distance limits of the existing face recognition systems. For that reason, this paper proposes a hardware design of an image resolution enhancement algorithm for real-time intelligent video surveillance systems. The algorithm is synthesizing a high-resolution face image from an input low-resolution image, with the help of a large collection of other high-resolution face images, called training set. When we checked the performance of the algorithm at 32bit RISC micro-processor, the entire operation took about 25 sec, which is inappropriate for real-time target applications. Based on the result, we implemented the hardware module and verified it using Xilinx Virtex-4 and ARM9-based embedded processor(S3C2440A). The designed hardware can complete the whole operation within 33 msec, so it can deal with 30 frames per second. We expect that the proposed hardware could be one of the solutions not only for real-time processing at the embedded environment, but also for an easy integration with existing face recognition system.

  • Intelligent video analysis systems require techniques which can predict accidents and provide alarms to the monitoring personnel. In this paper, we present an abnormal behavior analysis technique based on adaptive background generation. More specifically, abnormal behaviors include fence climbing, abandoned objects, fainting persons, and loitering persons. The proposed video analysis system consists of (i) background generation and (ii) abnormal behavior analysis modules. For robust background generation, the proposed system updates static regions by detecting motion changes at each frame. In addition, noise and shadow removal steps are also were added to improve the accuracy of the object detection. The abnormal behavior analysis module extracts object information, such as centroid, silhouette, size, and trajectory. As the result of the behavior analysis function objects' behavior is configured and analyzed based on the a priori specified scenarios, such as fence climbing, abandoning objects, fainting, and loitering. In the experimental results, the proposed system was able to detect the moving object and analyze the abnormal behavior in complex environments.

  • As long span and complex bridges are constructed often recently, safety estimation became a big issue. Various types of measuring instruments are installed in case of long span bridge. New wireless technologies for long span bridges such as sending information through a gateway at the field or sending it through cables by signal processing the sensing data are applied these days. However, The case of occurred accidents related to bridge in the world have been reported that serious accidents occur due to lack of real-time proactive, intelligent action based on recognition accidents. To solve this problem in this study, the idea of "communication among things", which is the basic method of RFID/USN technology, is applied to the bridge monitoring system. A sensor node module for USN based intelligent bridge system in which sensor are utilized on the bridge and communicates interactively to prevent accidents when it captures the alert signals and urgent events, sends RF wireless signal to the nearest traffic signal to block the traffic and prevent massive accidents, is designed and tested by performing TinyOS based middleware design and sensor test free Space trans-receiving distance.

  • Multi-object tracking has been studied for a long time under computer vision and plays a critical role in applications such as autonomous driving and driving assistance. Multi-object tracking techniques generally consist of a detector that detects objects and a tracker that tracks the detected objects. Various publicly available datasets allow us to train a detector model without much effort. However, there are relatively few publicly available datasets for training a tracker model, and configuring own tracker datasets takes a long time compared to configuring detector datasets. Hence, the detector is often developed separately with a tracker module. However, the separated tracker should be adjusted whenever the former detector model is changed. This study proposes a system that can train a model that performs detection and tracking simultaneously using only the detector training datasets. In particular, a Siam network with augmentation is used to compose the detector and tracker. Experiments are conducted on public datasets to verify that the proposed algorithm can formulate a real-time multi-object tracker comparable to the state-of-the-art tracker models.
