  • To understand natural or social phenomena, we need various information, knowledge, and thought skills. In this context, mathematics and sciences provide us with excellent tools for that purpose. This explains the reasons why there is always significant emphasis on mathematics and sciences in school education; some of the general goals in school education today are to illustrate physical phenomena with mathematical tools based on scientific consideration, to encourage students understand the mathematical concepts implied in the phenomena, and provide them with ability to apply what they learned to the real world problems. For the mentioned goals, we extract six fundamental principles for the integrated mathematics and science education (IMSE) from literature review and suggest a instructional design model. This model forms a fundamental of a case study we performed to which the IMSE was applied and tested to collect insights for design and practice. The case study was done for 10 students (2 female students, 8 male ones) at a coeducational high school in Seoul, the first semester 2009. Educational tools including graphic calculator(Voyage200) and motion detector (CBR) were utilized in the class. The analysis result for the class show that the students have successfully developed various mathematical concepts including the rate of change, the instantaneous rate of change, and derivatives based on the physical concepts like velocity, accelerate, etc. In the class, they described the physical phenomena with mathematical expressions and understood the motion of objects based on the idea of derivatives. From this result, we conclude that the IMSE builds integrated knowledge for the students in a positive way.

  • The researchers who are studying biology and teachers who are teaching biology think that the genetics-related concepts are highly significant than other concepts in biology. With such background, researches on the identification of major concepts have been under way to guide in biology class. Minimal research has been carried out, however, on what concepts should be taught to achieve the specific objectives of the class in relation to the unit of genetics in middle and high school. Accordingly this study was designed to determine the concepts of genetics that should be taught to achieve the objectives of the genetics unit in secondary school. For this purpose 5 instructional objectives of the genetics unit on the 9th grade and 4 instructional objectives of Biology I were selected and the concepts that were taught to achieve class objectives. The survey was conducted among 114 science teachers from middle schools and 85 biology teachers from high schools. The results indicated that 9.1 and 10.2 concepts on average were taught in the 9th grade and in Biology I respectively. Moreover statistical difference in the number of concepts that were taught according to the teachers' teaching experiences appeared among the middle school teachers (p<.05). But such statistical difference did not appear among the high school teachers (p>.05). Furthermore the concepts for the 9th grade consist of the basic genetics concepts although Biology I concepts were integrated and advanced contents for same concepts. Thus this finding suggests that concepts of genetics units to be taught in middle and high school were in linkage.

  • An integrated structural design system can define and process complex design information that occurs in each of the design stages for flexible cooperation. It can also reduce human error on sequential design steps: preliminary design, analysis and detailed design. Therefore, it's very important to have consistent semantic expression and procedure for structural design information that has complex relationships. In this study, we introduce the object-oriented concepts and object-oriented database thechnique that provides high level semantic expression in order to develop an integrated structural design system.

  • This paper aims to make a feasibility study and to propose a master plan for the development of "integrated ocean energy utilization system", which utilizes various renewable ocean energies. Fossils energy, as the most important energy resources which are inevitable for the living and industrial development, becomes exhausted and its consumption creates serious environmental problem. It is important to utilize renewable ocean energy for a sustainable and environmentally friendly development. We survey the integrated utilization of ocean energy based on surveyed energy density distribution and propose concepts of integrated ocean energy utilization plant for both onshore and offshore system. The results of this study can support national effort for renewable energy development utilizing integrated ocean energy and refer as a guideline for the technical development of sustainable integrated ocean energy.

  • Some researchers (Jones et al., 1997; Tarr & Jones, 1997; Tarr & Lannin, 2005) have worked on students' probabilistic thinking framework. These studies contributed to an understanding of students' thinking in probability by depicting levels. However, understanding middle school students' probabilistic thinking is limited to the concepts in conditional probability and independence. In this study, the framework to understand middle school students' thinking in probability is integrated on the works of Jones et al. (1997), Polaki (2005) and Tarr and Jones (1997). As in their works, depicting levels of probabilistic thinking is focused on the concepts and skills for students in middle school. The concepts and skills considered as being necessary for middle school students were integrated from NCTM documents and NAEP frameworks.

  • Information integration of heterogeneous digital parts libraries or electronic pars catalogs is one of issues in B2B procurements. We need to provide an integrated view for multiple information sources. Utilization of ontologies as the metadata descriptions of the information sources can provide an integrated view. However, in order to integrate independently developed ontologies, the mismatches among them should be resolved. In this paper, we propose an ontology of meta-concepts, i.e. meta-ontology. The meta-concepts play the role of vocabulary to describe the parts library ontologies and provide well-established ontological semantics that helps the ontology modelers to consistently identify parts library concepts and systematically structure them. Consequently, the meta-ontology reduces the differences in the way the parts knowledge is interpreted and ensures the mismatches are confined to manageable mis matches, so that a software program can merge automatically. Modeling ontologies of mold and die parts libraries for B2B e-commerce is taken as an example to show how to use the meta-ontology. We also discuss how a parts library mediation system can automatically merge the well-structured parts library ontologies.

  • This study is concentrated on the concept of health promotion through the consideration and the review of articles and books concerning the theory and practice of health promotion. The study results are as follows: Firstly, the early definitions of health promotion are behavior-oriented concepts in general. Secondly, the concepts of health promotion generally regard environmental factors as of great importance. Thirdly, the concepts of health promotion attach great importance to the aspect of policy. Fourthly, health promotion programs usually need the support from the study results of social epidemiology. Fifthly, some distinguished academic fields have been fused into an integrated field under the concept of health promotion. Sixthly, the two key concepts of health promotion are behavior and environment. This study concludes that health promotion can be defined as "the optimal combination of educational, medical and policy resources to maximize the health potential of people most efficiently or effectively through the change of their behavioral and environmental factors at the level of individual, organization or society.

  • To reduce the construction cost and enhance the safety of sodium cooled liquid metal reactors, various kinds of new design concepts were evaluated using the KALIMER operation condition. The required equipment sizes were set for plant electricity output to be similar to that of KALIMER. The evaluations were made focusing on the plant performance and implementation practicality. Each design concept was evaluated for the concept itself and design impacts to interfacing systems. Through the evaluation of the concepts, it was found that the most favorable design concept is the integrated steam generator with forced convection using lead bismuth as the intermediate heat transfer fluid between the primary sodium tube and feed water/steam tube in the steam generator.
