  • The motion of a ship advancing in regular waves is analyzed in the time-domain using the convolution integral of the radiation forces. The memory effect functions and infinite frequency added masses are obtained from the solution of the three dimensional improved Green integral equation in the frequency domain by making use of the Fourier transformation. The ship motions in regular waves have been calculated by both the time and frequency domain methods. It has been shown that they agree very well with each other. The present time-domain method can be used to predict the time histories of unsteady motions in irregular waves. It can also be used to calculate the hydrostatic and Froude-Krylov forces over the instantaneous wetted surface of the ship hull to predict large ship motions, in a practical sense, advancing in large amplitude waves.

  • This paper presents theoretical formulations and numerical computations for predicting first-and second-order hydrodynamic force on a ship advvancing in waves. The theoretical formulation leads to linearized radiation and diffration problems solving the three-dimensional Green function integral equations over the mean wetted body surface. Green function representing a translating and pulsating source potantial for infinite water depth is used. In order to solve integral equations for three dimentional flows using Green function efficiently, the Hoff's method is adopted for numerical calculation of the Green function. Based on the first-order solution, the mean seconder-order forces and moments are obtained by directly integrating second-order pressure over the mean wetted body surface. The calculated items are carried out for analyzing the seakeeping characteristics of Series 60. The calculated items are hydrodynamic coefficients, wave exciting forces, frequency response functions and addd resistance in waves.

  • The paper deals with the interaction between three Griffith cracks propagating under antiplane shear stress at the interface of two dissimilar infinite elastic half-spaces. The Fourier transform technique is used to reduce the elastodynamic problem to the solution of a set of integral equations which has been solved by using the finite Hilbert transform technique and Cooke’s result. The analytical expressions for the stress intensity factors at the crack tips are obtained. Numerical values of the interaction efect have been computed for and results show that interaction effects are either shielding or amplification depending on the location of each crack with respect to other and crack tip spacing. • The finite element alternating method is extended further for general three dimensional cracks in an isotropic body subjected to the mode I loading. The required analytical solution for a dime dimensional crack in an infinite isotropic body is obtained by solving the integral equations. In order to remove the high singularity in integration, the technique suggested by Keat et al. was used. With the proposed method several example problems are solved in order to check the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

  • The first order mation responses of a floating structure and the hydrodynamic forces in regular waves are obtained by means of the linear potential theory. The first order potential is obtained directly from the numerical solution of the improved Green integral equation which is characterized by the combined surface distribution of sources and normal doublets. The mean second order wave drift force is also calculated by means of the near field method. It seems that the present method gives more accurate numerical results than other methods and the agreement between numerical and experimental results appears to be satisfactory.

  • In this paper, we propose a practical cut generation method based on the Chvatal-Gomory procedure for the (0, 1)-Knapsack problem with a variable capacity. For a given set N of n items each of which has a positive integral weight and a facility of positive integral capacity, a feasible solution of the problem is defined as a subset S of N along with the number of facilities that can satisfy the sum of weights of all the items in S. We first derive a class of valid inequalities for the problem using Chvatal-Gomory procedure, then analyze the associated separation problem. Based on the results, we develop an affective cut generation method. We then analyze the theoretical strength of the inequalities which can be generated by the proposed cut generation method. Preliminary computational results are also presented which show the effectiveness of the proposed cut generation method.

  • This paper presents new speed control strategy for periodic load torque injected in AC motor. If motor drive system has a periodic load torque, it causes a periodic motor speed ripple bringing about vibrations and noises. This paper proposed new control method consisting of PIR(proportional-integral-resonant) controller and repetitive controller. PIR controller controls DC, low frequency and fundamental components and repetitive controller controls other harmonics. The performance has been verified through computer simulations using MATLAB Simulink and experiments.

  • Based on the transfer matrix approach and integral transforms, a solution method is developed for the stress analysis of axisymmetrically loaded transversely isotropic elastic media with generalized interlayer and support conditions. Transfer functions (Green's functions in the transformed domain) are obtained in explicit integral form. For several problems of practical interest with different loading and support conditions, solutions are worked out in detail. For the inversion operation, an efficient technique is introduced to remedy the slow convergence of numerical integrals involving oscillating functions. Several illustrative examples are considered and numerical results are presented.

  • The present problem is concerned with the study of deformation of micropolar thermoelastic medium with voids under the influence of various sources acting on the plane surface. The analytic expressions of displacement components, force stress, couple stress, change in volume fraction field and temperature distribution are obtained in the transformed domain for Lord-Shulman (L-S) theory of thermoelasticity after applying the integral transforms. A numerical inversion technique has been applied to obtain the solution in the physical domain. The numerical results are presented graphically. Some useful particular cases have also been deduced.
