The present study investigated the forms and behaviors of fuel during intake and compression process, and the initial flame stability in a lean burn engine modified as a single cylinder engine equipped with quartz windows for visualization. PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) method with KrF Excimer laser was used for measuring the fuel distributions. The principal design concept of the lean burn nin in this study is the axial stratification in the fuel distribution via fuel injection during intake process and different shapes of intake ports; helical and straight. The experiments showed that fuel flowed in as a vapor state in the early part of intake process and lots of this mixture mated down along the intake valve side cylinder wall, but in the latter part, a lot of fuel flowed in as a liquid state and this fuel stayed in the upper part of cylinder, after that the dense fuel cloud moved upward in the early of part compression process. It became clear that the fuel flowed in via straight port had a important role in the axial fuel stratification.
Development of a dynamic engine model is essential to predict and analyze of dynamic characteristics from a natural gas engine. Reducing the harmful exhaust emissions can be accomplished by a precise air-fuel ratio control. In this paper, the dynamic engine model was proposed and included mixture formation and intake process because the dynamic characteristics can be affected by the mixture components such as an air and a gaseous fuel. The air mass flow, the partial pressure ratio, and the gas constant are changed by variations of the components in the mixture formation and intake process. The dynamic engine model is applied to the natural gas engine for validation test. Experimental results show that the dynamic engine model is effective to predict the dynamic characteristics of the natural gas engine.
The combustion process is the most important process in the S.I. engine since it determines performance and emissions. As the flame propagates slowly due to EGR or lean mixture, the fast burn system is widely used in the modern engines in order to improve engine performance. As the basic research for the fast burn system of the S.I engine, this study is aimed to identify the effects of the intake port design on the air motion inside a cylinder. In this study various intake ports were designed and tested. Swirl levels for the different intake ports were measured by a swirl meter and LDv.Also transient air motion inside a cylinder is further investigated following the motion of the boston. Out of the various intake ports tested in this study the masked shroud head (MSH) generates the highest swirl while keeping satisfactory volumetric efficiency. The MSH port also produces high level of turbulence by shearing action between cylinder wall and swirl.
The flow field in a cylinder of a 4-valve pentroof engine is studied using the KIVA-3V code. Turbulence is generated from the jet flow through valves and broken down to the small scale eddies in the compression process. It is known that the tumble effectively keeps turbulence during the compression process. In the combustion process, turbulence is known to enhance flame speed by increasing mass, momentum and heat transfer rates. The effects of the intake port angles on the flow and combustion characteristics are studied in this study. To study the effect of turbulence on the combustion process, Cantore combustion model is applied in this study.
Unsteady state free natural gas jets injected from several types of injectors were numerically simulated. Simulations showed good agreements with the schlieren experimental results. Moreover, injections of natural gas in intake manifolds of a single-valve engine and a double-valve engine were predicted as well. Predictions revealed that large volumetric injections of natural gas in intake manifolds led to strong impingement of natural gas with the intake valves, which as a result, gave rise to pronounced backward reflection of natural gas towards the inlets of intake manifolds, together with significant increase in pressure in intake manifold. Based on our simulations, we speculated that for engines with short intake manifolds, reflections of the mixture of natural gas and air were likely to approach the inlets of intake manifolds and subsequently be inbreathed into other cylinders, resulting in non-uniform mixture distributions between the cylinders. For engines with long intake manifolds, inasmuch as the degrees of intake interferences between the cylinders were not identical in light of the ignition sequences, non-uniform intake charge distributions between the cylinders would occur.
In this paper, an index for the evaluation of a vehicle intake booming noise and intake sound quality were developed through a correlation analysis and a multiple factor regression analysis of objective measurement and subjective evaluation data. At first, an intake orifice noise was measured at the wide-open throttle test condition. And then, an acoustic transfer function between intake orifice noise and interior noise at the steady state condition was estimated. Simultaneously, subjective evaluation was carried out with a 10-scale score by 8 intake noise and vibration expert evaluators. Next, the correlation analysis between the psychoacoustic parameters derived from the measured data and the subjective evaluation was performed. The most critical factor was determined and the corresponding index for intake booming noise and sound quality are obtained from the multiple factor regression method. And, the optimal design of intake system was studied using the booming noise and the sound quality evaluation index for expectation performance of intake system. Conclusively, the optimal designing parameters of intake system from noise level and sound quality whose point of view were extracted by adapting comparative weighting between the booming noise and sound quality evaluation index, which optimized the process. These work could be represented guideline to system engineers, designers and test engineers about optimization procedure of system performance by considering both of noise level and sound quality.
The intake noise, a major source of vehicle noises, has rapidly become a noticeable, and has been studied to reduce the level. Traditionally, the intake system has been developed through a experiment, namely, the trial and error process. This approach requires very high cost and long time consuming to develop the systm. Recently, FEM and BEM are becoming useful in analysis of the intake system, and the results of analysis are very valid. But because this techniques also require high cost and long analysis time, this technique is generally not practical tool at the early stage of the development. In this study, the software was developed to predict and analyze the acoustic characteristics of the intake system. It was based on the Transfer Matrix Method and operated to analyze a simplified intake system in a personal computer. It can be used early in the design stage of development of the intake system. This study presented a improvement to reduce the level of the intake noise, which modified the specification of the intake system. And the improvement were verified by NIT/SYSNOISE, FE analysis commercial software, and testing a prototype.

In this paper, an intake RCV system for low noise turbo engine was developed through optimization process of a geometric path of compressor housing and an open rate of recirculation valve. At first, the critical customer requirement from voice of customer was defined and quality function deployment of an intake RCV system was executed. And then, the renovative concept design using pugh matrix method was selected as final concept for satisfaction of requirement. Simultaneously, system analysis was carried by function diagram and fishbone diagram. Next, control factors and levels for the optimal design were performed. And, the optimal design of an intake RCV system was studied using design of experiment. Conclusively, we achieved not only cancellation tip-out noise at the driving condition but also improvement of NVH commodity through optimization process of an intake RCV system, which is optimal configuration of compressor housing and recirculation valve.
In this paper, tile characteristics of flow resulting from the configurations of piston head and intake-port of the cylinder in a gasoline-direct-injection engine are investigated numerically. Calculations are carried out from intake process to the end of compression. GTT code which includes the third order upwind Chakravarthy-Osher TVD scheme and κ-ε turbulence model with the law of wall as a boundary condition. As a result, a piston head with a smaller radius of curvature and larger radius gives stronger reverse tumble. It is also shown that as the maximum tumble ratio increases by the configuration of the intake-port the tumble ratio at the end of compression stroke increases. It is concluded that flows at the end of compression stroke can be controlled by the optimum design of intake-port and piston head.
