In a port fuel injection system of engine, a large part of fuel injected into an intake port adheres on its wall and inlet valve. Consequently, the wall impinging spray interaction might occur the generation of several harmful phenomena. There are uncontrollable mixture formation, an accidental backfire and unburned hydrocarbons. Therefore, it is important to analyze the fuel behavior during the spray-wall interaction. In this study, splash characteristics of impingement and reflecting or scattering behavior of droplets of fuel injected from EFI nozzle were studied experimentally. A test fuel used is LAWS and its physical characteristics are similar to the conventional gasoline except for the ignition point. Since the liquid film formed immediately after impinging on an impingement plate is unstable, it is easy to cause secondary disintegration. In addition, when the intermittently impingement on the impingement plate with LAWS, the splash ratio is around 0.6. If an injection period becomes longer, liquid film will become thick and the splash ratio will fall bout 10 percent. On the other hand, when the injection period of an intermittent spray is long, the same time lapse as a continuous spray is shown.
This study was experimentally analyzed to improve the performance and to reduce exhaust emissions in a turbochaged D.I. diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L. In generally, the system of intake port, fuel injection and turbocharger are very important factors which have influence on the engine performance and exhaust emission because the properties in the injected fuel depend on the combustion characteristics. The optimum results which is tested as available factors fur better performance and emission are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.43, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is $5^{\circ}$ re-entrant type, nozzle hole diameter is ${\phi}0.28*6$, injection timing is BTDC $13^{\circ}CA$ and turbocharger is GT40 model which are selected compressor A/R 0.58 and turbine A/R 1.19.

The interaction between airflow and liquid phase LfG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) sprays was investigated in a steady flow system embodied in a wind tunnel to simulate the variety of flow inside intake port of LPG engines with liquid injection system. The spray developments in flowing fields with the mean velocities of 5.4, 21.5 and 42.4m/s were identified by spray visualization techniques such as Mie scattering and shadowgraph. The microscopic visualization using a telescopic lens system was performed to investigate the shape and size of liquid droplets in the spray. PDA measurement was used to get 1-dimensional velocity and diameter of liquid droplets. The fast co-flows make the spray field be compact and be lead upward to the injection direction. SMD of the spray was smaller at the fast flowing field. Spray width got bigger and SMD of the spray was smaller with higher injection pressure.

Recently GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine is spotlighted to achieve higher thermal efficiency under partial loads and better performance at full loads. To realize this system, it is essential to make both stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion. When compared to PFI(Port Fuel Injection) engine, GDI engine needs more complicated control and optimal design with injection system. In addition, spray pattern must be optimized according to injection timing because ambient pressure in combustion chamber is also varied. Thus spray structure should be analyzed in details to meet various conditions. In this experimental study, two types of visualization system were developed to simulate compression stroke and intake stroke, respectively. With an increase of the ambient pressure, the penetration length tends to decrease due to rising resistance caused by the drag force of the ambient air. Spray characteristics impinged on the piston has a significant effect on mixture stratification around the spark plug. These results provide the information on macroscopic spray structure and design factors far developing GDI injector.

In-cylinder spray flow motion plays an important in the adjustment of mixture preparation with a fundamental spray characteristics and in-cylinder flow field well in direct-injection gasoline engine. In this study, the fundamental spray characteristics such as mean drop size, velocity distribution, spray angle were measured and in-cylinder spray flow motion was visualized in order to optimize intake port, piston top land and combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass-produced G야 engine. For these experiments, the PDPA measurements and Mie scattering technique were used for detailed spray characteristics and in-cylinder spray motions were obtained by use of ICCD camera through the single-cylinder optical engine. From the experimental results, the test injector shows a good low-end linearity between the dynamic flow and fuel injection pulse width and the fuel spray of 20mm or less in SMD with good spray symmetry. In addition, the in-cylinder tumble flow has more effect on the homogeneous mixture formation than that of in-cylinder swirl flow at early injection mode and the in-cylinder swirl flow plays a better role of stratified mixture preparation than tumble flow at late injection mode.

For the purpose of obtaining a fundamental data which is needed to develope the port injection type charged LPLi engine system, we manufactured intake port injection system of liquid charging LPG and modified heavy duty single cylinder LPLi engine from heavy duty diesel engine. Engine output and emission characteristics were analyzed under variable air/fuel ratio and charging pressure. Since LPG is consisted of propane and butane, we investigated combustion characteristics using this two kinds of fuel. From the result of charging engine performance test, engine torque increase about 30% ∼ 40% with 0.3bar charging pressure. In low speed condition, as charging pressure increase, combustion stability improve ill lean bum condition, but, in high speed condition, combustion stability make worse in lean bum condition. We know that engine output decreased rapidly from the condition of air excess ratio 1.3. In addition, we measured emission characteristics under the lean bum and charging condition. From this experiment, we found that CO emission is out of the question in the range from stiochiometric to lean burn and charging condition, but charging pressure has influence on HC emission.
The influence of fuel spray characteristics on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns to Improve fuel economy and to reduce exhaust emissions. In general, the UBHC(Unburned Hydrocarbon) emission could be reduced by decreasing the droplet size of the fuel sprays. In PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engines, the mixture of air and fuel would not be uniform under a certain condition, because the breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve sheat. In this study, were investigated the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2holes-2sprays and 4holes-2sprays type injectors used in PFI gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration were measured by LDPA (Laser Diffraction Particle size Analyzer). The variation of droplet mean diameter and optical concentration were measured for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray.

The knock characteristics in an engine were investigated under homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) operation. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)and gasoline were used as fuels and injected at the intake port using port fuel injection equipment. Di-methyl ether (DME) was used as an ignition promoter and was injected directly into the cylinder near compression top dead center (TDC). A commercial variable valve timing device was used to control the volumetric efficiency and the amount of internal residual gas. Different intake valve timingsand fuel injection amounts were tested to verify the knock characteristics of the HCCI engine. The ringing intensity (RI) was used to define the intensity of knock according to the operating conditions. The RI of the LPG HCCI engine was lower than that of the gasoline HCCI engine at every experimental condition. The indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) dropped when the RI was over 0.5 MW/m2and the maximum combustion pressure was over 6.5MPa. There was no significant relationship between RI and fuel type. The RI can be predicted by the crank angle degree (CAD) at 50 CA. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were minimized at high RI conditions. The shortest burn duration under low RI was effective in achieving low HC and CO emissions.
This study investigates spray characteristics before and after wall impingingment of gasoline spray in suction air flow. For this study, a rectangular model intake port was made of acrylic glass, and suction air was generated by using the forced air blower contrariwise. The injector for this study was a pintle-type port gasoline injector in which an air-assist adaptor is installed to supply assisted air. A PDPA system was employed to simultaneously measure the size and velocity of droplets near the wall. Measured droplets are divided into "pre-impinging droplets"with positive normal velocity and "post-impinging droplets"were negative normal velocity for the suction flow. The velocities, size distributions and Sauter mean diameter(SMD) of pre-and post-impinging droplets for varions injection angles and air-assists are comparatively analyzed.

This paper investigates the steady-state combustion characteristics of the Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out its benefits in exhaust gas emissions. HCCI combustion is an attractive way to lower carbon dioxide($CO_2$), nitrogen oxides(NOx) emission and to allow higher fuel conversion efficiency. However, HCCI engine has inherent problem of narrow operating range at high load due to high in-cylinder peak pressure and consequent noise. To overcome this problem, the control of combustion start and heat release rate is required. It is difficult to control the start of combustion because HCCI combustion phase is closely linked to chemical reaction during a compression stroke. The combination of VVT and DME direct injection was chosen as the most promising strategy to control the HCCI combustion phase in this study. Regular gasoline was injected at intake port as main fuel, while small amount of DME was also injected directly into the cylinder as an ignition promoter for the control of ignition timing. Different intake valve timings were tested for combustion phase control. Regular gasoline was tested for HCCI operation and emission characteristics with various engine conditions. With HCCI operation, ignition delay and rapid burning angle were successfully controlled by the amount of internal EGR that was determined with VVT. For best IMEP and low HC emission, DME should be injected during early compression stroke. IMEP was mainly affected by the DME injection timing, and quantities of fuel DME and gasoline. HC emission was mainly affected by both the amount of gasoline and the DME injection timing. NOx emission was lower than conventional SI engine at gasoline lean region. However, NOx emission was similar to that in the conventional SI engine at gasoline rich region. CO emission was affected by the amount of gasoline and DME.
