  • This paper describes briefly the simulation program for predicting the performance of a high speed turbocharged four cycle diesel engine. The wave phenomena in the intake and exhaust systems are calculated by the characteristic method. The combustion process in the power cycle is represented by the heat release pattern which is given by the Wiebe's function or the pattern based on measured values. Turbocharger matching for the engine is described by utilizing the characteristic maps of both the compressor and turbine, which are obtained from quasi-steady states. A comparison of experimental and calculated results shows a good agreement. Then the influences of the intake system, the period of valve overlap and the characteristics of the turbine are numerically investigated by the simulation.

  • Exhaust heat recovery ventilation systems conserve energy through enthalpy recovery between air intake and exhaust, and they are being increasingly used. An exhaust heat recovery ventilation system can be installed in the ceiling of a balcony or emergency evacuation space. However, in the case of fire, the emergency evacuation space has to by law remain as empty space, and therefore, a ventilation system can't be installed in an emergency evacuation space. Therefore, the need for a proper installation space for a ventilation system is emphasized. In this study, to install a heat recovery ventilation system in a lightweight wall, a heat exchanger was assembled of thickness below 140 mm. The efficiency of heat recovery was analyzed through performance experiment, in the case of the cooling and heating mode. The heat recovery efficiency increases when the surface area is increased, by using closer channel spacing in the heat exchanger, or by increasing the size of the heat exchanger.

  • For the satisfaction of the high engine performance and the low radiated sound pressure simultaneously, the duct length in the vehicle intake/exhaust system should be tuned carefully in the design and development stage of a vehicle. This study was concerned about the effects of intake duct length in clean and dirty sides on the radiated sound emitted from an inlet. An index derived from the existing prediction model of radiated sound pressure was employed to determine which duct was more influential to the radiated sound. Comparing the experimental and predicted results, we found that the change of dirty-side duct length caused a larger change than that in the clean side in the radiated sound level from a tested intake system.

  • This paper presents the static characteristics of EGR-WI combined system. The water injection system was statically characterized by recording the engine exhaust outlet $NO_x$ emissions for comparison with baseline $NO_x$ emissions. Effects of the water injection system on CO and HC emissions and fuel consumption were examined. The research engine used for these experiments was a 103 kW turbocharged, intercooled, 2.5 L VM Motori CIDI engine equipped with a cooled EGR system. Water injection in the intake system demonstrated the potential for significant reductions in engine outlet $NO_x$ emissions. The system has reduced engine outlet $NO_x$ emissions by 40-50%, but caused significant increases in CO and HC emissions, particularly at low loads. Fuel consumption effects were minimal.

  • Recently, the regulations from the government and the concerns of people be raised to the interest in exhaust and intake noise of passenger car as much as other vehicles. In these demands, performance prediction software was developed in this paper. In this study, Robust design was used for improving the noise reduction capacity of intake system with the performance prediction software. On the basis of the existing design, length and radius of each component that was thought to be effective to the performance of intake system was selected. At first, factors are arranged by using Ll8 table of orthogonal array and then optimum value can be obtained by modified Ll6 table of orthogonal array.

  • Incomplete combustion in automotive engines is a major cause of harmful exhaust gases. In this study, to prevent incomplete combustion and reduce exhaust gas emissions, a gasket blade for increasing the air velocity was applied to the intake manifold, and the change in exhaust gas was investigated theoretically and experimentally. First, simulation analysis for flow according to the number and angle of the gasket blade was performed using a 3D flow analysis program. As an analysis result, the internal average velocity of the gasket blade was optimum at 6-blade with an angle of $30^{\circ}$. Based on the simulation results, experiments were conducted to verify the effects of the gasket blades on the exhaust gas in a non-load engine simulation system. As the engine speed was increased from 2000 to 4000 rpm, exhaust gases of HC, CO, and NOx decreased by 23.4%, 16.5%, and 3.8%, respectively, and the emission decreasing effect was reduced.

  • The effects of cooled-ECR on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions were investigated in a single cylinder HCCI diesel engine The premixed charge (gasoline or diesel) was obtained with premixing chamber and high-pressure (5.5MPa) injection system. Exhaust pressure control and cooled ECR system were used in order to reduce pressure fluctuation and to mix the exhaust gas well with the fresh intake air. The experimental results show that NOx emissions from conventional diesel engine are steeply decreased by HCCI diesel combustion with cooled-EGR in both case of gasoline and diesel premixing. But soot emissions are rapidly increased with the increase of ECR rate. The recycled exhaust gas increased the ignition delay of mixture and decreased maximum combustion pressure. HC and CO emissions of HCCI combustion are increased with ECR rate.

  • The present study describes the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in compression ignition engines using diesel-gasoline dual fuel. For investigating combustion characteristics, diesel fuel was injected directly in a single-cylinder compression ignition engine with a common-rail injection system and gasoline fuel was injected into a premixed chamber installed in an intake port. In order to investigate exhaust emission characteristics, exhaust gas was measured by emission analyzer and smoke meter. The experimental results showed that cases of diesel-gasoline dual fuel combustion exhibited extended ignition delay and reduced peak combustion pressure compared to those of directly injected diesel fuel cases. Furthermore, premixed gasoline-air mixture reduced NOx emissions due to low peak of rate of heat release(ROHR).

  • A premixed charge compression ignition engine is experimentally investigated for the reduction of NOx and smoke emissions from diesel engines. In this study, the premixed fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber and then this pre-mixture is ignited by small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the premixed charge compression ignition engine, NOx and smoke concentrations of the exhaust emissions were reduced simultaneously as compared with the conventional diesel engine. But HC emission was increased with the increase of premixed ratio. Also, when EGR system was applied to the PCCI diesel engine, the effect of EGR rate on the combustion characteristics and the exhaust gas emissions was discussed.

  • This study is investigated into the dynamic effect of the manifold configuration during the gas exchange processes using both simulation and experiment, In theoretical study on the flow analysis, the characteristic method is applied to solve the compressible unsteady flow equation, involving the several steady flow boundary conditions. In order to excute the engine experiment efficiently, a data acquisition system is configured by using A/D converter and PC. Good results which coincided experimental data with simulation output were obtained, and it shows that this simulation method can be applied to obtain the optimal design parameters in the intake and exhaust systems.
