The formation and oxidation processes of soot particles in a diesel flame were investigated with a rapid compression machine. A cloud of soot particles was successfully visualized by means of the instantaneous laser shadow photographs technique and the equivalence ratio of the soot formation zone was estimated from a measured fuel concentration distribution in a nonevaporating spray. The temporal and spatial variation of soot concentration in the flame was also correlated with the rate of heat release. Soot particles appears first in a region near the flame tip when diffusion combustion period starts, and its concentration is a maximum at about the end of injection, then decreases due to oxidation. The reason for soot being formed in a fuel lean region near the flame tip is the evaporated fuel requires time to be pyrolized as it travels through the burning fuel rich zone towards the flame tip.
This paper presents a novel three-phase power module bridge type auxiliary resonant AC link snubber for the three-phase voltage-fed sinwave soft switching PWM inverter operating under specific instantaneous space voltage vector modulation. The operating principle of this resonant snubber is described for current source load model during one switching period, along with its design approach based on the simulation data. The performance evaluations of space vector modulation three-phase sinewave soft switching inverter with a new three-phase active auxiliary resonant AC link snubber are discussed as compared with those of three-phase voltage source-fed sinewave hard switching PWM inverter with a standard space voltage vector modulation strategy. The power loss analysis and conventional efficiency estimation of three-phase soft switching PWM inverter using ICBT modules are carried out including all the conduction power losses based upon the measured v-i characteristics of IGBT and its antiparallel diode as well as their switching losses.
The effects of root gap on welding residual stress and deformation are dealt with the multi-pass weldment with three kinds(0, 6, 30mm) of root gap by F.E.M common code, and then compared with experiment data. In this analysis, an 100% ramp heat input model was used to avoid numerical convergence problem due to an instantaneous increase in temperature near the fusion zone, and the effect of a moving arc in a two dimensional plane was also included. During the analysis, a small time increment was applied in a period with instantaneous temperature fluctuation while a large time increment was used in the rest period. The residual stress is distributed as symmetric types and maximum value is also equivalent when the weldment with 0mm and 6mm root gap is welded. In the case of 30mm root gap welding, the distribution of the residual stress extends over a wide range as asymmetric types due to the built-up weld, and most of the residual stress is biased in the side of a built-up weld part. In case of 0mm gap welding and 6mm gap welding, a little angular distortion occurs, but the level of deformation is small. When the weldment with 30mm root gap is welded, the angular deformation of the asymmetric types, however, occurs larger than the other specimens. The experimental and the analytic results show good coincidence and indicate that the welding residual stress and deformation distribution of 30 mm root gap specimen may be asymmetric and the amplitude is larger than those of root gap specimen under standard.

In the scattering of a monochromatic plane wave from a dielectric column oscillating sinusoidally prependicular to its axis, one could assume that the boundary moves with a uniform velocity equal to its instantaneous oscilaating velocity. The scattered fields are abtained according to the postulates of special relativitiy and extended for the osdillating period. The angle distribution of average scattering radiation, the average of total scattering cross sections and radar cross sections for a period are illustrated as the function of the relative maximum oscillating velocity and the incident angles of plane waves.
Time-dependent period and energy of free vibration of a string, whose length varies with time at a constant rate, are investigated by a traveling wave method. When the string length is increased, the vibration period increase, but the free vibration energy decrease with time. However, when the string undergoes retraction, the vibration energy increases with time. String tension together with non-zero instantaneous velocity at the moving boundary results in energy variation. Analytical solutions by the traveling wave method are compared with previous results using the perturbation method and Kotera's approach.

A Multistage production-inventory model is developed for deteriorating items. The model is developed deterministic but time-varing demand pattern and instantaneous delivery. Deterioration rates are assumed to vary from period to period. Discrete version of Pontryagin's maximum principle is used to present the efficient alogrithm to solve this model easily. A numerical example is given to illustrate the derived results.

This study proposes a suppression of zero sequence current (ZSC), which is caused by zero sequence voltage (ZSV) for a dual two-level inverter with single DC bus. Large output voltages enable the dual inverter with single DC bus to improve a system efficiency compared with single inverter. However, the structure of dual inverter with single DC bus inevitably generates ZSC, which reduces the system efficiency and causes a current ripple. ZSV is also produced by dead time, and its magnitude is determined by the DC bus and current direction. This study presents a novel space vector modulation method that allows the instantaneous suppression of ZSC. Based on a condition where a switching period is twice a sampling (control) period, the proposed control method is implemented by injecting the offset voltage at the primary inverter. This offset voltage is injected in half of the switching period to suppress the ZSC. Simulation and experiments are used to compare the proposed and conventional methods to determine the ZSC suppression performance.
This experimental study investigated the flow characteristics for regular waves passing a rectangular floating structure in a two-dimensional wave tank. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to obtain the velocity field in the vicinity of the structure. The phase average was used to extract the mean flow and turbulence property from repeated instantaneous PIV velocity profiles. The mean velocity field represented the vortex generation and evolution on both sides of the structure. The turbulence properties, including the turbulence length scale and the turbulent kinetic energy budget were investigated to characterize the flow interaction between the regular wave and the structure. The results shaw the vortex generated near the structure corners, which are known as the eddy-making damping or viscous damping. However, the vortex induced by the wave is longer than the roll natural period of the structure, which presents the phenomena opposing the roll damping effect; that is, the vortex may increase the roll motion under the wave condition longer than the roll natural period.

Underwater explosion properties for TNT, an ideal explosive, and DXD-04, a nonideal explosive, were numerically modeled with a one-dimensional Lagrangian hydrodynamic code. The equation of state parameters for detonation products for TNT and DXD-04 were obtained from the BKW code, assuming complete reaction. Burn of TNT was modeled by using the Chapman-Jouguet(CJ) volume burn technique, a programmed-burn technique, assuming instantaneous detonation reaction. Burn of DXD-04 was modeled by using the same technique and by using the reaction rate calibrated from two-dimensional steady-state detonation experiments. The calculations for TNT reproduced the experimental peak pressure of the shock wave propagating through water with an error of $3.0\%$ and the experimental oscillation period of the bubble formed of detonation products with an error of $2.3\%$. For DXD-04, the CJ volume burn technique could not reproduce the experimental observations. When the reaction rate calibrated from two-dimensional steady-state detonation experimental data, the calculated peak pressure was slightly higher by $7.3\%$ than the experimental data, but the calculated shock profile was in good agreement. The bubble period was reproduced with an error of $1.8\%$. These results demonstrated that underwater explosion properties for an ideal explosive can be predicted by using a programmed burn technique, and that, however, those for a nonideal explosive can be predicted only when a well-calibrated reaction rate is used.

Surge motion of top-end platform induced by periodic wave makes marine flexible riser encounter equivalent sheared-oscillatory flow, under which the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) response will be more complicated than pure sheared flow or oscillatory flow cases. Based on a time domain force-decomposition model, the VIV response characteristics under sheared-oscillatory flows are investigated numerically in this paper. Firstly, the adopted numerical model is validated well against laboratory experiments under sheared flow and oscillatory flow. Then, 20 sheared-oscillatory flow cases with different oscillation periods and top maximum current velocities are designed and simulated. Under long and short oscillation period cases, the structural response presents several similar features owing to the instantaneous sheared flow profile at each moment, but it also has some different patterns because of the differently varying flow field. Finally, the effects and essential mechanism of oscillation period and top maximum current velocity on VIV response are discussed systematically.
